Let me share this article for more details: Categorize and match online bank transactions in QuickBooks Online
For non banking transactions, follow the steps in this article on how to use multiple accounts in a single transaction: Enter a split transaction into the register.

I know it’s there, but it no longer works. If I select split and enter the amounts the “split amount” does not update at the bottom right and instead shows a difference equal to the total expense. The “apply and accept” button is then grayed out and cannot be pressed to submit entries. So I’m not able to do anything and am stuck.

Hello, Andy.
Thanks for getting back here with the clarifications and more details. I have a couple of solutions to help you fix the grayed out Apply and accept button.
In the split transaction window, you'll want to zero out the difference. QuickBooks won't highlight the Apply and accept button if it's more than, less than or equal to the original amount.
If everything was done correctly, then this is likely a case of a browser cache issue. A full cache storage can cause problems on webpages, buttons, and other contents.
To confirm this, use a private or incognito browser. It doesn't use the existing cache data, which is a good way to rule out this issue. The shortcut buttons:
In the private or incognito window, split your transaction again. If it works, close the window and go back to your regular browser. Next, clear its cache storage then close it to complete the process.
Using another supported browser is also a good alternative.
After splitting the amount successfully, I'm sure you have other things to do in QuickBooks Online. Our articles are always available if you need help.

What if I already clicked Add and reconciled? I need to go back and split several transactions I missed..
Hi Goodweather!
Thanks for joining this thread. Let me assist you in splitting transactions.
The purpose of splitting transactions is to be able to categorize each portion of the split independently. For example, if one transaction should hit two income accounts, then you need to split it and categorize each portion accordingly.
Reconciliation only affects the bank or credit card account. However, please note that you won't be able to split it once added and reconciled. You'll need to undo it from the Banking, split and categorize, then reconcile it again.
Follow these steps:
Once done, the transaction will be transferred back to the For review tab. From there, you can split and categorize it.
Also, please note that you'll need to do a mini-reconciliation. That is because undoing a transaction from the Banking will result in an error since it'll be removed from your reconciliation. The mini-reconciliation will mark the split transactions reconciled.
You can check this link: Learn the reconcile workflow in QuickBooks. This has different articles on how to fix reconciliation-related issues.

I am having the same problem. I tried all your suggestions, and nothing has worked. The apply and accept is still grayed out.
Thanks for joining us here, GRNK.
We'd really want to make sure that you're able to divide your transactions between multiple accounts. I also appreciate you telling us that you've followed all the steps that are shared in this thread.
In this case, I recommend reaching out to our phone or chat support teams. They can take a closer look at the bank transactions and check for more information to determine why you're not able to split them.
Follow these steps on how to contact them inside QBO:
Don't hesitate to get back here and keep me posted if you're able to split your banking transactions. It would also be a pleasure to offer our help again you need anything else from us.
Did this get resolved for you? I can't split my transactions anymore also! I have a ton of entries to make, but the darned program won't let me split them now! Please, Quickbooks Support, do not explain to me how to split a transaction: I've been splitting transactions for almost 30 years now. Clearly there was some sort of update done and now it's all messed up. Floatmilwaukee, if you received assistance, I'd love some direction. Otherwise, Quickbooks, please direct this issue to programmers! I was on the phone for over an hour today trying to resolve this. I AM able to split downloaded transactions - as long as I do it from the banking "for review" screen - but ONLY if I do it from that screen. I literally cannot do my work because of this.
