We are no longer able to switch back to the old format. The new format is unusable. This might be the most incompetent product rollout ever. We're looking at switching immediately to a different platform.
Please advise alternative platforms.
This is exactly my issue and QB support is NOT helpful!!!
There is no old invoice button visible
Thanks for joining the thread, @Shrrrice.
We aim to provide concise information to help our customers resolve their situation using QuickBooks Online (QBO). Please be aware that if your subscription is QBO Simple Start, the option to switch back to the invoice's old layout is no longer available. Stop forcing change! I am not able to switch back to the old layout, which is ridiculous. I will be looking for another accounting software provider. I need subtotal lines in my invoices!
I understand that the new invoice layout has changed your usual way of conducting business tasks, @luke7.
However, I would like to inform you that, due to the recent product update, QuickBooks Online (QBO) Simple Start users will not have the option to revert to the old layout starting from October 16, 2023.
I acknowledge your frustration regarding the absence of the subtotal function on the new invoice layout. It would be most beneficial to directly convey your feedback to our Product Developers. They genuinely value your input and encourage you to share your suggestions through the feedback system.

So let me see if I am understanding this correctly. In order to use all the basic functions that anyone sending out invoices would use and have been using all along I now need to pay for a more expensive version of quickbooks which provides a bunch of features that I do not need. I believe the term for this is bait and switch.
Are you saying if we upgrade to the next subscription level ("Essential") we will have access to the old invoicing layout indefinitely?
Hello there, @stuc.
I understand how efficient it is to use the old invoice layout. I'd like to inform you that from October 16, 2023, QuickBooks Online Simple Start users will not have the option to switch back to the old layout.
I understand that the new invoice layout differs from the usual way of creating your invoice transactions. While this option isn't available, I recommend sending a feature request directly to our product engineers.
Here's how:
Furthermore, I'd like to provide you with this article to learn how to customize sales form templates: Customize invoices, estimates, and sales receipts in QuickBooks Online.
I'd gladly assist if you have further concerns about QuickBooks Online display preference.
Yes, that has been made clear to us. My questions is, are you allowing users of a more expensive subscription to continue using the old layout moving forward?
Welcome to the Community, @stuc.
You can upgrade to an expensive subscription, but it doesn't guarantee that you can continue to use the old invoice layout you're used to.
If you still have the option to switch back to the old invoice layout, you can use it. Please note that by changing back, you may be unable to utilize and use the new invoice layout.
When a customer pays, we must record the payment and link it to the invoice for accounting purposes. For more information, please refer to this article: Record invoice payments in QuickBooks Online.

Can we get a clear answer here? "You can upgrade to an expensive subscription, but it doesn't guarantee that you can continue to use the old invoice layout you're used to." is not an answer, either we can upgrade to a service that will allow us to continue invoicing or we can't. I am sure many users are scrambling to find a suitable replacement for Quickbooks so it would be helpful to understand what our options are.
Hello, armzhouse! We are grateful for your participation in the Community thread and appreciate you for sharing your queries and sentiments regarding the new invoice layout. We would be glad to provide you with further information and assist you in resolving any related concerns.
This new user interface has been developed from scratch and has been rolled out since June with new features and increased availability. Beginning October 16, 2023, Simple Start users will be automatically change to the new invoice experience and will not have the option to opt-out. It means that they will not be able to revert to the old invoice layout. However, users who have upgraded or are currently using QuickBooks Essentials, Plus, or Advanced versions can switch back to the old invoice layout, if they prefer, by selecting “Old layout” from the invoice screen. They will not lose any of their existing invoices. See the screenshot below:

