Been using QB since the days of DOS.  Latest QB2020 is slowest of them all.  Any reasonable fixes?

It's not our hardware or operating system, nor the company file.  We also backed up the company file, removed QB, cleaned the registry, re-installed.  No joy

QuickBooks running slow can be encountered by users for many reasons, kuehl87.

If it takes a longer time than the usual process, here are the possible reasons why this is happening.

  • QuickBooks is not updated.
  • The computer does not meet the minimum system requirements.
  • Damaged or missing QBWUSER.INI file.
  • Corrupted hard drive.
  • Damaged program files or QuickBooks Desktop installation.
  • Damaged Windows operating system

We can use the QuickBooks Diagnostic Tool to fix this issue. Here's how:

  1. Download the QuickBooks Install DiagnosticTool.
  2. Save the file to your local Desktop.
  3. Close any open programs and run the QBInstall Tool.
  4. Reboot the computer after running the tool to ensure the components are properly updated.

You can also follow the rest of the solution if you're still having issues with QuickBooks: What To Do If You Can Open QuickBooks.

Please let me know if you need any assistance. We're always here to help.

All of the suggestions I have tried before.   The "tool" did nothing.  I even tried saving my QB file as a backup, completely uninstalling QB and every QB and Inuit registry file.  Reinstalling QB and my file and did not improve the bloated program.

1) My QB is up to date; Pro 2020 Release R7P

2) My Computer far exceeds the min requirements:

Asus X99-A MB, Intel i7-5820K@3.30GHz, 8.00 gig ram,

Windows 7 64 bit, (2) Samsung SSD860 Pro 1TB each on Sata 3 running rapid mode.

3) If I ran the tool the tool should check or repair QBWUSER.INI

4) Hard drives are not corrupted.

5) Since I ran the tool twice, removed QB and reinstalled, their are not damaged or corrupted files.

6) Windows 7 64 bit is stable, for many years.  No rational reason to re-install it or 'update to Win 10'.

7) you mean to say "What to do if you can't open QuickBooks Desktop".  The Desktop opens.  Its the new version of QB 2020 that is SLOOOOW.

8) Its a fact in the community that QB2017 was faster than QB2020, and all past versions faster than the new versions.

9) If I did not have a QB Payroll subscription I would have no reason to change from 2017 to 2020.

We take performance seriously, Kuehl87. Good job in doing all the suggestions. Let me help you from here.

To get past this hurdle, let's optimize your server and workstation. It'll fix or minimize performance issues. For the steps, please check this reference on how to resolve QuickBooks Desktop performance issues: Manage your computers.

Although, if it doesn't work, I have another article so you can fix it. It focuses on your company file. It can be the root cause of the performance issue. For more information, here's the reference on how to resolve QuickBooks Desktop performance issues: Manage your data file.

Feel free to get back to us if you need more help with this. We're open 24/7 to assist you.

I'll try to "optimize" our desktop server.

Your second option of messing with the company file?  No way!   The company file has not changed significantly in size in 1 month since having to move over from QB 2017 to QB2020.  If the company file is the issue then obviously whoever tested the new QB2020 coding at Intuit did fudged the results.

Okay,

Solution 1) "resolve QB DT performance issues: Manage  your computers"

This deals with the solutions I have already addressed:

Its NOT hardware.

Its NOT ram.

Its NOT virtual memory.

Its NOT competing programs.  When we start up the computer in the morning there are no other programs running.  We start QB and its the dog in the house here, not the other sleeping puppies.

Its NOT the OS, Win 7 64 bit is an excellent OS, and forget about Win 10 (too many new child issues).

Its NOT running on a terminal server.  And, we only got one user.

Its NOT were we run the program or store it, the Samsung SDD drive is perfect.

Its NOT the data folder.  Been using every QB on these drives and older drives.

When you "upgrade" from QB verison to QB version your software handles that.

So far, all of the suggestions have not helped, and the suggestions are generic (no offense).

