BANK DOWNLOADS ACCOUNT QBO file - TURNS INTO OFX file. Won't open or download into QB DESKTOP PRO 2020?

On my Windows 10 laptop, When Importing or using Web Connect Download from Bank (Bank shows downloading a Quickbooks QBO file).  Why once it is downloaded, does the file become an OFX file I try to open the OFX file in my new QB Desktop 2020 and the result is "No new transactions available" response in QB. This is extremely frustrating.  The bank guarantees that it's download is providing a QBO file to me and the bank has had NO COMPLAINTS from thousands of customers using their Account Downloads system (selecting bank's Quickbooks QBO file option).  I've tried both Chrome and Internet Explorer 11 browsers to open the Bank's website and download the account file - but once it is downloaded, it somehow turns into an OFX file.  When I click the final SEARCH button in the Bank's account download file section there is a

YELLOW BOX asking "Do you want to open or save Export.qbo (836 bytes) from imanage.ebanking-services.com?  The options are OPEN;  SAVE; or (OPEN & SAVE).  EITHER WAY, once the file downloads from the Banks' website, it turns into an OFX file!!!!  I have tried all options with this file: (1) OPEN - QB asks "Import new transactions now" or  "Save transactions to a file" BOTH OF THESE QB OPTIONS -QB Pop-Up says the same "No new transactions available";  (2) SAVE - Save on Desktop; then open in QB (using correct matching bank account) result in the same QB Pop-up "No new transactions available" response in QB.  HOW DO I GET THE BANK DOWNLOAD TO  STAY A QBO FILE SO IT CAN WORK WITH QUICKBOOKS DESKTOP PRO 2020?

I would feel the same way if I were in your situation, GK07.

I know that you've been through a lot, so let's go straight to your option so you can upload your transactions.

What you can do with your QFX file is convert it to QBO. I saw some posters that shared links about converters. You can use them at your discretion.

Here are the links to their posts:

On the other hand, I acknowledge the fact that your bank's support guarantees you that you will get a QBO file using the steps you mentioned. However, I think they need to check this out since you ended up getting a QFX file instead of QBO. We have no control over this behavior because this is done on your bank's platform. Have you tried connecting your account instead?

Your next step is to add or match your transactions.

If you have any other questions about bank feeds, please let us know.

@Corki

Have you tried to rename the extension of the downloaded file from .qfx to .qbo? You may also explore this converter app as a workaround.

Hello, @Corki. Thanks for reaching out and bringing this to our attention.

As mentioned by my colleague @JessT, we have no control over how your bank converts the file as it's thru your bank's platform. Thus, I recommend contacting your financial institution so they can further check it on their end.

You may also consider checking the converters provided above by @JessT to help you convert the file.

In case you encounter any Web Connect import errors along the way, you can use this article to resolve them: Fix Web Connect import errors.

Feel at ease to comment back below if you have some follow-up questions about handling your transactions in QuickBooks. I'll be here to lend a hand.

BANK DOWNLOADS ACCOUNT QBO file - TURNS INTO OFX file. Won't open or download into QB DESKTOP PRO 2020?

I've contacted the bank and they say everything looks great on their end, even thought the file is converted on their end.

Direct web connect doesn't work, it crashes the program (QB crashes) whether I try to connect directly or upload the OFX.

I ran a file rebuild, program troubleshooting etc and nothing works.

I've thought about upgrading but I refuse to go to a subscription model. I have no option to upgrade to just 2019 even.

It's all so sketchy and ridiculously time consuming for something that's supposed to save time.

Thanks for getting back to us here, @Corki.

I have some information about QuickBooks is crashing after converting your QBO file. You'll want to run our QuickBooks File Doctor tool. It fixes issues related to crashing programs.

Here's how to do it:

  1. Close QuickBooks.
  2. Download the QuickBooks Tool Hub. Save the file somewhere you can easily find it.
  3. Open the file you downloaded (QuickBooksToolHub.exe). Follow the on-screen steps to install and agree to the terms and conditions.
  4. When the install finishes, double-click the icon on your Windows desktop to open the tool hub.
  5. From the launch pad, tap the Company File Issues. This will open the QuickBooks File Doctor tool.

