Recovering my account onto a new computer

My old computer died and I had the files transferred to my new computer.  How do I recover my Quickbooks?  Also, I upgraded my 2008 a few years back.  Will that update be recovered?

Which version do you have now? QB 2008?

You may try to install your QB on your new machine. Then find and copy any file of *.QBW and *.QBB to your new one and try restore it.

Or do you want to purchase QB 2020 and need to restore your data file of QB 2008?

Recovering my account onto a new computer

I'd like to share some information, Jim.

When restoring the file from a 2008 version directly to 2017, there's a possibility that the data may be damaged. It is recommended to upgrade the file in chronological order.

For example, you use the QuickBooks Desktop 2008. You can restore the file starting 2010, 2012, and up to the current version of QuickBooks Desktop.

You can reach out to our Customer Care Team to help you further with this situation.

Here are the steps:

  1. Click Help located at the top.
  2. Choose QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  3. Enter a brief description of your issue and click Continue.
  4. You can choose Message an Agent or Talk to a Specialist.

Reach out to me if you have other questions or concerns. Thanks.

If your QBB files is already updated to 2017 version, you can restore it on any supporting QBD version  (i.e 2017-2020). Download the installer file from this link

https://downloads.quickbooks.com/app/qbdt/products

If you don't have any license yet, utilize the trial license of Pro 2020

https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/new-subscriptions/download-a-trial-of-quickbooks-d...

Keep in mind, once your file is converted to 2020 version, you are unable to open it on older version anymore.

Hope it helps.

Recovering my account onto a new computer

Hi. My computer was stolen. I have a back up copy and my account shows 2018 quickbooks as active. I installed 2015 - I had a disk. The back up won’t restore. Makes sense. So do I now have to buy an upgrade? Or is there a way to get my 2018 software back? Thanks!!!

Recovering my account onto a new computer

Hi Mashamill,

That might have been so tough. I will help you get back on track.

You won't need to upgrade. You'll only need to download the QB 2018 installer and activate it using your old license number and product code. I will walk you through the steps.

To download QB 2018:

  1. Open this link: https://downloads.quickbooks.com/app/qbdt/products.
  2. Select your country, the QuickBooks product, and 2018 for the version.
  3. Click Search and click the Download button to get the installer.
  4. Run the installer after downloading it.

To get a copy of your license number, you can log in to https://camps.intuit.com/. Find QuickBooks 2018 in the Products and services lists and see the details. Here's an article for your reference: Manage your QuickBooks Desktop subscriptions and services.

After registering QuickBooks, you can restore your backup file.

If you need help along the process, shoot a reply below.

Recovering my account onto a new computer

Hello there, @Gunny79.

You can reinstall your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) account on your new computer as long as you have your product and license info available.

To get started, download your version of QBDT, here's how:

  1. Go to this link: https://downloads.quickbooks.com/app/qbdt/products.
  2. Choose US
  3. Pick YesNo, or Not sure for the multi-user mode.
  4. Hit Next.
  5. Select the product and version you want to download.
  6. Tap Search.
  7. Click Download.

When done, save the file somewhere you can easily locate.

To install, follow the below steps:

  1. Locate and open the file QuickBooks.exe you downloaded.
  2. Follow the onscreen instructions.
  3. Accept the software license agreement and then select Next.
  4. Enter your Product and License numbers.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Select on the two options for installing QuickBooks: express, or custom and network.

In case you forgot your product and license information, here's a resource for guidance on how to locate it: Find QuickBooks Desktop and Point of Sale product and license info.

Once finished with the steps above, you may now recover or restore your backup file.

  1. Go to the File menu at the top.
  2. Choose Open or Restore Company.
  3. Pick Restore a backup copy and then Next.
  4. Select Local Backup and then Next.
  5. Browse your computer for your backup company file. It should look like this: [Your company name].qbb.
  6. Select a folder to decide where to save your restored company file.
  7. Hit Open
  8. Tap Save.

For more details, take a look at this article: Restore a backup of your company file.
