Same identical issue! I spend 6.5 hours on tech support help and NOTHING (after two days of my own attempts to fix the issue). I finally found this thread that describes my issue to a tee. I too attempted the bank feed after the cutoff. I really hate to try and recreate all of the invoices in June after that from my backup.
I rotate between the unrecoverable errors during the upgrade of the company file and then after using the file doctor tool end up with the "user admin is not recognized"
FIGURED I WOULD PROVIDE MY FIX AFTER 1.5 HRS OF TRYING THINGS, I DISABLED ALL BANK FEEDS FROM MY BANK/CC ACCOUNTS, THEN IT WORKED FINALLY.
Worked for me to disable all bank feed connections to my bank/credit card accounts. Otherwise i tried everything. Finnally able to upgrade to 2020 after 3 hrs.
thanks for the suggestion. still will not upgrade my company file when restoring the backup from 2017.
Any specific error message?
but then why does the data file work just fine in the old version?
so you go back to QB 2017 and disable the bank feeds? Where do you do that at in 2017?
thank you for this feed. I have spent the entire day doing all of the same things. Thought I was going crazy.
Very frustrating. I will now go try the 2019 trial and reinstall of 2020
or the option was to go back to QB 2017 and remove all bank feeds and then save the company file back it up and then reinstall 2020 and try again?
I hope I have that right because here goes another hour or two of my life!
I know this wasn't an easy process for you, @expvideo.
Thanks for joining the thread and raising your concern here. I've got some info and steps to help ensure you can update your company file from QuickBooks Desktop 2017 to the 2020 version.
Yes, you're correct. The normal process of updating the file is to save a backup copy from the lower version (QBDT 2017) and restore the data on the higher version (2020). Then, update it once ready. Please refer to Step 3 of this resource for the steps.
Since doing them don't work, we can perform the steps suggested by tdlawncare and dabs56. Just do the same steps above, however, this time, we'll need to disable your bank feeds before saving a backup copy. Here's how:
Also, you may run the QuickBooks Tool Hub to fix common QBDT problems and errors.

thanks for the responses I tried it all and wasted several more hours.
I just submitted my return for 2020 through my quickbooks account.
I am hopeful you will refund my money in total quickly and let me know when you get your software fixed.
I think I will look for other options or use 2017 and key in my data.
THIS!!!!! It worked - THANK YOU for sharing your solution!!!!!
I have the same issue just with upgrading from 2017. my file is already upgraded to the 2020 version, the only issue is that when I import bank transactions I continue to get this fatal error message. It is clear that Intuit corrupted this file since the issue started after I imported transactions in the 2017 version, after they stopped supporting online services. Intuit distorted information in order that the bank feed should be messed up, which corrupted the file.
I'm having the same problem. Updated to QB Pro Desktop 2020 and it's all error codes all the time trying to upgrade company file from QB 2017. Par for the course with Intuit. Most of these kinds of errors I've resolved one way or another through some labyrinthine circuitous route of online google searching and subsequent multi-step combination of updating, rebooting, reinstalling and praying. Don't even bother with calling anyone. It's you and google and other expert users hashing it out behind the scenes.
The only way I could get it to work this time was to open a backup from an earlier version of my company file dating from March of 2019. So now it's redo time for the last 1.5 years. Oh well, another days work and it'll be up and running with any luck. God why is this program so incompetent?
UPDATE - went back for one more last ditch effort and realized the bank feeds in 2017 were not completely disabled as I had thought. I had transactions remaining to clear and once I did that the last account feed was disabled. I created another backup and FINALLY the backup file successfully upgraded and I can use 2020.
Note to Quickbooks admin that might monitor this thread - IT SHOULD NOT BE THIS HARD AND I SHOULD NOT HAVE WASTED OVER 8 HOURS ON SUPPORT VIA YOUR CHAT LINE!!!! I have spend at least 10 other hours creating files, fixing files and attempting to upgrade. You clearly have an issue that your developers should be reviewing and FIX. At the very least add this recommendation to your chat playbook/frequently asked questions, etc. This should be the first thing anyone that can't upgrade should try.
