Is quickbooks online the same as quickbooks self-employed? Do I have to subscribe to both?

Hello zackgroberg,

Welcome to the Community.

QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Self-Employed are two different versions. The main difference between both programs is that QuickBooks Self-Employed is designed for Independent Contractors, while Simple Start is for Small Businesses.

If you're an Independent Contractor and need to separate your business and personal expenses, you can use the QBSE. Otherwise, you can use the QuickBooks Online Plus/Essentials/Simple Start.

I've got you a link that shows the comparison of these versions: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/aag/accountants/compchart/.

Let us know if you have any questions. Thanks!

 Hi there, @jaysiah.

Cash Flow Frog integrates seamlessly with QuickBooks Online. Connecting the application into QuickBooks Self-Employed (QBSE) is currently unavailable.

I can see the need of linking the application to QBSE. Rest assured that our engineers are working nonstop to enhance the product for our customer's convenience. While they do so, I encourage visiting our blog site to stay current with the latest QuickBooks news and feature enhancements.

For additional tips, while working with QuickBooks, you can as well read the topics from our help articles.

Please feel free to leave a comment below if you have any other QuickBooks questions. I'm more than happy to help. Have a good day!

QBSE is a stand alone product. You are unable to migrate data from QBO to QBSE.

Welcome to the Community, timala.

You can cancel your existing QuickBooks Online (QBO) subscription and sign up for a new QuickBooks Self-Employed (QBSE) account. Currently, switching from QBO to QBSE isn't possible. This is because both platforms are different and designed for specific types of businesses.

Here's how to cancel:

  1. Open a web browser on the computer.
  2. Sign in to your account as an admin.
  3. Use the Gear (⚙️) icon, then choose Account and settings.
  4. Access your Billing & Subscription tab.
  5. In the QuickBooks section, pick Cancel subscription or Cancel online. If you're canceling a trail, click Cancel trial.
  6. Follow the onscreen steps.

In the event you purchased QuickBooks from a mobile app store, you'll need to cancel your subscription there.

For paid and trial subscriptions, Intuit will hang on to the data for one year. This allows you to pick up where you'd left off if you decide to reactivate your account.

Once you're prepared, you can start a new QBSE subscription.

QBSE is a stand alone product as I mentioned earlier. Most 3rd party apps only support QBD and QBO. If you are using BigCommerce, you have to switch to QBO.

Is there a way to switch between the two? I'm using Self Employed right now, but think it might be better to open an Online account for my LLC.

I am a Realtor-self employed, independent contractor. Should I use QB SE or Simple Start? I have no employees and sometimes 1099 other professionals who help in my business.

Hello realtor barbie!

Let me explain the difference between QuickBooks Self-Employed and QuickBooks Online.

QuickBooks Self-Employed is designed for freelancers, self-employed individuals, and independent contractors. With this, you can track your income, expenses, mileage, tax info, and prepare your Schedule C.

On the other hand, QuickBooks Online is for small business owners. This has accounting and bookkeeping features to help you in managing your business.

Also, please note that you won't be able to track contractor payments and file 1099 in QuickBooks Self-Employed as QuickBooks Online does.

I suggest you check our Plans & Pricing page so you can decide which version fits your needs.

I've also included some articles so you can decide better what to choose:

QBSE is a stand alone product. Pick QBO instead and you may integrate with another app later.

I'll shed some light on your confusion, @Chelz.

QuickBooks Self-Employed (QBSE) is designed for a sole proprietorship. This helps track your self-employed income, expenses, and taxes.

While QuickBooks Online (QBO) helps you manage your business, accounting, and bookkeeping.

To have a better view of them, you can visit our Plans & Pricing page and see which version suits your business needs. Furthermore, you can also consult your accountant to guide you on the best action to take.

I'm also sharing these resources that you can utilize in learning your ways around the two versions of QuickBooks:

Is there a product that helps this self-employed sole-proprietor who is a growing small business owner?  We need all of the elements of QB Online Essentials along with the QB Self-Employed for estimated quarterly taxes.  We're a little stuck as to what we should be doing.  We've used GoDaddy Bookkeeping since 2016 and got an email today that they are closing their business.  It did most of Essentials, and calculated estimated quarterly taxes.  What do you suggest?

 A lovely day to you.

I understand you need a product that fits your growing business. I'm here to give you an overview of the two different products in QuickBooks.

QuickBooks Self-Employed is cloud-based accounting software designed specifically for self-employed individuals such as freelancers, real estate agents, Uber drivers, and independent consultants. With its QuickBooks Self-Employed Tax Bundle, you can track income and expenses, track mileage to and from clients, and file your taxes.

While the advantages of QuickBooks Online are the ability to manage unpaid bills and assign hours worked and billable expenses to specific customers. In addition to helping you pay bills on time, recording unpaid bills are necessary if you need to produce accrual-based financial statements.

The best QuickBooks Online version depends on the size of your business and your particular needs. Since we're unable to recommend a product that fits your company, I suggest consulting an accountant to guide you further about this topic.

See this article to know more about the different QuickBooks products and versions.

Once you've decided which plans you want to use, check out this article to guide you through the process: Upgrade or downgrade your QuickBooks Online subscription.

You can also follow @Fiat Lux - ASIA's suggestion about product difference and purchasing a third party application by visiting this link: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/app/apps/home/

I'll around if you help you manage your account in QuickBooks. Tell me more in the comment section. Keep safe.

Thank you @Fiat Lux - ASIA .  We are transferring our GoDaddy info to Essentials.  However, wow do we go about estimating quarterly taxes? It seems that feature is only available in the Self-Employed option?  This is our only stumbling block.  Your help and suggestions are much appreciated!

Hello, 9130353630627266.

Yes, you are correct. The estimated quarterly taxes is only available in QuickBooks Self-Employed. It's because estimated quarterly taxes is a personal event or for freelancers, while the QBO is for small business owners or double-entry accounting.

You can utilize a 3rd party app tax tool online or visit our App Center as a workaround.

Let me add these resources here that have detailed information about taxes:

I hope this gives you clarification as to why Estimated Quarterly taxes is only available in QBSE. Take care, and have a great day!