Understand I have been using QB since the days of DOS (google DOS).

Hi kuehl87,

I can see that you're really experienced with QuickBooks, and you've done the steps to check the cause of the performance issue.

I would recommend checking this further with the Support team. That way, they will be able to start a screen-sharing session and take screenshots for further investigation. They are available from 6:00 AM-6:00 PM PST Monday-Friday and 6:00 AM-3:00 PM PST on Saturdays.

The last time I called QB Support was because there are issues with the built in Shipping Manager.  I spent over 1 hour on the phone with a young lady in the Philippines who literally had a rooster in the room with her kock a doodle doin during our entire phone conversation.  She said she would call me back the following day with an answer.  She called me the next day and said I had to pay for Tech Support because QB only warranties installation, they do not warranty the product.  I called into Intuit's corporate office, and said that was not nice.  I got a call back from Tech Support and they were clueless as to how the Shipping Manager works.

You want me to go through all of that nonsense again?  You have to be kidding me.  Intuit is not what they use to be.  All they care about is the bottom line P&L statement.

Very slow to save invoices and then once that finishes it's slow to print but only these two functions.  Once the save is done it pops up with the invoice is past due & has a click link to see history.  Does anyone know of settings that would turn this off and maybe that will make it faster to save.  Not sure why it takes so longer to print, there is a delay in computer responding to me clicking on print button and then creating PDF.

Thanks for sharing the details with me, @Scansy.

Let's isolate this unusual behaviour and get you back in working order. I recommend running your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) software as the Administrator. Once done, try to save and print the invoice.

Otherwise, if you already had and the result is still the same. There's a possibility that this issue is due to your company data file size. The performance of your QBDT software decreases as your company file increases. Thus, there's a delay in actions in printing and creating a PDF.

To sort this out, I got you this link that provides complete details on how to resolve QuickBooks Desktop performance issues: Manage your data file.

Also, I'm adding this useful article that can guide you in personalizing your sales form. This way, you can customize your invoice to show the details that is important to your business: Use and customize form templates.

Let me know if you need further assistance. I'll be around to help you anytime.

I have been using QB since the days of Dos.  Data file size has never been an issue.

Using QB Pro 2017 my data file (saved) was 194,740 KB.

When I had to buy QB Pro 2020 (because Intuit forces Payroll Subscription customers to "update every 3 years) my data file was 198,664 KB.  So QB Pro 2020 can NOT handle an additional 3,924 KB?  Total nonsense. Total Gaslighting!   And, ever since QB change the login feature its been a very slow connection and very slow to handle Merchant Processing.

Plus some foolish people in Intuit now force you to have your customers fill out a PDF form with all or their CC information and the customer has to email it back to you just so you can type in the same information in QB to process?  So, suddenly QB Pro is not a safe place to store CC information?  Suddenly emailed imaged documents are more secure and QB Pro with all of its log-in and password requirements that you have to change every 3 months?    All that nonsense of emailing forms back and forth, storing the printed documents in locked file cabinets in locked rooms, etc.  Might as well use another CC processing company other than Intuit.

We don't want you to feel this inconvenience, @kuehl87. And I personally want to get this fixed for you.

There are no actual limits on the size of your company data file, but performance may be hindered if your network is not capable of handling large data files.

If you have a large file and performance is slower than what is needed, you can reduce the size of your company file.

Also, you'll need to make sure that your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) and the Database Server Manager on the host or server, are up to date.

If the issue persists, you may need to optimize your server and workstations to help minimize the issue. For the detailed process, you may check it here: Resolve QuickBooks Desktop performance issues - Manage your computers.

On the other hand, we store and process your customer's information in our and our trusted partner’s data centers, which are secure and monitored by professional staff.

You can also check out this article to know why your customers need to email the same CC information: QuickBooks PCI Service FAQs.

Keep in touch if you need any more assistance with this, or there's something else I can do for you. I've got your back. Have a good day and stay safe.

