QuickBooks requires Internet Explorer

Since Microsoft is cancelling their support of Internet Explorer, and recommend using Edge as your browser, our business has uninstalled the program on our PCs. Now when i try to open QuickBooks 2019 or 2018 for Accountants I receive the following error message:

Internet Explorer is turned off in your copy of Windows, but QuickBooks needs it to work properly. Please turn on Internet Explorer. You can find out how to do this on Windows support site.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/support

How can I use Edge as my browser for QuickBooks instead of Internet Explorer? Especially when I cannot even open QuickBooks to change the settings? Please help!

For the time being, reinstall IE on your Win 8.1 or 10

https:// support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4026136/windows-10-use-internet-explorer

Hopefully company may release a major update for any supporting version at the release date of QB 2021 later to support Edge.

I have the 2020 desktop version and I just updated IE (I hate it so I use chrome) but I am still getting the same error message.  Additionally, I turned off all my firewalls.  If I understand correctly, it won't work until there is an upgrade from QB? I cannot even open my software for the first time.  Super annoying.

Hello there, QV-Arthington.

Thanks for sharing the steps you've taken so far to try fixing the error.

Every version of QuickBooks has its corresponding system requirements. For QuickBooks Desktop 2020 (latest version), it requires an Internet Explorer 11 as your browser. Since it's an updated software, it should work with an updated browser to be able to run QuickBooks seamlessly.

Feel free to visit this link to upgrade your browser.

Here's an article where you find out more about QuickBooks Desktop 2020 system requirements which includes the supported Operating System, Database Servers, Browser Requirements and more: System requirements for QuickBooks Desktop 2020 and Enterprise Solutions 20.0.

If you've tried the solutions above to no avail, it would be best to reach out to our QuickBooks Care Support. They have the tools to conduct a thorough investigation for a complete resolution.

Here are the steps to contact support:

  1. Click Help at the top menu and select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  2. In the Have a Question? window, enter a topic.
  3. Click Contact us.
  4. Hit the Stat Messaging button.

Please take note our operating hours for chat support depends on the version of QuickBooks that you're using. Please see this article for more details: Support hours and types.

Keep me posted for additional questions or other concerns. I'd be more than happy to help. Wishing you the best of luck.

QB- Can you not add an update that will allow other browsers?  Companies are disabling Internet Explorer as recommended.  The Department of Homeland Security , the IRS, and others warn not to use it and Microsoft will not be supporting it.

I do not think that the recommendation from QB should be to re-enable that browser, but for QB to accommodate it's clients based on the latest recommendations for safety and security of our data.

What's the plan?

Hi there, Juls64.

Being able to use other browsers aside from Internet Explorer (IE) has already been forwarded to our Product Team. But, we haven't received any updates about this feature.

For now, you'll want to keep IE as the browser when using QuickBooks Desktop. You can refer to this page, Upgrade Internet Explorer to open QuickBooks Desktop in case you're having issues with the IE.

Stay tuned with the latest features and improvements by visiting this link: Firm of the Future. It's the website where our Product Team posts any updates about QuickBooks.

Let me know if you need anything else, and I'm always right here to provide the information you need.

How can we apply your solution if quicbooks desktop will not even open?!?!
Two days ago, I closed a functional quickbooks program and when I tried to open it today, I get the attached error message. Once you click OK it shuts down and does not open.
How on earth can the software coding be written in a way that requires and antiquated, obsolete program!?!
Like many others, I have not used IE since the late 90's ... and I have owned this computer for 10 months and I have NEVER had IE enabled.
Possibly a Windows update removed it?! It is not in Windows Features, it is not in Programs...I do not have IE, only Microsoft Edge which is also never used. It is not on this computer.
When calling Microsoft  Support we're told to contact QuickBooks ... but when contacting QuickBooks Support we're told this is a problem with Windows. However, if we want to pay for a Support Subscription they will happily assist. Yep...for real!!
The title on the error message clearly states "QuickBooks has a problem". Well, that is the understatement of the decade!
That title should probably be changed to "QuickBooks has ANOTHER problem"

@SpartanOffroad

Our team don't like using IE or Edge either but we have no choice once we are using QB Desktop. On Win 8.1, MSFT has replaced IE on the screen with Edge but they are not disable it on system. You have to check your system to make sure it is enabled. In our experience during this year, we didn't find any issue when installing QBD 2020 on any pre-loaded Win 10 system even on Win 10 Home edition.

my suspicion is that Intuit won't bother to remove the Internet Explorer requirement.  As it took them years to finally move from needing users to be administrators on their own machines in order to run QB, I've yet to find QB ever really concerning themselves with security issues.  I would not be at all surprised to see them require users to move to QB online and discontinue desktop versions entirely.

We have to wait until MSFT discontinued support for Win 8.1. Frankly, we prefer running QBD on Win 8.1 than Win 10.

