Link suddenly missing in categorization history!

There was a link in the categorization history that provided access to historical detail.  I used it Friday and as of Tuesday it's missing.  I was told that there was an upgrade?  That link saved me so much time and provided for consistency for categorization.  Does anyone know anything about this?  Has anyone noticed it's missing?  I used it all the time...  I don't even know any workarounds other than manual look ups that will take forever.  See the screenshot attached where it used to be.

I appreciate you for laying out the details of your concern and for attaching a screenshot, @barbara grobicki.

I'll share some insights on how we can get around this issue so you can manage your transactions seamlessly. I recommend logging out and logging back in to your QuickBooks Online (QBO) to refresh it.

If the issue persists, I suggest accessing your account via a private or incognito window. This allows us to determine whether the problem is due to browser caching.

When the browser is full of cache data, it can hinder the views and performance of your account. Using a private window helps us verify the issue as this doesn't store any cache files.

To access a private window, you can refer to these keyboard shortcuts:

  • Ctrl + Shift + N (Google Chrome browser)
  • Ctrl + Shift + P (Mozilla Firefox & Microsoft Edge browsers)
  • Command + Shift + N (Safari browser)

If you’re able to see the link, I’d suggest clearing your regular browser's cache to refresh and optimize your browser. If the issue remains, I recommend using other supported browsers. This way, we can check if this is a browser-specific issue.

Once you're ready, you might want to utilize this article that can help you efficiently match your accounts: Reconcile an account in QuickBooks Online.

If you have any other concerns or questions about categorizing your transactions, please feel free to tag me in your reply. Our doors are always open to help you. Have a great day!

Hi Jason, Thank!  Couple of notes:  I already tried loggin out and in, and I also already tried the Incognito window.  Neither of those worked.  I had not tried a different browser.  I had been using Chrome so tried using MicroSoft Edge - which is a fresh browser as I never use it normally.  Still no dice.  The link is gone.  The person at the Help Desk when I called said this must have been deleted during a QuickBooks Online update that occurred early this week?  I just am shocked that such a useful link would be deleted.  The article doesn't help as this is issue about quickly matching the account AND memo information that has been used in the past (especially if one vendor has charges that go to several accounts).  The memo information is critical as I have to prepare reports for our board of directors - so it needs to match each month for recurring charges.  It was super easy just to access that, confirm and copy that information.  Now I guess I will have to open another window and search for that previous charge?  That would take me forever for these recurring charges.

It must be frustrating when there's an option you usually use that no longer works, @barbara grobicki. But don't worry I know other ways how to see the transactions assigned to a specific category.

In QuickBooks Online (QBO), you can use reports to perform this task. To start, let's pull up the Transaction Detail by Account report. Please refer to these steps:

  1. In your QBO account, click the Reports menu located on the left pane.
  2. Next, scroll down to the For my accountant section.
  3. From there, look for the Transaction Detail by Account report and click it.
  4. Once opened, select the Customize button so you can set the correct date range and filter the data.
  5. Go to the Filter section and check the box for Distribution account.
  6. Then, choose the specific account or category where the transactions are allocated.
  7. When finished, select the Run report button.

For an additional guide in categorizing your transactions, here's the article that you can access: Categorize and match online bank transactions in QuickBooks Online.

Also, since the disappearance of the link happens after the software update, I recommend sending product feedback to our developers. This is a great way to let them know your insights and suggestions to improve the program's features. Here's how:

  1. Select the Gear icon located in the upper right part of your QBO page.
  2. Then, choose Feedback under the Profile column.
  3. The feedback box will appear. From there, enter your comments about the product.
  4. Once done, select Next to submit.

After that, you can visit our QuickBooks Online Feature Requests website to get updates about your submitted feedback.

It's recommended to perform the reconciliation process regularly. This method ensures that the balance of your account and real-life bank statement is matched.

If you have any other questions about the process I've outlined above, please leave a reply below. I want to make sure your queries and QBO concerns will be taken care of. Thanks for posting here. Have a good day.

Link suddenly missing in categorization history!

Hi Divina,

I want to be clear that I reconcile every month.  That is required by our board of directors and I distribute financials monthly.  I'm not sure how the "Transaction Detail" report would help?  Can you be more specific?  I used to breeze through categorizing recurring charges in a few minutes because I used a bank feed.  Using a report to somehow check things seems cumbersome but I'm also not sure how that report would help?  I run those monthly.  The "categorization and match" artcicle just talks about categorization (which you have to do) - but using the categorization history (specifically the categorization history detail - the categorization history link is still there - it's only when you go into that that the link to history is missing) to make sure that everything is aligned is not discussed.  I have twice sent feedback.  I think there was a software update (I only know that because the help desk person said that she thought an update went through)?  I don't know that for sure.  Maybe there is just a glitch that is preventing that link from appearing?

I also am not sure how to check the status of feature requests?  I went in there and didn't see mine anywhere?  And technically, it's not a feature request - it's a critical part of the platform that is no longer working.

I recognize the importance of the categorization history feature when managing your transactions in QuickBooks Online, @barbara grobicki.

Allow me to clarify things out about what you can do to make categorization and matching easier.

It's correct that there was a software update wherein it made the categorization history link unavailable in QuickBooks. In the meantime, you can utilize the Transaction by Detail report. This report shows transactions assigned to a specific category.

Additionally, you can review the status of your feature request through this helpful link: Customer Feedback for QuickBooks Online.

Just reply to this thread if you need extra assistance with banking or QuickBooks. I'm always ready to help. Stay safe!

Link suddenly missing in categorization history!

Hi MIch,

Thank you cofirming that this link was removed during an upgrade.  Was this in error or included as part of a roadmap?  Are there plans to bring it back?  I have submitted feedback but cannot find my feedback on this in the Customer Feedback section.  And technically, this is not a request to add something.  This was an abrupt removal of a very useful tool.  I literally thought I had gone crazy as there was no indication that anything had changed or any upgrade had happened.  Can you let me know where my feedback is in the feedback forum?  Or how to find it?

While I recognize that there are workarounds to this link, it will literally take me several additional hours (that I don't have) to complete was an very simple task that I could do in seconds.  Is there any reasoning behind removing this link?  Or was this simply overlooked in error during the upgrade?  Surely I can't be the only one that noticed this (or maybe people wait until month-end to do this normally - I keep on top of it through the month).

I can see how the updates affect your navigation experience, Barbara.

QuickBooks developers always search for ways to improve user experience by promoting helpful and efficient features to streamline processes that suit your business needs. That being said, the program is constantly updating its features and functionalities to stay current and competitive.

At this moment, we're unable to provide a specific time frame for when this categorization history feature becomes available again.

You’ll want to sign in and create an account to search for your feedback. I’m glad to show you the steps:

  1. Visit the Customer Feedback forum.
  2. Above the Search field, click the Sign in link.
  3. Select Create an account.
    Capture.PNG

Once done, go back to the first page and search for your submitted feedback.

I’ve attached this article to make sure accounts are balanced and accurate: Learn the reconcile workflow in QuickBooks. It includes steps to edit reconciliation and ways to fix issues.

If you have any other questions or concerns besides the categorization history feature and feedback forum, please don't hesitate to let me know. I’ll be here. Always take care!

That's very disappointing that there is no timeframe to correct what I can only assume was an error.  Also, there should be notification when updates occur.  Usually platforms are transparent about releases?

Anyway, I have sent in two feedback comments and neither of them are posted or I can't find them.  It also says I haven't posted feedback (which I have - twice).  Could there be a reason they aren't there?  Are you able to see them?