The performance of QB desktop application was not "hampered" by our companies data file size.

It was running it typical slow self under QB 2017.  When Intuit forced us to change to 2020 that is when the problem started.

We are not using a "server".  We are using 1 desktop, and only 1 user.

Same for the past 20 some years.

It ain't our "server".   It ain't our hardware, and its certainly not Win 7 64 bit professional.   We can run just about any application on your desktop including CAD programs,  graphics rendering programs, and more. (and they are not running when we use Slowboat QB.   It ain't our bandwidth.   It ain't our internet connection speed.  The issue is the 'new' software by QB and whatever you do on your end.  So please stop with generalities.  I've been using Intuit products longer than you have been working for Intuit.

AND....

1) Intuit should NOT be moving our companies data file between our computer and Intuit's servers.  And, if that is happening now I need to know NOW!

The only information or data that should move is:

A) We are processing a CC

B) We are downloading software changes.

They don’t tell you this anywhere in the users’ guide for Pro or Premier, but it is important for you to know you may outgrow these versions for some technical reasons. Our experience is that Pro and Premier data files start to take a long time to run reports at the 150-200 MB. In addition, Pro and Premier become more susceptible to data corruption and other funky issues if they get to be too large. The Enterprise version was designed to handle a much larger data file. There are some businesses running smoothly today with data files over 1 GB. If you find that you are outgrowing Pro or Premier, the transition into Enterprise is very seamless and easy to do. Another option, consider condensing your file or create a new one. You may utilize a 3rd party tool to migrate the data easily if you don't familiar with IIF feature. There is no hard and fast rule on this topic. Nor is there any way to know exactly how many invoices, estimates, etc. will get your data file to become “too big”. However, these rules of thumb relating to the 150–200 MB max file size for Pro and Premier have served our clients very well.

Nope, its not a matter of the size of my data file.

However, this is what I discovered today.

You know that funky little icon in the upper right-hand corner of your screen, kinda

looks like an oval broach; aka the "Sign In" icon.  I forget when this little brat showed up to the party, but it slows you down big time. Its required to be "on" or 'signed in' when you are doing CC processing.

Well, with QB2020 we noticed that simply 'cutting and pasting' text or data and inserting it in the various fields in QB is now slow; we have to wait a few seconds for the paste operation to complete.

For example, you have an online order site where you collect customers' orders and you want to cut and paste in the customers billing address or shipping address in to QB (you not using an import features).  Well, when you are "signed in", the funky oval icon is green, things move reallllllll sloowwwwww.   Sign out and things work quickly just as if you are cutting and pasting data from a non Intuit application.

You may have 3 options to troubleshoot:

1. Run the Condense utility to split the company file. You will get a new file with the smaller size.

2. Open your company file on the trial license of QBES 2020

3. Put your license and company file on a QB cloud hosting.

kuehl87
Level 3

SLOW QB Desktop 2020 pro

1) What data or information is lost when 'condensing' or splitting a file?

2) If we do "condense or split' the company file explain specifically what "troubleshooting"

we can do.  What are the specific 'steps' we are doing other than following instructions like blind sheep.

2) Simply opening QB pro 2020 takes over 60 seconds now compared to QB pro 2017,

using nearly the same company file size.  Explain what processes or changes took place

with QB 2020 over 2017.

3) Now, with QB pro 2020, simply trying to process a credit card takes longer.  Many times the pop up window does to populate with the customers information, we fall asleep watching it.  Sometimes we have to sign out and sign back in, or shut down QB and restart.   I'm gonna say that is an issue with servers on the merchant processing side, NOTHING to do with the KB of file size.

If you have a QB Payroll subscription for desk top you are forced to "upgrade" QB every 3 years.

The payroll features seldom change.

QB features have not really changed in 20 years.

Ask me how I know.

I am aware of their current "3 years policy". But you had QBD 2018 and it should be supported until May 2021. Is there another hidden policy?
