Hi there, @Russ88.

Thanks for continuing using QuickBooks for your business. I'm here to provide information on how to upgrade QuickBooks from 2007 and convert your company file to a new QuickBooks Desktop version.

There's an Easy Upgrade feature that will automatically create an updated copy of your most recent files if you have an active QuickBooks subscription. You only need to perform the following steps if you have to update additional company files.

To upgrade or convert your company file to a newer version:

  1. Go the File menu.
  2. Select Open or Restore Company.
  3. Select Open a company file and click Next.
  4. Highlight your data file and select Open. If the Move Company File window appears, follow the on-screen instructions.
  5. Read the info in the Update Company File for New Version pane.
  6. Check the box to signify you understand and click Update Now.
  7. Follow the instructions on how to back up your file. Note where you save your file.
  8. When the message You are about to open a company file using a newer version of QuickBooks...Do you want to continue? appears, click Yes.
  9. Save the backup you created in a safe location until you are certain you won't need it again.

For reminders before upgrading or converting the file, look into this article: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/community/Getting-Started/Upgrade-or-convert-your-company-file-to-a-new-QuickBooks-Desktop/td-p/203424.

On the other hand, you can use the Migrator Tool section on Move or reinstall QuickBooks Desktop to another computer to move both your product and company file to another computer. The following article contains other solutions for this situation: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/community/Getting-Started/Move-your-company-files-to-another-computer/td-p/201320.

For future references, use the article below to upgrade QuickBooks:

With this information, you should be able to install QuickBooks and transfer company files. Let me know how this goes after following the steps above. If you have other questions, don't hesitate to leave a comment below. I'll be glad to answer.

Yes, you can, kengeroo.

There are a few things we'll have to do before we can migrate since 2007 to 2020 is a long jump. When upgrading to a higher version we'll need to have a gradually upgrade QuickBooks like from 2007 to 2010 > 2013 > 2017 then 2020 via Portable File Format (backup copy)

You can get in touch with our Customer Support Team and they'll upgrade it for you. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Help menu and click QuickBooks Desktop Help
  2. Select Contact us
  3. Enter your concern about migrating your 2007 company file to 2020.
  4. Click Continue and choose to either call or chat with us.

You can click here for more details on What’s new in QuickBooks Desktop 2020

Please let me know if there's anything else that you need help.

I have the same problem from QB 2007 to QB 2014.  I ran 2007 for 12 years without problems (so why "fix it"); and then one day I wasn't able to access my company files.  To continue my business I opened a new company file on QB we bought in 2014 and that runs fine.  I need to open the 2007 QB though as it has all of my contact information.  So, I don't really need to "migrate" the files as a continuing business, but really need to be able to access the 2007 QB files - to "open" QB 2007.  I'm running Windows 7 and use Avast Premium Security.  Is there a way to "open" the 2007 files?

I appreciate you joining in this thread, easywindowsandsiding.

To get this done, you'll need to update your old data so you can start migrating the file to QuickBooks Online. As an initial step, ensure you have saved a back up copy of your company file.

After that, you can follow the steps below to update the file:

  1. Download a trial version of QuickBooks Pro 2020.
  2. Make sure all users log out of your company file.
  3. Open your new version of QuickBooks Desktop.
  4. Click File at the top menu bar and select Open or Restore Company if you don't have a company file open. You can also go to the File menu and select Open or Restore Company.
  5. Select Open a company file, then Next. If you have a backup company file (QBB) instead of a company file (QBW), select Restore a backup copy and then Local backup.
  6. Browse your computer for your company file. Select it and then select Open.
Note: If you can't find your company file, open the Windows Start menu and then File Explorer. Search for your company file by name or the .qbw file extension.

If you still can't find it, make sure it's not hidden.

  7. Sign in to your company file as an admin user.
  8. Before you upgrade, QuickBooks automatically creates a backup of your existing company file. You can select Change this default location to save the backup in a specific folder.
  9. Select Update Now to start the upgrade.
  10. When QuickBooks finishes, hit Done.

Once done, you can refer to this article for the detailed steps in migrating your data from desktop to QuickBooks Online: Move your QuickBooks Desktop file to QuickBooks Online. On the same link, you'll find resources about how to manage your file in the online version.
