Hi there, @Jack 1.

Welcome and thanks for joining this thread. I'm here to help make sure that you can view your register in QuickBooks.

Just to confirm, are you using QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) for Mac? If so, I checked if there's an ongoing issue about this but there isn't currently one. To isolate this, let's run the rebuild and verify data utilities. If you haven't used tools these before, they are automated diagnostic utilities that comb through, repair, and notify you of data damage within the file.

Here's how:

1. Go to File menu, then select Utilities and Rebuild Data.
2. Choose OK. Follow the prompts to save a backup.
3. Click OK when you see Rebuild has completed.
4. Now, go back to File, then Utilities and select Verify Data this time.
5. Should the Verify find an issue with your data, you will be prompted to Rebuild Now or View Errors. Choose Close, then perform the steps below.
     a. Find QBWin.log or QuickBooks.log files.
     b. Check the log file.
     c. Scroll all the way to the bottom for the most recent Verify information.
     d. Find the line that contains the LVL_ERROR, then check Top data damage errors in QuickBooks Desktop.

For your reference, you can also check out this article for further guidance: Resolve data damage on your company file. Once done, reopen your QuickBooks company file, then go back to the Charts of Accounts and click that specific account to double-check if you can view the register.

That's it! Give this a try and please let me know how it goes or if you're referring to something else in the comment section. I'll be here should need further assistance. Take care and have a good one.

Cannot open company file

I closed out my QB program and restarted by computer.  When I try to reload QB the App starts to load and stops tells me I have a file open already and cannot open  the current file. When I look on my computer for the QB folder is not there to close and reopen.  QB then closes out the App and I am back to square 1

How can I resolve this and get back work ??

Thanks for your help

I'd be happy to help you fix this, Mike F.

This sort of error is often the result of system hang-ups which would make your company file to run as a background program. Due to this, the program would recognize it as if the file is already open.

A quick and easy way to fix this is to keep clicking OK on the error message until the update is fully complete. Once that's done, restart your computer and then reopen Quickbooks by right-clicking the QuickBooks icon and selecting Run as the Administrator. For additional insight on how to handle this error, I recommend following this article: Resolve "the file you specified cannot be opened" errors

Please know I'm always available here for all of your QuickBooks needs, I'm determined to get this fixed for you. Thanks again, wishing you a safe and relaxing weekend ahead.

Cannot open company file

I am beyond frustrated.  I cannot open company files.  I have run tools, run file doctor and have spent literally hours on phone with support staff.  I upgraded to 2020 QB at their suggestion but continue to have same issues.  Your phone support do remote access to my laptop and after 2-2.5 hours they are able to open a company file.  They consider the problem resolved but within hours or even minutes it fails again.  I need someone who can FIX the problem.  I see all your online suggestions and your team or I have tried them all.  How do I reach someone that can actually fix this?

I can get on to QBO but cannot get into my account.  I get the following message:

Shell service failed to fetch url - https://qbo.intuit.com/qbo70/v1/company/[removed]674/uibootstrap?destination=homepage

Also say Bad Gateway.

If your problem still persists, consider to purchase a 3rd party file repair service. You will only pay if they can fix it.

The error when logging in to your QBO can be caused by your browser, @tshoffner

You can clear your current browser’s cache to resolve this. Go to your account by using a private browser or an incognito window. If it works fine, clear the cache in the one that you're currently using.

Here’s how to go incognito or use a private browser:

  • For Chrome, press Ctrl + Shift + N.
  • For Internet Explorer or Firefox, press Ctrl + Shift + P.
  • For Safari, hold down Command + Shift + N.

Here's the clearing temporary internet files and cache article for detailed instructions.

You can also use other browsers like Chrome, Safari, Edge and the like if the steps above didn’t work.

Let me know if there's anything that I can help with logging in to your account. Have a wonderful day!

Cannot open company file

I created a couple of copies of my Quickbooks file because I needed to erase my computer. I restored with Time Machine, and now I can't open any of my company files. The message is:

[email address removed] has the file open in another copy of QuickBooks.

Close the company file in the other copy of QuickBooks. Then you can open it in this copy of QuickBooks.

Problem is, the user account shown no longer exists! Please help me get my file working again!

So I went to the now outdated time machine folder and dragged a slightly older version of the file to my desktop. The error message is different:

The document [file name] cannot be opened. Please unlock it and then re-try opening it.

As you can well imagine, this is a major crisis! Is there any way to get my company data back?

I’m here to help get your file working again, @civib.

We can perform some troubleshooting steps here to get your concern resolved.

Since you’ve created a couple of copies of your QuickBooks File, you’ll want to save it in the removable device. Then restore the file to your QuickBooks. I’ll show you how:

  1. On your QuickBooks Desktop, locate the copy and then click Open
  2. Press OK when prompted.
  3. Enter the name of the company file, then click Save.

You can also follow these steps below to unlock the company file:

  1. Open your Documents directory and make sure that your company file is saved in there.
  2. Select the company fill, then click File.
  3. Click Get Info then make sure the Locked checkbox is unchecked.
  4. At the bottom of the Get info window, make sure your user name has permission to read and write the file.

Once done, try to open the company file once again.

I have an article here that contains additional instructions on how to resolve issues when opening QuickBooks Desktop or your Company File.

Please keep me posted if you need more help with your company files. I’m willing to explore any possibilities. Always take care.

Thank you for responding.

I had done all your steps, to no avail.

But, thank G-d, I did get it open!

I went to a different computer where I had Quickbooks installed too, and opened the file over there. I had no trouble with it. I then quit out of Quickbooks and copied that recently opened file to my first computer. It opened without a problem. Whew!!

I still don't understand what happened, but all's well that ends well.

I'm here to help you open the company file, ray40.

You need to update QuickBooks on the latest release since the system requires it when you open the file. Check out this link to check if you have the latest available release for your version:

Now that you see latest release, here are the steps to follow on how to update QuickBooks:

  1. Close your company files and QuickBooks.
  2. Open the Windows Start menu.
  3. Search for QuickBooks Desktop. Right-click the icon and select Run as administrator.
  4. While on the No Company Open screen, go to the Help menu and select Update QuickBooks Desktop.
  5. Go to the Options tab. Select Mark All and then select Save.
  6. Go to the Update Now tab and select the Reset Update checkbox.
  7. When you're ready, select Get Updates.

When the update finishes, close and reopen QuickBooks Desktop. To install the updates, select Yes. Once done, restart your computer.

If you have a Payroll subscription, download the latest payroll tax table so you can process payroll in QuickBooks Desktop. Keep in mind, your Payroll subscription must be active.

If you move the company file to another location, you also need to update it. Check out this link for instructions and detailed steps: Upgrade your company files after switching to a new version of QuickBooks Desktop.

Let me know if there's anything else I can help you with opening a company file. I'll be right here whenever you need additional information.

What did you do earlier? Upgraded your OS, installed a new version of QBD + restoring your old file, or else?
