Hi there, @Otto50.

I appreciate you for getting back to us here in the Community. Allow me to chime, and share some updates about the new release in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.

Yes, you're right. The new update for the 2021 version is for compatibility with the new macOS Big Sur. Installing the latest release ensures the program is fully functional.

For additional reference, you can use the following article to run an update within QuickBooks, as well as the manual process through our website: Update QuickBooks for Mac to the latest release.

Fill me in if you have additional questions about the new update in QuickBooks. I'm always here to help. Take care always.

I was on with a chat with Intuit support this past Wednesday. After a lengthy waiting time and unclear answers, I was told the R3 patch (latest upgrade) makes Quickbooks for Mac 2021 compatible with Big Sur. The answer was a little unclear. Just want to double check if it's a correct advisement. Just need this to work and not cause further uncertainty. Hopefully there are answers out there. My current version after the update is:

QuickBooks 20.0.2.814 R3

Thanks

Thanks for getting back in here, @Otto50.

Currently, no supported version of QuickBooks for Mac is fully compatible with this macOS version. Our engineers are still working on releasing the compatibility update for the rest of the Mac versions. If you're using QuickBooks Mac 2021, we recently deployed a new update to make this version run on the new Big Sur system.

You can check this article for the steps on how to update your 2021 Mac version: Update QuickBooks for Mac to the latest release.

For now, I suggest visiting this article from time to time for updates regarding the compatibility issue: Intuit’s support policy for QuickBooks for Mac running on macOS 11 Big Sur.

I've also added this article that can guide you more with QuickBooks Desktop Mac: New in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2021.

Know that we're open 24/7 to help you. Have a pleasant day.

Thanks for getting in touch with us today, @betterose33,

The only time you can view the data from QuickBooks Mac Desktop into QuickBooks Online is through conversion. Also, the information you will see after the file is converted depends on the source company file.

You can read through these articles for more information about the conversion:

However, if you don't intend to convert and just wanted to view the data on the current version, you can contact our Technical Support Team. They can help locate your Mac files and help you restore them so you can complete your work.

To contact our support, click this link to initiate a live session: QuickBooks Desktop for Mac chat

Let me know how it goes. I want to keep track of this topic and make sure it gets taken care of. I'm also here if you ever need further help with any other things in QuickBooks. Have a good day!

Locating your data and get you back to working order is my top priority, betterose33.

Since your unable to access your QuickBooks account, I recommend contacting our Technical Support Team again. One of our representatives can further check on how to retrieve your company file.

I guess I am just surprised you would release Quickbooks for Mac 2021 and not be compatible with Big Sur. Why would I upgrade??

Hi there, @mjzdsa.

I'm here to share some updates about QuickBooks Desktop for Mac compatibility with macOS Big Sur.

We've recently released a new version of QuickBooks which is the QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2021. This release is required to make it compatible with the new macOS Big Sur in which our engineers are still working. That's why we recommend updating your QuickBooks regularly, so once any updates are released, it will sync into the program.

To update, here's what you'll need to do:

  1. From the QuickBooks▼ dropdown, choose Check for QuickBooks Updates.
  2. If a newer version is available, select Install Update.
  3. When prompted, select Install and Relaunch.
  4. Once the update is complete, QuickBooks for Mac automatically opens.

For more details about updating QuickBooks, see this article: Update QuickBooks for Mac to the latest release.

Moreover, I suggest visiting this article from time to time to know updates regarding the compatibility issue: Intuit’s support policy for QuickBooks for Mac running on macOS 11 Big Sur.

If you have any other concerns, don't hesitate to let me know. I'd be here to help. Take care.

Perhaps it is me and I am just a bit dense. . . . Is QB for Mac 2021 compatible or not? Please offer a simply yes or no. I currently have QB for mac 2019 and assume that Big Sur would not be compatible for a while. I have gone done this route with Intuit in the past and lost valuable information and system crashes because I updated my Mac OS too quickly. So there is no further confusion, my software is updated automatically for my version.

Hello there, @mjzdsa.

Yes, the newly released version for QuickBooks Mac(R3) is compatible with macOS Big Sur. Let me guide you in downloading the update.