Well, that is at least clearer than your colleagues previous answer. I would like to point out that if you read through the comments you will find that the people who actually use QBO for invoicing do not in any way find the new invoice to be simplified or improved. It is as if the people who designed this do not understand what an invoice is used for. I hope some of this information is making its way back to the people who could fix this.
Will the ability to use the old layout, in one of the premium subscriptions, be indefinite? Or will there also be a forced migration there as well?
I appreciate you for taking part in this discussion, @stuc. Let me address your concern about the ability to switch back to the old layout in QuickBooks Online (QBO).
I understand that you prefer the old invoice layout. However, all QBO subscription plans will be updated to the new invoice and estimate experience. When we fully roll out the updates, you'll be unable to keep using the old layout option.
For more detailed information, please see these links:
If you worry about being forced to migrate to another subscription, rest assured that you can continue using your plan as long as you wish.
Furthermore, you may personalize your sales forms, so they'll look professional when sending them to your customers. You also get to decide which information to include when emailing invoices.
Stay in touch if you have further clarifications about the old invoice layout in QBO. I'll be glad to offer additional assistance. Take care and have a good one!
Yeah we can tell it was developed from scratch. Probably by a bunch of people who have never run a business before as well. What everyone is saying is that it is not an improvement, it is a complete departure from what made QB good to use. Please don't respond with a foolish pat answer about teaching us how to use something that is obviously worse.
LAST WEEK I was able to switch to old invoice template. I need it for my requirements as well. I sign on today Oct. 22 and I CANNOT SWITCH to old invoice template the option is gone. I want to stay in old invoice template until they can make the new one work to my requirements, but they've now taken that option away. Every time I opened QB after changing back to old template the previous visit, it puts me back in the new format.
I'm embarrassed to send the invoice out like this but I need to get invoices out to my clients and get paid. I can't even get anyone on phone or chat. The QB help section is really inadequate.
This is so upsetting and on a continual basis. Since November of 2022, QB has been pretty much just a big headache. I have to spend so much more time figuring things out (No clear directions many times) and yet have to pay more for my monthly subscription now. Not a happy customer at all.
YOU DON'T LISTEN TO FEEDBACK! I'VE BEEN ASKING FOR A CERTAIN CHANGE FOR OVER A YEAR. NOTHING. NADA. CRICKETS.
AGREE. I'm so mad right now at the position this is putting us all in and what a time-waster QB has become.
the NEW TEMPLATE is TERRIBLE........ DOES NOT HAVE the SHIPPING & TRACKING fields on the INVOICE. the NEW INVOICE TEMPLATE is not ADEQUATE. And I CANNOT switch to the OlD LAYOUT. This is RIDICULOUS... And no way of customizing seems available. Thanks.... jen
WHERE IS THE PACKING SLIP PRINT BUTTON? WHY DOES THIS LOOK LIKE A CHILD MADE THE INVOICE LAYOUT? WHY DO YOU FORCE THESE CHANGES UPON YOUR CUSTOMERS? MY AUTOMATED EMAIL TO CUSTOMER HAS MY PERSONAL EMAIL AND NOT MY COMPANY'S EMAIL. THERE IS NO SHIPPED ON DATE. I AM NOT GOING TO EDIT MY CUSTOMERS SHIP TO ADDRESS EVERY TIME I HAVE TO SHIP IT TO THEIR MULTIPLE LOCATIONS THEY HAVE.
YOU NEED TO MAKE THIS WORK BEFORE YOU PUSH IT ONTO YOUR CUSTOMERS FIRST! PLEASE GIVE US BACK THE "OLD LAYOUT" OPTION AGAIN!
THIS IS MY FEEDBACK. THE KIND THAT ALL OF YOUR CUSTOMERS CAN SEE, NOT THE ONE WHERE IT GOES IN YOUR EMAIL TRASH BIN. STOP TELLING US TO KINDLY F OFF, AND RESPECT YOUR CUSTOMER BASE.
Some adjustment? Seriously? If it allowed us to do the things we need like the old template did, THAT would be an adjustment I understand. Taking us to a template that screws the pooch is not an adjustment we are happy to try to make.
OK, so you can now change the ship to address on the invoice. I would be nice to have a drop down of all the saved address for that business (like the desktop pro had). And all the "Print and download", "Print packing slip", "Review and send", "Receive payment", and "Share link" are all in the green button on the lower right of the invoice creation/edit page. The "Edit", "Email view", "PDF view", and "Payor view" at the upper left hand of the page are worthless and should be removed. The invoice and packing list look like they used to.
Still no ship date, and no dedicated area to insert the tracking #.
All these things should have been discovered during the beta testing, but I am guessing EVERYONE probably clicked the "Old layout" so nothing was discovered. Now they are forcing it on us SimpleStart users to beta test it for them before they roll it out to the higher priced users. Free of charge for them, and a annoying hassle for us peasants.
