I am a very basic single employee consultant. I choose Quickbooks Desktop years ago given the time feature to track my client time and create invoicing. I've been renewing QB versions each year and now have the 2024 version which is up for renewal (at another price increase) soon. I don't link in any external services like the payroll service and easily download my bank information manually. Do I have to pay to upgrade to the 2025 version on the renewal date or can I continue using my 2024 version?

I do not want to pay to upgrade or renew my 2024 desktop version for next year. I want to use it as I have been using it past the "renew" date in September. Can I do this?
No. If you don't pay the renewal fee, you will be in read-only mode for 1 year before they lock you out. You can use the trial version as a workaround.
If I can't - is there another alternative to avoid the $649 charge?
You can ask a reputable partner to change your payment method as a workaround to ensure they won't charge your card in the future.
Yes, you can continue to renew your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) 2024 subscription, SCase. I can lay out more information about this.
QBDT version's life cycle is three years. That said, the 2024 version is still supported until 2027, and as an existing user, you can still renew it and choose not to upgrade to the 2025 plan. While the 2025 version is soon to be released, it's still up to you if you want to switch to the latest version.
Not deciding to upgrade to 2025 will not impact your usage of QBDT 2024, and you'll still receive support and product security/security updates till 2027. These go along with the features that require internet access.
Since QBDT 2024 is a subscription-based version, you must renew it on your scheduled renewal date to continue accessing your company file. If you opt not to renew your subscription, you'll have view-only access for a year after the expiration of your subscription. Beyond that, you can no longer access or manage your QBDT company.
For more information, refer to this link: Renew your subscription or use view-only mode in QuickBooks Desktop.
Finally, once you've decided to upgrade your QBDT company to 2025 sometime in the future, this article could guide you through the process: Upgrade QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus, Premier Plus, or Enterprise.

If you don't need to run any add-ons (e.g QB Payroll, QB Payment), you can use the trial version for good as a workaround.
How do I not new my subscription but not update to 2025 - while making sure I continue to have access? I tried to simply delete my credit card and intuit won't let me do this. Thank you for your help.
You can ask a partner to change your payment method to ensure your card will not be charged on the renewal date.
I'm participating in this discussion to assist you with your inquiry regarding the non-renewal of your QuickBooks subscription, SCase135.
If you choose not to renew your subscription, you can update your billing information to dummy details in the Customer Account Management Portal. This way, the system won't automatically charge your card. Here's how:
Note that you'll be unable to manage your company if you choose not to renew your subscription. You'll only have view-only access a 1 year after your subscription ends. After that, you'll be locked out.
While your company file is still on your computer, reactivating the subscription will be necessary to manage and modify your company data. It is advisable to export your data, save a backup, or create a portable company file from QuickBooks Desktop and store it on a flash drive or an external hard drive. This way, you can restore it using a trial version as a workaround.
To better understand how to enter view-only mode following the expiration of your subscription or if you choose to cancel it, you may refer to this article for assistance: Renew your subscription or use view-only mode in QuickBooks Desktop.

I feel like I am not asking the right question given the responses to date. I do not understand your responses. Let me be as clear as I know how.
I do not want to pay to upgrade or renew my 2024 desktop version for next year. I want to use it as I have been using it past the "renew" date in September. Can I do this? I do not want to convert to the On-Line version of Quickbooks which has been the focus of any conversation - much to my frustration.
If I can - what do I do to turn off the automatic charge? If I can't - is there another alternative to avoid the $649 charge?
We're sad to see you go, @SCase135. Let me provide the information you need to discontinue the QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) subscription.
Before anything else, please know we have cancelation policies you'll need to familiarize. This will help you identify what actions to take after canceling the subscription, including the terms and conditions. Moreover, once you reach your pay period and decide not to pay for renewal, your QBDT will remain on View-only access for a year.
While your license is inactive, you won’t be able to edit your data. However, you can renew your subscription or export your data.
Also, QuickBooks plans to stop selling versions to new subscribers in the US. You can check the link for detailed information: Can't buy QuickBooks Desktop as a new US subscriber.
Please don't hesitate to let me know if you have further questions about your QBDT subscription. I'm always available to assist.

I'm here to provide answers/information to your questions about not renewing your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) subscription, @Thassell.
QuickBooks Desktop 2024 is subscription-based. That said, you need to renew your subscription to continue using it.
If you decide not to renew the subscription, you will have a view-only mode for a year.
This feature is available in QBDT for Windows 2023 R3 and newer.
You will have the ability to view reports. However, you are not permitted to create any transactions. It is advisable to export your data before canceling your subscription.
Here is an article you can read about using the view-only mode: Renew your subscription or use view-only mode in QuickBooks Desktop.
I'm also adding this link where you can check common questions about renewing your QBDT subscription: QuickBooks Desktop to stop selling to new U.S. subscribers.
If there’s anything else you would like to discuss, or if you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I'm always here to help. Have a great day.
Well, the online program is awful and Enterprise is way to expensive and I don't expect the price will go down, we area small business with not alot of cash flow. What will happen in 2027 when Desktop completely goes away, are we just going to lose QB completely? QB has always been so supportive of small businesses, its so disappointing

You can use the trial version as a workaround to access historical data for good.

There's still a chance they'll change their minds. QB Desktop 2016 for Mac and QB Desktop 2019 for Mac are one example.
Ok, so will we still be able to use it as a standalone without support or payroll
One of my clients is still running QB Desktop 2006 on Win 11 Home with minor but acceptable issues.
