Found on the web the recommendation to remove your .tlg file. It should reset when running a back up. Seems mine never did and grew to 11.6gb... you can delete it without problems, I did, not seeing a significant improvement on speed, but still 12gb of useless file is quite some space we can use for other stuff. Run the back up first, the tlg file can help restoring corrupted data, after back up is complete, delete that file
Your QBW file size is almost 12 GB? Are you using QBD Enterprise?
Please read my reply carefully, it's the tlg that had grown that big
Sorry. How big is your QBW file size?
I'm on premier, file is 118,060Kb
118MB file size should still run without any issues on Premier. Consider to install the trial version for QBD 2022 and upgrade your file. Do you see any difference?
No thanks, my machine can only run Win7, so 2016 is basically the upgradest I can run. As mentioned by so many, the problems seem far more programming related than anything else anyway.
"Consider to install the trial version for QBD 2022 and upgrade your file. Do you see any difference?"
1) If you install the "trial QBD22" and upgrade your file, and later you determine you do not wish to continue with QBD22, can you downgrade your file and go back to the older version of QB?
2) What is the maximum file size, kb or mb, that QBD 20 and QBD22 can handle? Is the degradation in performance linear?
3) What is the documented performance gain (if any and define the characteristics in terms of start up, file saving, or whatever floats your boat) when reducing the working QB file from 118,060Kb to 59,030? If those kb sizes are have not been tested provide a value that has been. And whom or who certified the gains, using what hardware and OS and provide their credentials.
Secure your backup file prior to upgrade it to any newer version. You can still purchase the one time license for QBD 2021 if required later.
Our experience is that Pro and Premier data files start to take a long time to run reports at the 150-200 MB size. In addition, Pro and Premier become more susceptible to data corruption and other funky issues if they get to be too large.
1) Back up. Yeah, I think I would back up anything run in Intuit software.
2) "Our"? Is that like the A team?
3) "Pro and Premier data files start to take a long time to run reports at the 150-200 MB size"
I'm guessing that is an understatement; you are being too kind.
4) " In addition, Pro and Premier become more susceptible to data corruption and other funky issues,
(Nooooo. Really?) at the 150-200 MB size". Hmmmmm. Could that have anything to do with Intuit's unusual file (db) design?
Seriously, I can write an accounting program with Alpha Five running under XP mode in Windows 7 that is more stable than QB. And, I had used a simple Lotus 1-2-3 (with Harvard Graphics just for some pazaz) to do payroll taxes that is was more accurate than the $500 per year Intuit subscription I now have. AND, when I need tech support I don't have to consult the rooster in the kitchen.
My tlg file is 576 KB, backups only 85 KB and I have had issues from the beginning of using QB DTPro 2020, it was installed on a new computer with no other programs other than the operating system. As stated before, I've been a long time user over 25 years, and 2020 is the worst not to mention "support" if you can call it that

You must create and launch your product immediately and then bring it to market. What's holding your back?
Hi, I don't have any problems with the rooster in the kitchen (or most likely, outside the open window in the kitchen) as long as the support is good.
The problem here is we are trying to deal with a problem that simply will not be resolved until you move to the "lesser than" online subscriptions that is 5 times slower with data entry.
The only way to speed up this PIG of a program (doesn't matter which version, they are all pigs) is to switch to SSD or NVRAM drives to compensate for the sloppy, piggish programming that has been patched, patched, patched since the 90's.
The program needed a full re-write, so they did it for the cloud.
The only thing you get with premier or enterprise are a handful of additional reports and ability to add more users.
Seriously, a database (pseudo-sql) that is "too big and slows down" at 238mb is a pathetic excuse.
You are wasting your time and bits. They know its a poor excuse for a database app, but don't care because they are #1. The only reason they are #1 is because they got to the SMB market first, and companies stay with it because new hires "Know" Quickbooks.
In this case the software you know is better than one you don't, and you want new employees to be able to sit down and go to work, without having to learn their way around a different vendor. Same reason users stay with even more pathetic excuse for software SAGE 50, or SAGE 100. It's still Peachtree under the hood and support is twice as bad as QB.
Both use PREDITORY sales techniques by disabling features like email invoices just to get you to buy it again, again and again. Either desktop version or cloud, they have you by the b@11's and know it.
That's why the button says "SUBMIT" and not "enter".
Ya know what so depressing about what you wrote?
It is that is is true.
Intuit blasted wipe away at least 5 or more halfway decent desk top accounting programs
back in the late 80's and early 90's. However, back then QB was light weight. reliable, easy to use, etc.
I just don't get why they think they have to gas light their clients with bogus 'updates'.
You would think they had a savvy board of directors.
Then again, if it walks like a duck, quaks like a duck, then .....
My back up file size is 80 KB, tlg file 320 KB, qbw.ND 1 KB. my largest file QB Company file is 117 KB.
You are absolutely RIGHT!!!
My first business was a used record store.
My accounting program was a DOME book for around $9.00
It took 15 min per day to tally the sales against the till and record expenses.
It took 30 min per month to do sales tax and carry over to next month.
With a pencil. Oh, how I long to go back to that, simple, had so much more time and
didn't have to upgrade anything except purchase a new DOME book every year

