Join nowHello All,
With the end of Windows 7 support we are needing to convert over to a new system with Windows 10. I currently have two computers accessing QB Desktop Premiere 2018 in multi user mode. The database is currently hosted on a desktop running Windows 7 and the other computer is a laptop running Windows 10 Pro. I have another laptop running Windows 10 Pro (identical to the other laptop). As long as it meets the minimum system requirements can I move the database/server to the other laptop and use QB in multi user mode (all access and hosting on laptops)? I was told by someone that it is not advisable to host the QB database on a laptop.
Please advise.
Thank you
Hello there, @overtaxed72. I'm here to guide you through the process of switching hosting device.
You'll need to download QuickBooks Database Server Manager on the laptop to which you're switching. This lets you share your company files with other computers over your network. Here's an article that gives you the link to download the program and gives you detailed steps on the process: Install QuickBooks Database Server Manager.
Once you have the program downloaded, you'll continue by moving your company file to the new host device. Here's how:

Thank you for your reply, it will be helpful when I go to move the database to a new system. In the meantime, my primary question is can I run the database server from a laptop (no desktops in the network). The laptop meets the minimum system requirements but I was told that hosting the QB database in multi user mode was not advisable on a laptop.
Thank you for reaching back out, @overtaxed72.
I’m happy to further assist you with using QuickBooks Desktop on a laptop. There is no issue with using the laptop as the host computer, but due to it only meeting the minimum system requirements, you may notice it runs much slower than on your desktop computer. Since you will most likely use the laptop with WIFI as well, there may be some noticeable differences from a hardwired computer. If you have both a laptop and a desktop PC, and you’re the only person using QuickBooks, you only need one license. If you have more than one person accessing, then you would need to get additional licenses for all users to access QuickBooks.
To purchase additional licenses, you’ll need to do the following:
Note: If you choose to purchase additional licenses by phone, you’ll be given a phone number to call and a representative can assist you in purchasing an additional license. You may also choose to purchase additional seats over the Internet. This will direct you to the in-product e-Store to make your additional purchases.
Let me know if you have any other questions, I’ll be happy to help.
Thank you for your reply. I have 2 licenses already. I only wanted to know if there were issues hosting the QB file on a laptop (which you have addressed, thank you). I don't plan to use it wirelessly as wireless can be unstable and subject the database to corruption, both laptops will be wired to the router to prevent corruption.
Thank you for taking the time to respond.
