I used to have quickbooks software with enhanced payroll however we close shop in 2020 and right now for the final w2 and 940 do we have to mail it in or do we need to stay subscribed in order to have quickbooks submit these forms electronically along with payment for us?
Hi fds!
You can always go back to this thread if you need more help.
We'll help you with this. You'll want to contact our Payroll Support team to get help reactivating your payroll service for filing purposes only. They're open on weekdays from 6 AM to 6 PM PST. I suggest reaching them early in the morning coz it's filing season and there will be many customers calling in.
Let me know if you have more questions about your subscription. Have a good one!
Thanks Is there any cost to do this and can they also make payments or only filing?
I appreciate your time getting back here, fds.
To clarify, did you cancel payroll and want to reactivate the account? Depending on the payroll service you are subscribed, there will be a renewal fee.
If you have QuickBooks Desktop Payroll Assisted, Intuit files and pays the taxes for you. I'd recommend reaching out to our Payroll Service Team for more details. You can use the link provided by my colleague JessT.
Otherwise, check out this article for the steps on how to reactivate your QuickBooks Desktop Payroll Enhanced, Standard, or Basic payroll: Reactivate your QuickBooks Payroll subscription and manually file and pay the forms.

I can share more information about e-pay and e-file in QuickBooks, @fds.
You'll just need to have an active payroll subscription to submit e-payments to tax agencies and e-file federal and several state payroll tax forms directly from QuickBooks Desktop.
Once you reactivate your payroll subscription, make sure to comply with all the necessary requirements to e-file your 940 tax forms and all other forms. Here are the requirements:
You can check this article for more information: E-file 940, 941, and 944 tax forms. Once done, you can now check e-file or e-pay status.
I'm always here if you need more help or if you have additional concerns in submitting your forms. Feel free to reply to this post and I'll get back to you. Take care always.
Thanks for the information. But I am saying is I don't want to pay another month of subscription. I just want to submit these forms, can i do it without purchasing another month
Hi fds!
I understand that you want to submit W-2 and 940 forms without resubscribing to the payroll service. You need an active payroll subscription in order to file these forms via QuickBooks Desktop.
The best option so you don't have to subscribe again is to manually file them. Here are the quick links to federal tax forms with the instructions.
I'll be here if you have more questions. Take care!
