Good morning. I am attempting to export from online payroll to online quickbooks. We have had the same subscription for over 14 months and have just started having trouble with this the last few weeks.
If we try to export from a report or using the export shortcut, we receive this error message:
Unable to export at this time. Please try again later.
If we go into the payroll setting and turn off the export and turn it back on, we get the following message when we attempt to sync
Unable to select company at this time. Please contact support.
I have called support numerous times and have not gotten anywhere. One tech told me the "link appeared to be expired" and that IT would look into it but we never heard back. In the meantime, we have been unable to export paychecks or taxes to our QB account so our accountant can't see the amounts. VERY FRUSTRATED at this point!
Any suggestions??
Thanks for getting back with the Community, REPTILE.
There's a couple known reasons you could be encountering issues with exporting payroll data into QuickBooks. One possibility is that you haven't completed your payroll setup. Only accounts which have finished setting up their payroll can export payroll data.
Here's how to get started on the setup if you're using a Core or Premium subscription:
When you complete your Business info section, you can start adding the first employee. If you're not prepared to, you can close your setup and return to the tasks later by going to your Payroll screen, then selecting Overview.
Here's how to get started on the setup if you're working with an Elite subscription:
Next, you'll need to complete your payroll setup tasks. Once your payroll setup is complete, you'll be able to export payroll data into QuickBooks Online.
In the event you have a standalone payroll subscription and it's connected with your QuickBooks Online account, the export connection will have expired when your accounts were connected. This means you won't be able to export payroll data from the standalone payroll account into QuickBooks Online.

Please feel welcome to send a reply if there's any additional questions. Have an awesome Friday!
As I mentioned, we have been set up and exporting without issue for over a year. Everything is set up but the sync does not appear to be working. We have made no changes whatsoever. This has been an ongoing issue every sine the export shortcut was added a few months ago. Intuit has not been any help and we have spent hours on the phone.
Thanks for following up with the Community, REPTILE. I appreciate you reviewing our recommended troubleshooting.
Since you've already confirmed your payroll setup is complete and you don't have a standalone payroll subscription that's connected with your account, but you're still unable to export payroll data into QuickBooks, I'd initially recommend checking the browser you're using.
It's possible this could have something to do with temporary internet files. Browsing applications store these types of records, but sometimes they can cause issues with certain webpages. You can open a private window and check to see if you're able to export payroll data into your books without encountering an "Unable to export at this time." message.
Here's how to access incognito mode in some of the most commonly used web browsers:
If you're able to export successfully while browsing privately, it's safe to say this problem's being caused by your browser. It can be fixed by clearing cached data and Intuit-specific cookies.
In the event the message continues displaying while browsing in incognito mode, you'll initially want to try switching to another browsing application.
Here's a list of supported browsers:
QuickBooks supports the current and two previous versions of browsers. If you find that you're using an unsupported version, make sure to update it to its latest release. Steps for doing so can be found on the particular company's website.
In the event you've found no problems that could be causing this with your browser, you'll want to check the operating system and internet speed you're working with.
Here's our recommended operating systems and internet speeds:
If you meet our system requirements, but are still encountering a "Unable to export at this time." message while trying to export payroll data, I'd recommend using a different device and/or internet connection. If it continues happening on other devices and internet connections, you'll want to continue getting in touch with our Customer Care team. They'll be able to pull up your account in a secure environment, conduct further research with you, and create an investigation ticket if necessary.
They can be reached while you're signed in.
Here's how:
Be sure to review their support hours so you'll know when agents are available.

If there's any additional questions, I'm just a post away. Have a lovely day!
I have done all of you suggestions with no resolution.