First, let's first make sure to create a backup copy of your company file. Here's how:

  1. Launch QuickBooks.
  2. Go to the File menu.
  3. Select the folder to store your backup.
  4. Click the Start Backup button.

Now, let's download the release by following these steps:

  1. Open the QuickBooks drop-down menu.
  2. Select Check for QuickBooks Updates.
  3. On the prompt window, click Install Update.
  4. Hit Install and Relaunch.

You can read through this article as an additional reference about downloading updates: Update QuickBooks for Mac to the latest release.

Hey half dome.

Thanks for stopping by the Community, at this time, we don't have an estimated time as to when QBDT Mac 2019 will be compatible with Big Sur. In the meantime, you can refer to the articles found here in our QuickBooks Blog. All information on changes and updates can be found there.

Thanks for your time, and I hope you have an excellent day.

QuickBooks Mac 2021 and 2020 are now Big Sur compatible. We are working on 2019 but can't pre-announce a date. Its always possible we could run into an insurmountable issue but my hope is that the issues we've corrected in 2020 and 2021 will be applicable to 2019 as well.

Hello, chabberdab.

At the moment, we're unable to fully support Big Sur with QuickBooks Desktop for Mac. You can open the program, but you might encounter some unexpected behavior.

We hope to support the operating system in the future. For now, you can check out this article for more information: System requirements for QuickBooks Desktop 2020 and Enterprise Solutions 20.0

You can also visit our QuickBooks Blog to be updated on the latest news and updates.

Thank you for your time and if there's anything else we can help with, we're just a few clicks away. Take care and stay safe.

Nope. Big Sur is supported in QuickBooks Mac 2021 and 2020 now. We are working on 2019.

It seems remarkable that Big Sur has been out for a couple of months, ALL of our other financial software and database work and have been successfully integrated into OS 11. Intuit is consistently behind. I recognize that it is a matter of programing and engineering. Regardless, it is not like you did not know it was coming. The solutions from Intuit so far have been to spend the money and upgrade to QB for mac 2021.  Not a solution, a marketing move and it is not appreciated. DO BETTER NEXT TIME. We are running a business that must rely on Quickbooks for mac. We don't have time for this nilly willy approach.

Do better next time? This is how they have operated for the last SEVERAL releases. It's unacceptable. 2019 is the last version I'll be purchasing because of their terrible support.

You are not wrong. I was being a bit too soft on Intuit. It is an ongoing negative experience. It smacks of, lets get the latest release in line and hope that the customer will be impatient and upgrade. In case Intuit has forgotten, we are the customer.

This is sadly par for the course with Intuit. QB2019 is the only app left on my "cannot upgrade yet" list. When even Cisco is more responsive, you have issues. It's not like QB requires a kernel/system extension or anything.
I honestly think they're unwilling to spend the resources on a proper Dev team for MacOS. It feels like they've got maybe 3-5 poor coders stuck in a basement somewhere. With the price increases and lag in support, it's pretty much "go QBO or go away".
And when I look that those two options, well, it's an easier choice than Intuit realizes. Most small businesses like myself are on QB because 'that's what the accountant is comfortable with' - but most accountants aren't super fond of QBO just yet. So if I'm going to make a change and learn a new system, and require my accountant just suck it up, then I'm going to seriously look at competitors.

Thanks for reaching out to the Community space, johnl1.

I'm here to share some updates about the macOS 11 Big Sur compatibility.

As of the moment, only QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2021 R3 and 2020 R6 are compatible with Big Sur.  Please know that you can still open the other versions, but you might encounter some unexpected behaviors. If you're currently using QuickBooks for Mac 2020 or 2021, you can follow the steps provided by my colleague, IamjuViel in updating it to the latest version.

Unfortunately, we're unable to provide an estimated time as to when the other versions will be fully compatible with Big Sur. Once the final version of the macOS is released, it takes some time to test our products against it to identify any issues that need to be addressed.

As we assess this opportunity, you can visit our blog from time to time to stay current with our latest product updates and news.

Feel free to drop a comment below if you have any other concerns or additional questions. Have a great holiday.