I found a solution, I used the file doctor in the original year, in my case I was updating a 2016 file, it took a couple of runs with the file doctor but i finally got the file to open. Removed the bank feeds, made a backup, and then restored the backup with 2020.
I had to repair in the original year 1st and remove the feeds, then update the file and it worked.
Try fixing the file in 2016 with the file doctor, disable the bank feeds, backup and then restore in 2020.
I have that error code every time I try to do a WebConnect so I cannot link my bank data. I've been entering everything manually. I tried uninstalling, repairing, to no avail.
Let me help get rid of the error when using a Web Connector, ihh.
The error that you’re getting has several triggers and requires a couple of steps to resolve. We need to make sure that your QuickBooks is up to date and update Internet Explorer to the latest version.
You can also browse this link: Set up QuickBooks Web Connector to use a different versions.
On the other hand, let's isolate the issue on your Bank Feeds. You can download the Web Connect file directly from your bank, not from inside QuickBooks.
If you can import and see your transactions in QuickBooks, follow the steps to reset your bank connection.
If you see an error when you download or import the file, there may be an issue with your bank. Reach out to your bank for help.
If your bank changes how they support QuickBooks Desktop, they'll notify you. Sign in to your bank's website and check your messages. When there are any messages about changes, follow the instructions.
If your bank stopped supporting Web Connect, follow the steps to disconnect your account.
You can also check if the issue is with your company file or the .qbo file. See if you can import your transactions into a new company file.
If you see your transactions on the test file, there may be a settings issue. Go back to your original company file and reset them. Simply disconnect the account you're having problems with, then reconnect the account.
Once you reconnect, import the .qbo file again. If you're still getting the same error, I recommend contacting our QuickBooks Live Support Team. They can create a case to isolate and find a permanent fix.
Let me know how everything turns out by commenting below. I'll get back to you and provide the information you need.
There's no way to import anything, not directly not with a QBO file. It always crashes. I also updated from 2016 to 2020. When I do try to import the QBO, the accounts don't even show up to choose from. I don't see how you can help.
Hello again, ihh.
Thanks for getting back and keeping us updated.
I have other troubleshooting steps to help you get back on track. In this case, let's use the QuickBooks File Doctor to help fix company file issues in QuickBooks Desktop.
To start, download the most recent version (1.4.0.0) of the QuickBooks Tool Hub. Here's how:
Once done, run the Quick Fix my File feature to resolve this matter accordingly.
If the issue persists, continue to Step 3 in this article: Fix company file and network issues with QuickBooks File Doctor.
I'm also adding this link to learn more about the different methods in fixing minor data issues with your company file: Fix data damage on your QuickBooks Desktop company file.
Keep in touch if you have any other QuickBooks questions, I'm just a post away to help.
Utilize the trial license of this converter app to isolate the issue. If the same issue persists, your company file may be corrupted. Run the Verify/Rebuild Data utility as the first step.

I tried to ToolHub and it didn't find any errors.
Hello, ihh.
I appreciate your time doing all you can to resolve the Web Connect import issue.
This might be caused by a damaged program component. In this case, you'll want to repair QuickBooks Desktop.
Here's how:
Also, you can check out other solutions to fix the import issue here: Fix Web Connect import errors.
After doing all the steps, import your Web Connect file again to QuickBooks.
When you have all the transactions in, start adding or matching them to your books.
I'm all ears if you have other concerns regarding QuickBooks Desktop. You're welcome to start a new thread for your questions. I'll be right there with you.
I constantly get the same error message when trying to download a qbo file.
I am a CPA and work in multiple clients files and this is extremely frustrating.
works with some Client's QB's and doesn't work with others.
Getting Intuit help on the phone is no better. Takes hours and often you get no where.
Intuit has cornered the market and is no longer user friendly.