I have had the export issue for only one of my acocunts. The largest one for over 2 weeks and QB has been useless in solving this issue. They do not communicate and the agent can only escalate it to the techs which gives us absolutely nothing. I am so disappointed with them for lack of communication as well as not seeing this as a major issue. If we could at least have an alternative to import in CVS format or something like that it would be a relief to know that I don't have to enter 40 paychecks with detail into my QB online.
I am Tired of being IGNored!!!!!
So sorry to hear you are experiencing this too! I have received the same answer - "we will elevate it to IT and we will get back to you" and then they never do. I had a supervisor on the phone last week who said he would get an answer and call me back and never did. I am pretty disgusted with the customer service. We have 3 accounts with them and I am entertaining moving them all come January 1 despite the amount of work that will require. I can understand a "bug", however, I cannot accept the lack of assistance. I had one of their techs insisting you can't export from one to the other! WTH???? I explained we have been doing it without issue for over a year and now it won't work. For us, the issue seemed to start when they added the "shortcut" link. We need a workaround until it is resolved!!! I will certainly let you know if I get anywhere. I have lost track of the amount of time I have wasted on this!!!!
Having the same problem, we had IOP for over a decade, they switched us to a standalone QB payroll core company and we export payroll data from there to our main QBO company, the export function breaks about every 3-4 months and each time it does, we have to spend hours on the phone trying what is essentially the same trouble shooting tasks over and over then they finally escalate and we wait for days to hear back. It has been doing this every few months for 2-3 years since we were forced to switch from IOP to QB standalone. Right now we can not get any data out of our QB payroll company in any format whatsoever. Screenshots below 'we hit a snag' error is all we get when trying to fix/remap our export settings to our main QBO company. We have case number now and still waiting to hear back, our books on our main company are completely inaccurate as we're missing 10s of thousands of dollars in pay check, commission, and payroll tax transactions...So frustrating might need to finally switch to a more stable vendor software solution.
We hear your sentiments. I know this has become challenging on your end. Yet, we appreciate you for reaching our support to raise your concern. This means a lot on our end.
For us to gain updates on the case you have, we recommend routing back to QuickBooks Online Payroll support. They have the complete tools to review your case number and provide you with the recent running of it.
Furthermore, they can create an investigation into this issue, if they notice that it's affecting a number of QBO users.
Moreover, we'll also share these articles to help you manage your payroll data:

appreciate the reply but we're looking anywhere we can for Help. I've already contacted payroll support, my prior message explains where that has gotten us to this moment...stuck
Yes, appreciate the reply as well. We have countless hours in with support to no avail. AS SATELITE ARMY said, we may have to look elsewhere for our accounting needs. This has been going on for months with no end in site. I just received notice that our monthly rate is increasing which is just salt in the wound. Unacceptable.
I have the same issue, which just started. I've been on Payroll Online all year.
Yes, I have the same problem. I've been on this system all year, and this just started happening. This will definitely affect my month end reports to management.
I appreciate your patience and efforts in trying to resolve this issue exporting your payroll data, @WandaH. I'm aiming to provide you with a better experience than what you're currently encountering.
I'd like to verify a few pieces of information first so we can investiagte for more thoroughly and guide you on the next steps you need to take . Are you receiving any errors or unexpected outcomes while exporting? It'd be helpful if you could share some screenshots.
Like what my colleague ZackE said, there are also other possible reasons for this. First is an incomplete set up of the payroll system. Only fully configured accounts permit the exportation of payroll data. You can check out this link for the detailed steps: Get started with QuickBooks Online Payroll.
If you have a standalone payroll subscription that is associated to your QuickBooks Online account, it's likely that the export connection expired when the accounts were linked. As a result, you'll be unable to export payroll data from the standalone payroll account to QuickBooks Online.
For future referencem, check these articles about paying your employees:
Keep me posted on how it goes. If you have other payroll concerns, please don't hesitate to comment below. I'll be glad to help. Take care always.
We've been setup and exporting for years, the Issue is the link between standalone payroll and main QB company ID keeps breaking, this continues to recur about 2-3 times a year. we've been escalated up and still waiting to here from engineers, the same process we have to muddle through every time this happens. The senior tech support person (she's very nice but we're not making any headway) we've been working with said she has all kinds of tools but plainly said, I can't get into your export settings even with her Intuit senior support software tools and only an engineer could access our file and settings...so we wait. also there were screenshots in my post and here they are again, thx for trying
Why would my payroll setup suddenly be incomplete now when we've been on this system all year?
I'd love to find another system also. I just contacted Chat support, and they say I'm not the primary contact so they can't help. Been the primary contact for years!
After 1.5 hours, no "support" from Support!
Yup - they told me I wasn't the primary and I have been for years. I have spent so many hours on with customer support, chat, etc, that I have lost count. Impossible to effectively run a company like this. I understand systems will have issues but the lack of support is unacceptable. I am looking at new options for 2024 as it is easier to move at the beginning of the year. What a hassle! Oh and I just was notified they were raising my rates. Are you kidding me??
Yup - I got this answer too. We have changed NOTHING!!!!!
I checked into ADP last year, but they don't suit our needs.
I was on the phone with Support for over 3 hours this morning trying to resolve this issue. This is not a user issue! They agreed that it is a system-wide issue. In the meantime, is there a way to export the data to a QBO file to upload into QuickBooks?
