I need to see if anyone else is experiencing this issue. I have called QB support twice and still not comfortable in the replies I am getting. On 12/21/2024 I was notified via email (see attached email from State of LA) by LA Dept of Revenue that Louisiana Department of Revenue has published an emergency rule updating the state’s income tax withholding tables and formula. I updated my payroll update before 12/31/24 to see if this update was applied but there was no mention of any changes for Louisiana tax tables, then again today on several occasions I did update to see if it picked up changes and still nothing is showing as being updated for State of Louisiana. Both QB support phone calls saying that the update should be there but it does not show anything applicable to this emergency rule. How can I get some sort of documentation from Intuit that the latest update 22501 includes the emergency rule that is supposed to be in place for 1/1/2025 before I run my payroll? Anyone in Louisiana experiencing this same issue and if so how can we get this payroll update to pick up the changes for this new State reule?
The new tax table for Louisiana state income tax for 2025 has not yet been implemented in QuickBooks Desktop Payroll, dbh1966. Our Compliance Team is already working to ensure that our payroll services fully align with the new withholding table and formula for your state.
I'd also like to clarify that although 22501 is the most recent update, it does not include the new tax table for Louisiana state income tax. Let me share this article that lists all changes that are included in this update: Get latest payroll news and updates in QuickBooks Desktop Payroll.
I know that your recent interaction with our phone support team didn't meet your expectations. Rest assured that you'll be informed once a new tax table is ready and available through a prompt inside QuickBooks about an update.
Once everything is already updated and installed, create a dummy paycheck to determine the amount difference between the old and new calculations.
From there, you can either create a liability adjustment or edit the state withholding amount in the next paychecks.

Thanks jenop2 for the speedy reply and info. My biggest concern is this new tax table is supposed to be in use 1/1/25 as per the notice from the state, however my first payroll of 2025 is next week, so I'm guessing this means the state deductions for my employees will be incorrect until a payroll update is released by Intuit QB. And if it is incorrect and the update is weeks away from being available, how will the adjustment occur to correct the deficiency or overage from the current state deduction from the employees paychecks?
@dbh1966 Unless QB puts forth more oomph than usual, it probably won't adjust.
While QB does make catch-up or catch-down adjustments when payroll taxes go off the rails, to my knowledge, it only does this with % based payroll taxes like social security and medicare, not state withholding taxes that are dependent on a variety of variables.
jenop2 , thanks, but aren't payroll updates supposed to cover all updates of the taxes: fed, state, mc & ss??
Yes, payroll updates contain federal and state tax tables, including Medicare (MC) and Social Security (SS) rates, dbh1966. I can provide a way to rectify the issue with the current state deductions in the employees' paychecks.
Since payroll taxes are computed based on the updated rates set by your federal and state tax agency, QuickBooks will make catch-up or catch-down adjustments for percentage-based payroll taxes like SS and Medicare. It means it will catch up with the increase on the next paycheck if the rate rises. Conversely, if the rate decreases, it will be adjusted downward on the following paycheck until the year-to-date (YTD) tax is aligned with the new rate.
However, you need to manually adjust the payroll liabilities to correct any disparities in the state deductions from their paychecks for income taxes. Refer to this article for details: Adjust payroll liabilities in QuickBooks Desktop Payroll.
Additionally, you can create a dummy paycheck to preview the amounts involved without saving them. This way, you can record the differences between the old and the new rate calculations of the deductions.
Follow the steps below:
Moreover, please continue to get the latest tax table update in QuickBooks Desktop Payroll to maintain compliance with paycheck calculations. Rest assured that we have a dedicated Team to ensure our payroll services are consistent with new withholding tables and formulas for your state.

