There isn't a need to open the app before starting a trip. However, there's an ongoing investigation about the app being unable to track your mileage automatically. Rest assured that our product engineers are actively working to have a permanent fix.
Here are the two alternative options you can perform to track your mileage and complete your task:
I want to ensure you're in the loop about the investigation's status (INV-40464) and its resolution. With this, I recommend contacting our Customer Care Team. They can add your company to the list of affected users so you'll receive email updates. They are available from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm (Mondays to Fridays) PST and from 6:00 am to 3:00 pm (Saturdays) PST. Let me guide you how.
You can always go to the Mileage menu to categorize your mileage after a trip. From there, you can also export it and edit your vehicle info. To learn more about this process, go through this article: Track Mileage in QBO.

When I go to add a trip, it takes me out of the app immediately.

I'd be glad to help you troubleshoot the QuickBooks App.
Before that, I'd recommend keeping your mobile operating system and QuickBooks app to be updated to the latest version. Once done, we can refresh the QBO app.
