Yes, you can download a csv file from a credit card account. Make sure you choose the correct mapping and the columns you use are the ones required by QBO which is Date, Description, and Amount. This way, QBO will be able to read the data correctly.

How can I import expenses from a CSV file?

Hi:

 

I'm trying to do the same, and following the directions here but, it continues not to work.  I get the message, "

Finished importing transactions.  0 of 104 transactions imported"  I just cannot see what is wrong with the way I have it set up after following these directions.  Is there any possibility of phone support for something like this?  Working with QBDT2019 MAC.  Any help will be appreciated!

To verify, are you trying to import transactions? If so, let's ensure that the file is in the correct format and that you map them properly.

 

When importing CSV Files to QuickBooks, we need to follow the correct format and using .QBO file type in banking transactions. This way, you can import your transactions successfully.

 

These are the formatting restrictions:

 

  • Special characters are not allowed.
    • Do not use characters such as #, %, and & anywhere in the file.
    • Do not use ( ) for negative amounts (use -234, not (234) for negative figures).
    • Do not include currency symbols ($234 should be 234).
    • Do not use commas to separate thousands (2, 111 should be 2111).
  • Zeros (0) are not allowed anywhere in the file ($0 should be left blank).

 

Additionally, let's update your QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release to keep your software up-to-date to get the latest features and fixes.

 

Once done, try importing your files again. If you're still getting a similar result, run the Verify and Rebuild Data Tools. This will help us identify the problem and fix them.

 

Let's follow the steps below on how to verify data:

 

  1. Navigate to the File menu.
  2. Choose Utilities, then select Verify Data.
  3. Click OK to close all windows.

 

If you see “Your data has failed the integrity check” you need to rebuild your file. Otherwise, you’re done.

 

After you’ve verified your data, let's rebuild your company file to fix any errors or data damage. Here's how:

 

  1. Go to the File menu, then choose Utilities.
  2. Select Rebuild Data, then tap on OK to close all windows.
  3. QuickBooks will prompt you to do a backup before rebuilding your company file, select OK.
  4. Follow the on-screen steps to proceed.
  5. Click OK once the rebuild is finished.

How can I import expenses from a CSV file?

I am still unable to import the csv file from my bank.  I've verified data and no problems were found, and I am running the most current release of QB2019 DT.

 

As a test, I tried doing only a single line.  I made sure the the payee name matched exactly  how they are named in QB.  I am going to upload 3 sequential screen shots showing the process and results.  I am at a loss.....

I appreciate the things you’ve done so far, @. I’m here to provide additional info and troubleshooting to ensure you can import them into QBO.

 

Your bank transactions can only be imported via a QBO file. This is the same when adding lists in Quickbooks Desktop. That's why you're unable to import them into the program. Therefore, you'll need to convert the .csv file to a .qbo format.

 

Here's how:

 

1. Go to the Banking menu.

2. Select Website. This opens a browser window to your bank’s website.

Note: You can also download transactions outside QuickBooks. Just open a browser and go to your bank’s website.

3. Sign in to your online banking account.

4. Go to your transactions, then enter the time you wish to display. If you’re not asked for a date range, you’ll see the maximum number of transactions your bank allows.

Note: Steps on how to download QuickBooks Web Connect files vary per bank. If you’re not sure how to download the .qbo file from their website, contact your bank for help.

5. In QuickBooks, go to Banking, then Downloaded Transactions.

6. Select Import File, then look for the .qbo file you downloaded.

Firstly, there are others at Intuit who are saying you can import from a CSV file.  See beginning of this thread.

 

Secondly, I'd MUCH rather be able to download the QBO file but, my understanding is that Intuit stopped supporting Direct Connect in the older desktop versions of QB.  This is the message I get when I go to download the way I've been downloading for the past 20 years or so.

 

Lastly, I do not have "Website" under my Banking menu.  I'm running QB2019 DT  MAC.

 

Any help will be appreciated.

Thank you for consistently updating us. I'll continue to help you out.

 

First, I want to clarify that the users in this thread are on QBO and QB for Mac. QBO has an option to upload bank transactions through the Banking menu using a .CSV or a .QBO file, while QB Mac can only use a .QBO file. However, QB Mac has an option to import transactions through its File menu using a CSV file.

 

Therefore, you are correct that we can import transactions into QB Desktop for Mac using a CSV file, but you need to add information in the required fields to do the process. For example, a transaction must have an expense account/category in the source file (CSV). I checked your first screenshot and found that the Expense account field is empty. Please add an expense account to the transaction in the spreadsheet and try uploading again.

 

You're also right that Direct Connect is no longer available for retired or unsupported versions (2019 and below). Therefore, you cannot fetch transactions directly from your bank. Uploading transactions using a .QBO file is also discontinued. That's why you don't see Website in the Banking section anymore. Please refer to the QB Desktop Discontinuation Policy for more details.

 

If you only have a handful of transactions to add, you may want to enter them manually instead.

Thank you for consistently being here, and helping!

 

I just did the one item test WITH expense account and it worked!  I have a year's worth of txn's to import so, doing so manually would be painful.  There's still a lot of manual work to do on these CSV's to get them to work but, using the import method is still faster/easier than manual entries.

 

I'll come back to this thread if more questions but, for now it appears solved!

It's always a pleasure to help you from here! I wish I could help you update your transactions though. My suggestion is to upload month by month worth of transactions, so you easily watch out for mistakes. Also, please don't forget to back up your data now and in between uploads so you can preserve the uploaded transactions with the correct details.

At this time, the option to import mileage data to QuickBooks Online (QBO) is unavailable. As an alternative, you can add the mileage manually into QBO. To do so, you can follow the steps below:

 

  1. Click Mileage from the left menu.
  2. Select Add Trip, then add the information like date, starting/ending points, distance, and the purpose.
  3. Click Save to confirm.

WHAT Transaction tab? I'm on Quickbooks and I don't find ANY transaction tab. I downloaded the CVS file and save it. I cannot figure out where to go to upload this CVS file into my Quickbooks existing credit card account! The instructions leave something out that I'm not understanding. 

 

Maybe someone could start with Open Quickbooks, go to the Credit Card account and open it up. Look for X, Y and Z then go to the CVS file through the import... yadda yadda. But starting with "go to the transaction tab" is not helping me. I have desktop Quickbooks Pro. How hard can it be?