What you need to learn is how to (ab)use the reports in QB. Our revenue authority has an upload file in which you can add your csv files. The fields in reports can hardly be added or removed, but you can store different data in those fields.
In my case, the tax number of the suppliers, I copied it to the address field, which I can get in the report. Being local supply or import, I placed in fax-number, etc. etc.
My monthly VAT-returns now take just about 30 minutes.
What totally bores me is the slow way I can do my building of assemblies. I got all recipes as builds, its a simple 2 click process, each build takes about 45 seconds to be recorded, 43 is the software, 2 is me clicking....
Condense doesn't help. Intuit only wants to sell you the Online Quickbooks Gold or Desktop Enterprise. Both are a ridiculous monthly price for a small business.
I was told by a Quickbooks Account Exec that Quickbooks Pro 2020 could only handle a database size of 200K and mine is nearly 600K. I either need to upgrade to the expensive 30 user package or wipe my database out and build a new company file.
Time to look for a new software program
This is not the kind of experience we want you to have, @Carol602.
I can share some information that can help you with improving the performance of your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) 2020.
First, make sure to check if you have the necessary operating system, hardware, software, and other prerequisites to run QBDT 2020 smoothly. You can check out this link for a detailed list of information: System requirements for QuickBooks Desktop 2020 and Enterprise Solutions 20.0.
Then, keep your software up-to-date to have the latest features and fixes by updating QBDT to the latest release. If your computer system satisfies these requirements but still has performance issues, consider optimizing your server and workstations.
Refer to these articles for more information on how to enhance your computer and to resolve performance issues in QBDT:
In case you'll encounter problems opening your QBDT 2020, see the following article to know the possible causes and on how to fix it: Fix issues when QuickBooks has stopped working.
Stay in touch if you need further assistance running your QBDT 2020. I'm always here to help. Have a wonderful day!
Thanks, but I've already verified that my computer is compliant with your software and the software is up to date.
I've used all the recommended fixes and best I could manage was to remove the Audit Trail which reduced the database down to 348K. Your Account Exec's still say that size database is too large for your program to properly handle.
What do you say is the database size allowed for Quickbooks Desktop 2020?
I'd like a straight answer if your program can handle the database size or not. I have never found a reference that your program has a size limitation. Is it true or am I just getting an upsell from the Acct Exec?
I have no intentions of spending double (Quickbooks Gold online) or triple (Enterprise) my current annual fee in order to upgrade to a program that claims to handle an unlimited database size.
I can share some insights regarding your file size concern, @Carol602.
Yes, you are correct. The size of your company's data file has no actual limits. However, speed may be affected if your network cannot handle massive data files. Performance in QuickBooks suffers as the corporate file size grows.
When you have a large file and QuickBooks' performance is slow, you can reduce the size of your 303000 MB company file. To know more options in reducing the size of your file and guide you in resolving performance issues in QBDT, please see this article: Resolve QuickBooks Desktop performance issues: Manage your data file.
We can also use the Condense Data utility. This helps streamline your company data file.
Here are some valid reasons to Condense:
Follow the steps below on how run Condense Data Utility:
1. Click the File menu.
2. Select Utilities and choose Condense Data.
3. Click the first radio button as shown below. Take note that the system will advise you of the approximate reduction in your file.
4. Hit Next.
Please check this article for additional information above and how to run a report to determine which transactions it will not condense: Use the Condense Data utility.
In addition, I recommend consulting this resource for more information on the system requirements that function best with QuickBooks Desktop: System requirements for QuickBooks Desktop 2020
Please know that you're always welcome to post if you have other concerns about your data files in QuickBooks. I'll be right here to assist you.
All the Moderators keep repeating the same "steps". They don't work.
Intuit has fallen on it's face. Time for a new software company.
Anyone have any recommendations

Solution 3: Verify the Windows System Configuration
Following is the minimum system requirement that needs to be fulfilled in order to run QuickBooks Desktop efficiently:
- Core 2 Duo Intel processor 2.4 GHz minimum or any upgraded version.
- 4 Gigabytes of RAM.
- 5 Gigabytes of free disk space after installation.
- Optical Drive or connectivity to the internet.
- 1280 x 1024 Screen resolution.
- US version of Windows that must be either Windows 10, 8.1 or 7.
- Installation on a server requires Windows Server 2016, 2012 R2, 2011, or 2008 R2 SP1.
Solution 4: Reinstall QuickBooks Desktop
