Looks like there was a function added recently that predicts and categorizes transactions once confirmed. Is there a way to turn this off?
Hello there, SS123.
Thanks for joining us here in the Community. I’m here to help stop the categorization of your transactions correctly.
We haven’t received any updates about QuickBooks Self-Employed being able to categorize transactions automatically. It’s possible that the Rules feature in the program is causing this to happen.
Once you’ve enabled it, QBSE will assign your downloaded bank entries right-away to a specific payee or categories. Let’s double-check this setting on your account, then edit or delete it if necessary.
Here's how:
Please note that if you delete a rule, it won't be applied going forward. However, it also does not erase anything that's been applied so far.
For more detailed information, you can check out this article:
Use rules to speed up reviewing and categorizing transactions
That should do it! By following these steps, your incoming downloaded transactions won’t be categorized automatically. And, you’re now able to manage them accordingly.
Feel free to let me know as to how the predicting of transactions goes. I’ll be on standby for your response. Have an awesome week ahead.
This didn't answer my questions actually. I am talking about a separate feature which is new and was recently added to my account. It categorizes transactions automatically and tags it as predicted then asks for conformation. Hopefully there is a way to turn this off. It was added within the last 2-3 weeks.
Hello there, SS123.
Thanks for getting back to us about the transactions tagged as Predicted in QuickBooks Self-Employed.
QuickBooks Self-Employed recently launched this new feature about predicting transactions. Right now, it's on beta testing and the option to disable this aspect is not yet available.
I'll let you know once I receive an update from our product development team. If you have additional questions, please don't hesitate to let me know.
I would also like to be updated on when we can turn this off. I feel like I still have to check and confirm the transaction. It is MUCH better for me to have eyes on the transaction the first time and pick a category than to check what Quickbooks does. I really dislike this new feature.
Thank you, Deborah O'Leary
Great to see you here today, @doleary,
I appreciate your time joining our forum. I can add a bit more about the predictions feature in QuickBooks Self-Employed.
While this feature is currently on Beta testing, the option to turn off predictions is unavailable at the moment. Our Product Developers are already working on this functionality.
You'll receive an email notification once an update is available for QuickBooks Self Employed.
In the meantime, you can you can manually edit the transactions to correct the categories assigned. You may want to check this article to guide you with the process: Review, mark, or change transaction
Keep me updated for all your QuickBooks Self Employed questions. @doleary. I'm here to lend you a helping hand. Have a great day!
Hi Jen,
Any updates on this issue. I find it extremely frustrating when I have set up rules to save time, and when I go in to edit a split and change the vendor names, Quickbooks automatically assigns the category to sales of product income. Even though I have set up different categories in rules. I then have to change multiple categories. Why does Quickbooks presume every single vendor should be assigned to sales of product income, and why does it change the category even when I have a category selected already? My workflow is slowed drastically by this "feature" it takes me four times longer to code my transactions due to this automation. You are not making your customer's lives easier with this.
Thanks for following this thread, @lbduxbury.
I know how you feel about your experience and I appreciate you for sharing your emotions here in the Community.
As stated by my colleague, this feature is newly added in QuickBooks. Our engineers are still working on polishing it to make it more useful to all users.
About the workflow that slowed drastically, I'd suggest you use Chrome to get the best experience possible. If you are already using Chrome, ensure you are using the latest release. Here's how:
If you want a more faster workflow experience with QuickBooks Online, you can also run the QuickBooks Online Desktop App. This app is only available for Windows and Mac.
Here's our best article that you can read through: Why is my Quickbooks Online slow? It will help you learn about several things that you can look at to ensure you're getting the most out of your user experience.
We appreciate your patience on this matter, @lbduxbury. Let us know how it goes with you as it will be a great help to other users who are also following this thread.
My business transactions have been changed as well as my new personal transactions. What a mess!!! I am Currently changing transactions dating back to July! I have spent days trying to re- categorize these (back to July 2019). I have ‘income’ from ‘credits’ and a ton of travel expenses as ‘transfers’. Please get this fixed. If I wouldn’t have gone back to change these, I probably would have gotten audited.
It's been over a year now that this prediction "feature" has been occurring and it's still incredibly frustrating! If it's a "beta" feature it should never have been introduced without some way to control it. What is the status on being able to disable this?
Thanks for getting back to us, sibelius.
We haven't received any updates from our Product Team about removing predictions in QuickBooks Self-Employed.
Rest assured, we'll take note of this and send it again to our Product Engineers so they can provide updates regarding this feature.

Predicted groups is consistently and reliably wrong.
Give users the ability to turn it off!
Miscategorizing a transaction has financial implications and creates tax liabilities.
Predicted groups makes more work for me.
Give users the ability to turn it off!
This feature is making categorizing my transactions ridiculously tedious! I'm thinking about switching to a new accounting software... why on earth can we not turn this option off?!?!
What is the update on this? I agree with the comments on this is very frustrating. Turn off the predictions this is what adding the rule is for. This stupid prediction feature overrides and messes up transactions and also importing CSV files.
Hello there, GreenCountryTablesdotcom.
I understand the impact of this on your bank transactions.
There isn't an update yet about this new feature. Though, this feature has an advantage as it automatically categorizes the downloaded transactions and tag it as predicted.
I'd like to thank you for your patience and understanding. Comment again if you need anything else.
No, the fact that it automatically categorizes the downloaded transactions and tags them as predicted is NOT an advantage and is the exact reason we are all complaining about it.
it is a DISADVANTAGE because it’s predictions are terrible and constantly catagorizes things incorrectly. Even items I have set rules for.
Please listen to your community. I’m switching to a new service
This is not an advantage, it’s a disadvantage and that’s exactly what we’re trying to tell you.
It’s VERY bad in its predictions and is completely screwing up my books. It’s even recategorizing things I have set rules for.
please listen to your community. If this doesn’t change I’ll be going back to Wave.
I agree it is a disadvantage. If rules are set by the person using QBO then allow the set rules change the fields not the QBO prediction. Defeats the purpose of having rules even set. I had to delete all my rules and start over due to QBO prediction and now cannot allow any transaction to auto accept due to prediction changing category field. It needs an OFF button asap.
Basically, QBSE is sending a message. Do it our way or find another vendor. It's the Microsoft, Apple logic.
Yet, one more nail in their coffin
This has gone long beyond patience and well into the realm of "We don't care what you want, we will just keep stringing you along"...
The feature is horrible. Based on the 2 years of complaints with the feature it has always been horrible. How is that you have not put in a simple "Off" feature? How bad are your developers that they can't figure that out?
This Predictions feature is TERRIBLE! Please hurry to get rid of this feature!
Please add option to remove predictions; not only are the predictions always incorrect, it makes it harder to search for the correct category. I am new to QB but it appears I have to delete the prediction before I can search for the correct category.
What the actual hell is going on here? Are you seriously telling me these idiots haven't invented on off-button for a program breaking feature? After 2 years?
I would like this disabled as well. The predictions are based on costs occurred during a job. If there is no job, no need for these costs. Not a helpful tool.