After running the tool, restart your computer and try uploading your file again. Check out this guide for more information about the tool hub: Fix common problems and errors with the QuickBooks Desktop Tool Hub.

In case you need help with other tasks in QBDT, browse this link to go to our general topics with articles. You'll find related topics with steps that'll help you along the way.

Let me know if you still have questions or concerns with bank transactions. I'm more than happy to assist you. Take care and stay safe.

BANK DOWNLOADS ACCOUNT QBO file - TURNS INTO OFX file. Won't open or download into QB DESKTOP PRO 2020?

Ran the file doctor and nothing changed.

Ran the downloaded files through a converter and nothing changed.

When I look at the properties of the downloaded files they show as "QBO to OFX" files.

I am flummoxed.

Hi Corki.

I understand that you need to bring in the bank transactions to QuickBooks Desktop.

QuickBooks Desktop only supports QBO files. You'll want to visit the QuickBooks Desktop Apps Store. From there, you'll see all the supported third-party apps including file converters that you can use.

Also, make sure that your QuickBooks Desktop is updated. If you're using a non-supported version, online banking or direct connect won't work which could be the reason why it crashes when you try to link your bank.

If you're unable to convert the file using a third-party converter, you'll want to manually do it. Download again the file from your bank and open it to review the content. Then, make sure to save it again as a QBO file. For the detailed steps, please check this link and proceed to Solution 5Message: "No new transactions" when importing web connect file.

Post again here if you have more questions. We'll respond as soon as we can.

@Corki

Utilize the trial license of QBD 2021 to upgrade your file and run the bank feeds. If the same error persists, contact Support and ask Data Service to check the file. Otherwise you have to purchase a 3rd party file repair service.

You may purchase a one time license of QBD 2021 Pro for 1 user worth $399 or Premier for 1 user worth $499

I don't see anything on that app site for a file converter.

As well connecting directly to my bank works fine with one company file - shouldn't it work with the other? It's the same bank, just different accounts being accessed.

The bank blames QB, so please don't tell me to talk to the bank for the third time.

I think I already said I did contact them and they won't provide support. They say I have to upgrade to a subscription to get any support at all. And that's not going to happen.

@Corki

RE: I have the same issue, the QBO file is converted to an OFX file but I get an error message and then it crashes the program.

How are you determining this is the case, that the file is 'converted' (??) to an OFX file?

For example, are you relying on the file's extension? Or perhaps Windows description of the file type?

I ask because:

- Importing an actual OFX file into QuickBooks desktop will normally just result in QuickBooks refusing to process it and putting up an error message saying it's not the right type of file or that the Financial Institution is not valid.

- When importing a Web Connect file into QuickBooks, the file filter is set for "Web Connect Files (*.qbo)", which is the only option, and so normally it would be hard to even see an *.ofx file.

I see that it has been several months since you had this issue. I ran into this issue for a few of the banks my clients work with. I found this to be the quickest and easiest way to convert an .ofx file to a .qbo file without having to use a third party app.

No, it's happening to me as well.  I am using QB Pro, desktop 2019.  Have you found a hassle free solution that does not require you to purchase something or do an upgrade?

BANK DOWNLOADS ACCOUNT QBO file - TURNS INTO OFX file. Won't open or download into QB DESKTOP PRO 2020?

How do you convert this?  I am having the exact same issue.  I just gave my bank my log in informaiton so they could download.  It's a QBO file and downloads as that, but when I go to open it the file link says OFX.  Why does it change it?  Has to be a PC setting.  Would love if I could just convert.

Thank you!

We definitely want to make sure that you get your file imported and categorize your transactions, mhodapp.

QuickBooks totally depends on the data that's been shared by your bank. If you believe that it's a pc settings issue, you'll want to reach out to your computer's technical support team. They might be able to take a look at your computer and check what's causing the automatic conversion.

You can also follow the same recommendations to look for an online converter that can get the file back to a QBO format.

I the meantime, let me give you these articles that can serve as an additional guide when working in the Bank Feeds section:
