I keep getting error 15106 whenever I try to update my QuickBooks desktop. I have not been able to update since 2-12-2020. Today I went through all of the steps except reinstalling (and that's because I have multiple company files that I would need to backup and then open again after an uninstall/reinstall).
I have disabled my antivirus software. I also disabled the Windows Defender firewall. I also went into Components in the Intuit program file and renamed DownloadQB28.old.
I am still getting the error message "[Error 15106] The update program can not be opened."
Any other ideas?
Thank you for providing the detailed information about your concern, @horseshowmgr.
Here are the two possible reasons for getting this error when updating the program:
You're right in disabling the antivirus software. Then, you'll need to right-click on the QuickBooks Desktop icon, then select Run as Administrator. This will change your access to an administrator.
If you get the same error code, I'd recommend turning off the User Account Control (UAC). Doing so may help pinpoint the problem and relieve the issue.
Let me know in the comment section if you need further assistance. Have a good one.
Ended up doing both steps and am still getting the error message. I did look back and in mid February just after my last update I uninstalled a program and started having a lot of Registry Editor errors. I managed to fix them after a lot of workarounds with Microsoft & Adobe and then I fixed any other program issues with deleting some stuff in the registry after a Google search. Could this error have anything to do with the Registry Editor files? Microsoft did something back then to get my QuickBooks to work. If this could be that problem, is my only fix going to be a complete uninstall & reinstall of QB desktop?

Hello there, horseshowmgr.
Yes, we can uninstall and reinstall the latest QuickBooks desktop. Before anything else, let's save all our QuickBooks product info since we'll need it when we install the product again. If there are information that we lack we can always visit out Account Management Portal (CAMPS).
For the detailed process please look into this article: Clean install QuickBooks Desktop.

I've had the same issue since 11/2019 To date I have removed any lingering anti virus software and disabled my current anti virus (ESET) but still am unable to get the updates. This is a problem since I'm working from home now I've had multiple conversations with Intuit and other IT professionals and no one can seem to fix this issue. I have this problem on 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020
Hello, @KimB58.
I appreciate you removing your antivirus application to resolve this error. Did you also attempt to uninstall/install QuickBooks in Selective startup? If not, you can switch to this mode before doing the clean install.
However, it'd be best to consult a Windows expert before you do this task. Also, you'll need to create a backup of your company file and keep a copy of your product and license info before you start.
You can check this article for the detailed steps: Install or uninstall QuickBooks in Selective startup.
Keep me posted on how it goes. I want to ensure you'll be able to fix this in no time. I'll be around if you have follow-up questions or concerns.

We work on a two person network, so mostly stay in multi-user mode. I'm the admin and the company file is on my computer, the other person accesses from her desk. She left work on Friday and everything was as usual. She started entering vendor bills this morning (Monday) and a popup said "Unrecoverable Error Code: 15806 58110.
Everything I can find online says this is related to a payroll update issue. All updates have always been done by me. She doesn’t even have access to payroll, and was not updating anything when this happened. Other than QB kicking her out from time to time we've not had too many issues.
What now?
Good afternoon, @AmericanRV.