Thanks JamaicaA for the informative response, but I'm confused. If I already subscribe to payroll updates which I install regularly and have on auto update and the Louisiana Department of Revenue has published an emergency rule updating the state’s income tax withholding tables and formula, why isn't QB Intuit not picking up the necessary update so that when I update my program, the correct State of LA tax tables are corrected? In December 2024, The State of LA issued an emergency rule for this state tax table update and I do not understand why it's not already in place before 1/1/2025 as it is supposed to be and how am I going to fix either the overage or deficit from my paychecks for my employees? I cannot manually adjust the figures on paychecks if I do not know what I am supposed to be updating them to. Have you read the attached file from the state ?
I appreciate you getting back here in the Community space and clarifying your concern about the tax table updates, @dbh1966. Let me get into this in detail and share some valuable information.
QuickBooks is committed to ensuring compliance with both state and federal tax regulations by consistently updating its tax tables. These updates are crucial for maintaining accurate financial records, calculating taxes correctly, and avoiding any potential fines or penalties from tax authorities.
To ensure that your tax calculations remain accurate and up-to-date, it's essential to regularly update your tax table within QuickBooks. With this, I recommend checking for updates at least quarterly or whenever there are significant changes in tax laws that affect your business. This practice will help you manage your finances more effectively and keep you in compliance with the latest tax requirements.
For your convenience, I'll include a link to this article that can help you get the newest tax table in QuickBooks Payroll to stay compliant with paycheck calculations: Get the latest tax table update in QuickBooks Desktop Payroll.

Sherrie_F Thank you for your response and offer to help, but I think that you and everyone who has responded to try and help me are not understanding what I am saying or asking for help with, nor have they read the attachment I have included about this Emergency Rule from State of Louisiana. I have already reached out to Intuit support and have not received any resolve to this issue from them which clearly has me upset since I should not be having to ask them to handle this. The latest payroll update which is 22501 does not include the Louisiana payroll tax update to this emergency rule from the State of LA. And just so you know, my QB program is set on AUTO UPDATE for my QB Payroll and before every payroll I update regularly and read about all the changes. QB Intuit HAS NOT picked up this Payroll Tax Update for LOUISIANA which was supposed to be in place by 1/1/2025 and it is not reflecting this emergency rule to the payroll state taxes. Please read the attached notification from the state to employers. I cannot manually adjust paychecks with correct payroll tax deductions if I don't know the correct amounts to deduct from my employees checks due to this emergency rule that was issued by the State of Louisiana. After you have read the attachment I have sent and understand that my payroll updates are current, kindly let me know if you have any other suggestions. Thanks again for the help.
I am also in Louisiana and received the notice about the emergency rule back in December. I process payroll semi-monthly. I've checked for updates daily since the email went out and it still hasn't caught the update to the Louisiana withholding tables. With the first payroll of the year coming up, I am very concerned about this and the fact that Intuit has not addressed the changes.
Well this really concerns me. Have you reached out to QB Intuit support as well or just to the community for help? If you have not, contact QB Support and notify them as well. I have been updating my payroll daily hoping the update will be there, sometimes multiple times a day because my first payroll is this week and there is no resolve in sight so far from anyone with this issue getting the Louisiana State Payroll Tax updates.
I'm having the same "issue". I have bonus checks to write and have been putting them off because of this issue. I have to defend QB in this case--our legislatures don't truly understand what it's like running a business. They don't understand that when you wait until the last 2-weeks of the year to make changes like payroll tax tables and sales tax rates, that it puts companies in a huge bind to get their systems updated in-time. QB is in this exact bind....LA didn't get deal passed with enough time for QB to program the tables and standard deduction into the payroll background.
I've decided that if the update is still not there by middle of next week, I will write my checks anyway. Yes, the state withholding on this one check will be incorrect (slightly), but because it's supposed to be a decrease in the table, at least no-one will have too little tax withheld--it would be that they had more withheld than needed--and for many employees, that will probably be okay with them because at the end of the year, it may get them a few more bucks back.
I have too many employees to have to do "manual" calculations by using the state's chart.
Still no QB payroll update as of 1/22/25 but as you said, at least the state deduction will not be at a shortfall with this change. I did receive an email from QB Intuit on 1/13/25 acknowledging the Emergency Rule and that they are working to get it updated and they will follow up as soon as the QB updates are available.
Our QB isn't taking out any state taxes at all on our tip checks but is on regular payroll checks. The representative is talked to was absolutely zero help.
