My Quickbooks 2009 will not let me use it because the registration will not work. Every time I click "register now" it goes online to connect but gives me an error "Server error! 404 - File or directory not found."
One time it connected correctly, and it asked me for my phone number and area code. But, I did not remember my old original number so I went to find it. When I got back it said it timed out. Now I just get the "Server error! 404 - File or directory not found." Over, and over, and over!

By restarting the computer and opening up QuickBooks first I found it brought back the registration page where you put in your phone number and ZIP Code. So I did that, and then it still said I had to call in order to register. However, when I opened QuickBooks up again to check, it did not ask me to register again. I clicked the help pull down menu, and there was no option to register anymore.
Do you think it took the registration last time, even though it told me I had to call to register?
Hi there, RadRick01.
QuickBooks 2009 is a discontinued version of QuickBooks This is why you can no longer register it online. You will need a validation code for you to re-register the program.
Please contact our Technical Support Team so we can access your account and generate the code for you. Here's how:

The error message you received earlier, probably cause the registration notification to be delayed, Rick.
For us to make sure that your QuickBooks is registered successfully, we can press F2 on your keyboard. Then, the Product Information window will appear.
If it does show ACTIVATED or REGISTERED next to the License number, then the registration process was successful.
Otherwise, you'll want to contact our Technical Support Team to continue the registration process. You can reach them by following the steps above that JenoP provided.
We'll be right here if you need anything else.
QB 2009 reached end of life in May 2012. It won't register. 404 error = no one even lives at that web location and no one can take the contact request and this old program cannot be registered. It was never considered compatible with W8 or 10, and W7 has so many updates that it really is no longer compatible with W7, either. And worse, your data file is now 10 years behind current. Intuit has a 3-year lifecycle.
It is time to buy QB 2019, and ask Intuit if they will update that old file for you.
It does say registered. It must have done it OK online by itself. That is good. I will buy the newer ver. when I have the money!
Thanks for your help.
HELP!!!!
I cannot get it to register. I even uninstalled the software and reinstalled it. When it comes to the Register screen, it says "Timed out." or some such nonsense! It says "Register by phone" but there is no phone number to call and that prompt does not produce another screen.
I have used QuickBooks for YEARS!! I cannot handle this next edition!!

Ran into this problem. I own an old (2009) version of Quickbooks Mac. Old computer. Simple standalone setup, I don't need anything other than what I had. I had a hard drive issue and had to re-install my OS and reinstalled the Quickbooks, which I did from my original retail CD that I purchased and physically own along with the box, documentation and CD key. Of course it would not register. I spent half a day on the phone with tech support and they somehow convinced me to buy Quickbooks Online, which is completely unusable for what I need to do.
I just want to use the software THAT I PURCHASED AND LEGALLY OWN. It is absolutely CRIMINAL to lock someone out of retail software that they physically own. I smell class-action lawsuit ...
Hi @baritalia,
I understand that you want to use the 2009 version of QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) for Mac. And I'd like to route this concern to the best support who can help you further.
As mentioned by my colleagues and @qbteachmt above, QBDT for Mac 2009 version is no longer supported.
Most of the unsupported license doesn't have any records. But to check if there are still records of the license number you've purchased, I encourage contacting our Technical Support Team. I understand that you've already contacted them before but they're the best support group who can help you further.

I am trying to register my QB and it tells me my phone number is invalid. When I call on phone help it recognizes my phone number???? A little straight forward help would be appreciated.
Thank you for sharing your concern in the QuickBooks Community, @Paris72.
There might be something that went wrong during the installation of QuickBooks on your computer. This can be the reason why you're getting an error message that you're phone number is invalid.
To clear out the issue, let's run the QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool. This can help us verify and fix some minor install issues in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).
Here's how:
If the solutions above didn't fix the problem, perform a clean install of QuickBooks. Doing this action, won't affect your company data file and everything it holds.
If the issue persists, I'd recommend reaching out to our phone specialist. This way, they can verify your phone number and help you in activating QuickBooks.

I am trying to register my product and to verify registration is asking for Zip/Postal code my postal code entered is not recognized...what do I do??
Hello there, MKI1.
When you register for QuickBooks Desktop, you'll need to get a code from our specialist. This code is for validation when you register your product. Your address and postal code should be matched to recognize them in the system.
If you haven't contacted our support team, I recommend you to call our phone support team for further assistance. They can provide you the validation code and help you with the Postal code. Here's how:
Just in case you're using QuickBooks Online, make sure you signed up for the correct region. The region of your QuickBooks account and postal code should be matched.
If you'd like to use the Postal Code option you have right now, you'll have to register and sign up for the right QBO version. Visit this link and scroll down to select the right country for you by clicking the drop-down arrow.

I am trying to install Simple start 2009 on a new computer. It is ok on the previous computer. I have my licence number from my account but it keeps getting rejected.
What can I do ?
QBD 2009 is outdated and I am not sure Support will help to activate it. Consider upgrading your data to the recent versions. You can still purchase a one time license for QBD 2021 to lower your expense.
