Hi jr112,
Thank you for joining in on the thread. I'm happy to provide an update about Internet Explorer.
QuickBooks will still need Internet Explorer even if you won't use any online services, so just keep it on your PC. The good thing for those who use online services is we've made a built-in browser in QuickBooks. They just need to run an update to add it to the software. Please refer to this article: Use our built-in browser in QuickBooks Desktop.
You can always go back to this thread if you have any other concerns with QuickBooks. Have a good one!
Make sure not to remove IE11 on your machine for the time being. Utilize the trial license for QBD to make sure it works on your machine. I am still running multi QB Desktop versions (i.e 2013-2021) on my machine to date.
This update (R10, in June) does not actually solve any issues. While the release notes say it includes the built-in browser, I am unable to open quickbooks desktop since the latest windows update did away with Internet Explorer. After yet another painful support call, it turns out that QBDT still won't open without IE even in the most current version. IE is still listed in the System Requirements for all QBDT programs including 2022. So we're up the creek until engineering actually releases a patch that makes it possible to open quickbooks on a machine without IE. Currently, support says to get your IT folks to work directly with Microsoft to load IE back on your machine, because sure, let's specially load a known security threat onto the same machine within the same program as my financially sensitive data. Which really just makes me concerned about their overall lackadaisical approach to software security. Wonder if they still have machines running XP and Vista over there.
Does this download work for IE on Windows 10?
Hello @JonMelvin,
Before we can accomplish your goal for today, may I ask for a few verifications about your inquiry upon joining this thread? Are you trying to update and install the in-product browser in QuickBooks?
Saying you need to download the internet explorer browser, are we talking about the browser application you wish to install on your computer? Or do you have any product concerns about QuickBooks?
Keep me updated in the comments below. Hope to hear from you as soon as possible. Take care and stay safe!
This problem was resolved. I was able to download IE to make QB Pro work. HOWEVER, I STILL find it incredible that such an advanced app would actually need such an obsolete browser to run!
FIX THIS!
Thanks for letting us know. WHY any software company worth their reputation would insist on using this approach is beyond me. There are literally hundreds of thousands of apps out there that don't require a browser to operate (other than to do external links). QB Pro should be no different.
Using QB for 25 years or more I have never felt like Intuit really fixes problems. Sometimes they create a work around, sometimes they just ignore their customers problems. I love the fact they didn't even plan on IE being discontinued until after it was gone.
I use QB 2015 right now and like many small businesses I don't need all the extra stuff they keep adding. I was disgusted to see they went to the annual subscription at prices that make it a "no deal" for me.
I use QB maybe 3 times a week for half an hour to create and email invoices, receive customer payments, record checks (I write to pay bills) and keep my checking account record up to date and categorize expenses. Every year I print out a profit loss statement. That's about it. So I have only upgraded when I thought my version would stop working. I never have noticed any changes to the parts of the program I use.....which is what a user wants. I realize Intuit wants to sell more product so they add bells and whistles and stop updating the products they sold.
Imagine I sold a customer an air conditioner that they had to "renew" subscription every year or it wouldn't work- well I wouldn't do that to my customers EVER.
I guess the best thing for small businesses is to go to another accounting program. I am looking at "My Bookkeeper 23" which costs $40 and comes with lifetime license.
I just hate that Intuit isn't even providing a QuickBooks Desktop product for many of us who used their software for 20 to 30 years for small service businesses-like handymen, plumbers, HVAC etc. that don't plan to pay a subscription for something that is just a simple database and don't use it for advanced payroll or cloud based services. I am ready to retire and accounting isn't my favorite chore and doesn't provide any income. Bookkeeping just provides a record for doing taxes and billing customers- so people should think about how much time and money they waste on overly updated and complex financial software- bookkeeping should always be a simple database not a three ring circus that you need to hire someone to figure out.
Like much software it never needed a "new version" just like Microsoft Office these upgrades rarely do anything but make applications less familiar and harder to use. Just fix the glitches.