Help please - the WHOLE POINT of having quickbooks desktop is that it DOES not require an internet connection. Now it won't let me install since I don't have internet explorer. We use chrome or edge as a business and want this on a computer where there is NO internet. Anyone have ideas? This isn't 1983 but it isn't supposed to require an internet connection to run a desktop software - we don't want stuff saved on the cloud and shouldn't need IE or internet. If I do a whole bunch of changes to get it on a computer with internet, it's not going to have IE. Any work arounds or ideas? Hating the no support side of quick books. Would happily pay more for a live person to help when needed. Thanks community - hope you have some ideas!

Thank you for the note but disappointed there's no resolution. Phone and chat services aren't available now and I find it hard to believe that a desktop version requires internet....and with that, a specific internet browser. If we wanted to be online, we'd use that version or option. There must be a different way. Even more bummed we're unable to return the product so we're now out $200 with no solution, no product that can be used and hours wasted.

@tiredofzeroanswers16

Do you need to install QBD 2021 on Win 10, or else? Last week we were still able to install multiple QBD on Win 10 v1909 at our clients. Make sure you enabled the IE browser. A supporting QBD version needs an internet connection to activate your installation.

Thanks for the note. The whole point of buying desktop is to put it somewhere there isn't internet. The computer that's a far distant 2nd choice to use has edge only and isn't going to have IE on it. I'm frustrated bc it should be called desktop-but-really-online-only if it requires IE. IE is in the past for many computers. Thanks for you sharing your experience.

I just installed QB Desktop 2021 and sure enough, IE 11 is still required.  This thread, or others like it are predominate in this forum.  I find it ridiculous that a "software team" that is supposed to design applications to customer requirements, and provide appropriate security cannot make the simple design change to allow another browser rather than an obsolete, unsecure browser.  In today's world where big companies are being hacked, unsecure software is the primary target.

Intuit, get out of the rut you have been in for years and allow any browser.  In the meantime, while I wait, I'll download my multiple bank accounts manually.   Perhaps, Intuit should be refunding me for my time doing the work the software should be doing.

I just started having this issue a few days ago and have done A LOT of research and tried many things to try to fix it.  I finally found instructions in Microsoft forums to get IE back on my computer that worked!  I have posted instruction below, and I hope it helps others who are having this same aggravating problem!

If IE is missing completely, try this.

Click on Start then Settings. Go to Apps | Apps and Features. If you don't see Internet Explorer, click on Manage Optional Features then Add A Feature. You should be able to add or enable it. Restart your computer when done so it takes effect.

So I am trying to connect a bank account to a new company but after going to "Banking"  then "BankFeeds and then "Setup Bank Feed for an Account" I am able to find the bank but when trying to sync the account to QB it tells me the bank no longer supports Internet Explorer. Other than entering the bank account info manually, what are my options?

Hi there, RexV.

I'd be glad to share another option with you. If your bank provides a .QBO file of you banking transactions, you can download them from their website. Then, import them in QuickBooks. Here's how:

  1. Open a web browser and go to your bank’s website.
  2. Sign in to your bank account following the normal process that you usually do.
  3. Download your transactions as a QuickBooks Web Connect (.qbo) file.

After getting a copy, follow these steps on how to import it in your company file:

  1. Go to the Banking menu, select Bank Feeds, and then click Import Web Connect Files.
  2. Look for the QBO file you saved, then select Open.
  3. When prompted to select a bank account, select:
    • Use an existing QuickBooks account if the account you're importing transactions into is already set up in QuickBooks.
    • Create a new QuickBooks account if the account you're importing transactions into isn't in QuickBooks yet. Learn how to create an account.
  4. Click Continue. You'll see a dialogue box telling you that the data has been successfully read into QuickBooks.
  5. Select OK.

Once done, use this article as a guide on how to match and add categories: Add And Match Bank Feed Transactions In QuickBooks Desktop

Thanks, I knew that from all of the other posts on this subject.

The point is, Internet Explorer is no longer supported for security.  QUICKBOOKS NEEDS TO STOP USING IT!

If your bank supports SlickConnect, explore it as a workaround.

Just WOW!  This internet explorer issue needs to be disclosed as a fundamental product FLAW!!  If I am not able to use this product with CHROME or join the 21st century with my accounting system, then it needs to be disclosed with the advertising for sales!!  I have used this product for YEARS (about 20)!!  Now I have purchased Desktop Pro 2021 and CAN'T use it because I can't create an intuit account and can't open my product because my NEW computer does not support and I will NOT use internet explorer!  I am NOT going to jump through all the hoops that have been suggested to all the other folks on the thread to do business.  I need to have this product work for me.  Not me work for IT!  I am so at a loss after reading the thread on this problem, I don't even know what to do.  They need to KNOW that I will tell everyone I KNOW about this problem and hope that there is another solution for them to NOT purchase this program.  I may have to be a fool and figure out what to do with wasting $200, but if I can save someone else that money, I WILL!!!  Social media will take care of this problem!!

It is actually now impossible to install Explorer 11 on newly configured computers using Windows 10 Pro.

Therefore, impossible to use QuickBook Desktop on these devices.
