Anyway to delete now instead of waiting 1 year? The company names are exactly the same and we often waste time opening the wrong account.
I can see your challenge in choosing the right account, Tim.
Expired QBO companies are actually separated from the active ones. This would let you easily distinguish which one is right.
About your question, we're unable to remove your expired account from your list of companies. The system will eventualy remove it after 90 days. The one-year removal that Alex mentioned in the previous reply will only apply to paid accounts.
I hope this clears up everything. If you have more questions, please let us know.
Unfortunately, they are not separated. Both are listed under active quickbooks companies as the same exact name, even though the trial account is expired.
But this method only "Hides" the company, it does not delete it.
All the company files are still located at: C:\Users\Public\Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks\Company Files
Hello aquaclear,
I just noticed that we got QBO and QBDT concerns in this thread. For the Desktop version, you can rename the company file and delete its files from the address folder you mentioned. Then, hide the file name from the No Company Open page if it's still there.
Let me know if you have other questions about deleting a company file.
By the way, check out our Blogs to see the latest updates about our QuickBooks products.
this is not an option in my QB Online version Version 4.1.4-71 (4.1.4-71.71) . I have two companies I have been paying for and want them off my accountant. How can I delete them from my account. [email address removed].
Thanks for joining in this thread, @brennanhomeimpro. The option provided by my peer @JessT above applies for the QuickBooks Desktop version.
Removing the company from the list isn't available in the QB Online desktop app. However, the system will automatically delete all inactive or canceled accounts after a year.

I can not find a file tab on QB online looks like your example is from desktop
Do you have any specific issue? 1 QBO account is for 1 company file.
Yes, you're right, @rtrowbri303. You're unable to find the File tab in QuickBooks Online (QBO). It's an option for the desktop version of QuickBooks. Let me provide further details about this.
There are two scenarios that I can think of based on your concern above. It's either you want to remove an expired or cancelled company file or cancel your QBO account. I'll discuss each one for you.
When a trial company expires or a paid subscription is cancelled, removing it on your list of accounts isn't an option. This is because the system will automatically delete it on or after the scheduled date. This is implemented so you can still have read-only access to your data for future reference.
Your expired or cancelled account is separated under the Cancelled Companies list. This way, you'll easily identify them from the active ones.
In case you want to cancel your QBO account, just go to the company's Account and settings page to complete the process. Before doing so, I'd recommend printing and saving all the necessary files for your future reference. For the detailed steps, here's how:
There'll be an email sent to the account's master administrator verifying the cancellation.
To learn more about the life of your QBO company data after cancelling, kindly refer to this article: What happens to my QuickBooks Online data after I cancel?. It contains information about the availability of your account information and export policies after the said process.
Please let me know if you have other concerns. I'm just around to help. Take care always.
Does this technique work for the online version? I have been trying to delete a company from the online version.
It's my pleasure to address your concern for today, AccountingTeacher2019.
In QuickBooks Online (QBO), one company file is equivalent to one subscription. Thus, deleting one company is canceling one subscription.
Yes, you can follow Rea_M's instructions on how to cancel an account in QBO.

Hello @dcalvin77,
Before we can accomplish your goal for today, can you tell me more about your post upon joining in this thread? Are you having trouble following the suggestion or is it other than deleting a company?
Keep me updated in the comments. Hope to hear from you soon. Take care and stay safe!
I am using the educational version of QuickBooks online. I initially set up a company using my personal email address and later found out that there were educational resources for professors teaching QB2019 online. I set up an educational demo company (Beach Barkers) using QB2019 online. I sent my students an invite to the demo company because this allows me to monitor their progress. Although they all responded, I could only see two of the responses. I then tried having them send me an accountant invite. I can only accept the invite through the first company set up with my personal email. I want to know if it is possible to delete this first company (and associated email) and go back and accept the accountant invite through the educational demo company that I set up?
Thanks for getting back here, @AccountingTeacher2019.
To delete a QuickBooks Online (QBO) company, you'll need to cancel it. Once done, you'll have read-only access for a year so you can still view your transactions. After the said period, the system will automatically delete that account. Here's how:

Will my access to the QB2019 online educational version (and company) stay intact if I take the steps that you’ve suggested?
Thanks for coming back here, AccountingTeacher2019.
To clarify, do you use the same login for both accounts? If you see two companies after you sign in, then canceling your other subscription will not affect your access to the educational version. This is because both accounts are separately created.
For canceling your current subscription, you can follow the steps provided by my colleague DivinaMercy_N. To learn more about the education program, you can visit this link: Intuit Education questions.
Please let me know if you have any follow-up questions or other concerns. We're always around to help. Have a good day ahead!
It worked great. I had to delete the original email account and now I can see my students' work. Thank you.
I think these responses are AI generated. I have the same question and I see nothing on here that helps.
Thanks ShallyMarR,
your tip on Deleting a company is helpful.
I have had the same problem with QB when asking questions (about various problems) It definitely seems they answer things that have nothing to do with what you are asking! It also doesn't help that there are different answers all dependent on whether you have QB Desktop, Online, etc which seems ridiculous to me. Why make it SO complicated to edit YOUR OWN data! That is very counterintuitive and the opposite of what this program was created for. It is beyond complicated to void/delete something without causing chaos in 10 other accounts or areas. There has got to be a better alternative out there other than having to hire an accountant.
I know how it feels when something isn't working the way we wanted it to be working, jmphoenix2000.
I appreciate your idea of having an option to edit your data or delete/void a company you no longer use.
You can send your ideas to our product development team to help improve your QuickBooks experience. With your suggestions, they can see what they need to improve and what new features you would like them to add in future product enhancement.