A tip I have used forever is just buy all my supplies on 1 credit card and enter it once a month when I get the visa bill as category: job supplies I don't enter every receipt separately just a monthly total. I even use that Visa for my cell phone bill. It doesn't really matter which job the supplies were for. I don't see any point in figuring out the exact cost and profit on each job. I roughly know in my mind what I am making and I don't get surprised very often. A pencil and paper is the best way to estimate the costs of a job and add a little extra then walk away your done.
I tried the procedures here on Windows 11 and nothing seems to work.
Has anyone found a solution for Windows 11?
Hello there, @masteringhouse.
Let me provide information on the compatibility of QuickBooks with Windows 11.
At the moment, QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) Pro 2021 isn't certified as fully compatible with Windows 11. If you choose to run QuickBooks on an operating system that's not supported, you might run into issues while using it. Rest assured, our team is diligently working to make sure our software is compatible.
Here are the operating systems that support QBDT 2021:
To ensure the best experience when using QBDT, I recommend running it on a compatible operating system. This will ensure optimal performance and stability will all features and functions of QBDT.

Install any trial version of QB Desktop 2022-2024 on your machine. Did you encounter the same problem?
Is there a link to download a trial for QuickBooks Pro 2024? I only see one for the enterprise version.
I'm confused then. From other posts it was mentioned that there was an update to QuickBooks Pro 2021 that removed the dependency on Internet Explorer by using an internal browser developed by Inuit. If that's the case why am I getting an error message about not having it installed?
Since QBD 2022 they only offer the trial version of Enterprise. Did you encounter the same error?
Thanks for getting back to the Community, @masteringhouse. Let me chime in and provide information on the latest trial version and the system requirements for QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) 2021.
Currently, only QBDT for Enterprise and Mac Plus trial versions are available on our Support page to download. You’ll want to contact our support team for the link and instructions to set up the QBDT Pro 2024 trial.
Here are the steps to do it:
Concerning the update you mentioned about QBDT Pro 2021 that removed the dependency on Internet Explorer by using an internal browser, please know that it’s inaccurate. QBDT 2021 requires Internet Explorer for the best experience. See this guide to learn more: System requirements for QuickBooks Desktop 2021.
Additionally, here's a reference to learn what features are included in the current release and how you can use them to benefit your company: What’s new in QuickBooks Desktop 2024.

I don't get the message regarding Internet Explorer, but I can't login to view filed reports (W2s etc.) with the 2024 version of Quickbooks Desktop Pro. The window opens to login and immediately closes.
The 2024 version of Quickbooks Pro Desktop no longer seems to have the requirement for Internet Explorer, but I can't login to view my filed quarterly reports and W2s. I spoke to support and they don't have a date when this will be fixed, do you have any information regarding this bug?
Hello there, @masteringhouse.
It sounds like you're experiencing an issue viewing filed W2s in QuickBooks Desktop. It could be due to a software glitch or a specific setting.
Here are a few troubleshooting you can try:
Here's how:
See if you have the latest release available for your QuickBooks Desktop version:
QuickBooks automatically downloads updates when they become available. Once the update is downloaded, you'll see "Update available" on the status bar in the top right corner. The next step is to install the update. If you close the product and keep the system/PC switched on, the update will install automatically.
If you prefer to manually install the update, here's how:
I'm adding this article to help you print/e-file 1099 in QuickBooks Desktop: Print your 1099 and 1096 forms.
Lastly, here are articles for the year-end checklist:
Feel free to comment below if you have questions about viewing 1099 in QuickBooks Desktop. I'm always here to help. Have a great day.
Can you open the sample file on QBD 2024?
I can open the sample file and my previous company file. The issue is with opening W2s and filed reports within QB.
You need QB Desktop Payroll to integrate with your QB Desktop file to file your tax.
QB has been updated and tried other suggestions. Still the same, I try to open the window to view the filed reports and it closes before I can log in to my account.
However if I switch back to QB Pro 2021 on a Windows machine it still works. It seems like an issue with the browser being used in QB 2024.
Yes, I have that. As I mentioned this used to work on QB 2021 under Windows 10.
Login to CAMPS and make sure your license of QB Desktop 2021 and QB Desktop Payroll are active.
Yes, they are still active as well as my subscription to QB 2024.
