I'm here to share some information about adding a tip, crystalricotta.
Currently, QBO doesn't have the option to let a customer add a gratuity/tip when paying an invoice. However, I have two workarounds that you may consider.
The first option is we can add a separate service item for tips on the invoice. Here's how:
The other way is to turn on the Tip (Gratuity) option. Just a heads up, this feature is available in sales receipts.
To turn on this feature, here's how:

This is still causing us, as the service provider, to request the desired tip amount from our client. This is both presumptive and rude. Since Quickbooks Go Payment on my mobile device has a screen that allows tips to be added, certainly it is possible to add this feature on the emailed invoice portion.
I keep getting emails saying that this should answer/solve my issue. It absolutely does not! Asking the client how much they would like to tip is tactless.
Please add the feature to a screen or a portion of the emailed invoices just as it is in Go Payment screens. I'll be happy to quit posting about this when the full features are added. I have yet to be given a reason why this feature cannot be added. If there is a logistical reason it cannot be added I would love to be made aware.

In regards to the popular question "When will the tipping / gratuity option be available on emailed invoices?" Thank you for the work-around suggestions Adrian_A. I tried them, but that's not going to work. I provide graphic design and website development services and I only email my invoices with the Pay Online feature. I do not use the mobile app ever, esp during our current Covid-19 world situation.
Please understand that in this interesting time, we service providers might be doing extra to help our clients, but not always necessarily billing, – but wanting to let them have an option to show appreciation too. Please consider this an important request. Hopeful you can implement this line of code soon. Looks like the QB Community would be happy.
Curious how long you've been reaching out to intuit QB to solve your TIP/GRATUITY need as a feature on email invoices that you pay online? My partner has a rental software company in the ski industry and they deal with custom requests often to solve their clients' need. Familiar with how this process works – wondering why they're ignoring this request.
Crystal,
So far, I've been requesting this for at least 18 months, possibly 2 years. It's so frustrating I've lost count. This is not brain surgery, as you said "it's a line of code". I wish our concerns were more important to them.

Neither of those are work arounds...I cannot pre-enter a tip amount on an Invoice and send it to a Customer...seriously thinking of switching service. This is basic functionality, and directly affects my income, unacceptable...
Good morning
Read through your requestS, and I had the same exact request , I called QB and they acted like I was speaking another language ! I mean it is pretty simple to understand what we are all looking for in a feature.
Hard to believe they just don't get it done !
Have you come up with any solutions ? I am just wondering what others are doing !
Thank You.
Elias
Please add a tipping function to Quickbooks Invoices! This is so basic of a request.
We recognize each company has unique needs, johntarantino1.
I can see how beneficial it is to your business to add a tipping function to invoices. I'll personally share your feedback with our engineers regarding this one. You can also submit a product suggestion in QuickBooks Online (QBO). Let me show you how:
Then, you can track feature requests through the QuickBooks Online Feature Requests website.
In the meantime, please follow the workaround provided by Adrian_A above by adding a separate service item for tips on the invoice. You can also add tips to sales receipts in QBO. Feel free to visit our Sales and customers page for more insights about managing your customer transactions.
I'm just one click away if you need a hand with running your financial reports or any QBO related. I'm always here to ensure your success. You have a good one.
A programmer from QB called me a week ago and declared "They have made the tipping / gratuity feature an option for desktop invoices. " Hooray. I was away from my desktop at the time, and he said to call back and someone could explain this to me.
A QB Developer called me via phone last Friday, October 16, 2020 and declared that they finally adjusted the software to add the "tip / gratuity feature" to email invoices. He said to call back and someone could explain the steps to me. I was so excited. I have been posting this request to the QB community with others for years.
Today I decided to call the programmer back and eded up spending 2+ hours ( 3:48 -6 pm) talking with 3 phone reps, messaging with 8 different QB help experts, setting up one help developer intuit account, only to have accomplished nothing. Nobody knows anything. They can't tell me who called me with this important information I have been requesting for three years ? Nobody knows they made this adjustment. Quickbooks is paying a lot of people to not do their jobs. They have added the feature for us to discount our invoices, but lag after the QB community begs to have the "tip / gratuity" feature added to the email invoices.
Thanks for updating us here in the Community, @crystalricotta. I understand the need to have the Tip/Gratuity feature on the email invoices added in QuickBooks.
Additionally, our developers don't personally call to inform our QuickBooks users about any added features.
Additionally, our developers don't call QuickBooks users personally to inform about any added features.
For future reference, I'd suggest you visit our QuickBooks blog site. It's where our developers post important announcements and product updates.
For now, you'll want to follow the workaround shared by my peer Adrian_A on adding a separate service item for tips on the invoice.
I'm always here in the Community should you have any more help or if you have additional concerns. Take care.
Hello katherinejoyceO,
I do appreciate your efforts at gaslighting me, but the truth is I received a phone call from a man, with an Indian accent, who was very nice, and said he was working on the "tip/gratuity feature for email invoices" at Quickbooks. He knew of my previous posts and requests in the QB Community pages. I was driving, so I told him I would call back.
All,
I am new to QuickBooks with a new business that relies on tips. I agree this feature would be GREAT to have but in the meantime I have the following workaround:
I added the following sentence in the Email the goes out with the invoice: ..." Thanks so much for your business and a gratuity for excellent service is always appreciated. To add a gratuity just click on the little pencil next to the Payment Amount when you pay online and fill in the total amount."
This seems to work to enable the customers to tip. How you record that overpayment as a tip is a bit more tricky but possible if you do it manually.
I also agree and have tried to contact QB Online about this with no luck. Can’t they be more in touch with their costumers? Businesses like Shopify can do this why can’t QB have better customer service? —When will the tipping / gratuity option be available on emailed invoices?—
This is not the impression we want you to experience when using QuickBooks Online (QBO), Microgreens SF.
I appreciate the time and effort you've spent trying to contact our support agents. I'll personally share your feedback with our Customer Support Team regarding this one. We'll be able to take action on improving our customer service. You may contact us by sending a message via chat, call us at a time convenient to you, or we’ll get in touch with you instead. For now, we are unable to give a specific time frame on when the tipping/gratuity option will be available on emailed invoices. In the meantime, please follow the workaround provided by Adrian_A above by adding a separate service item for tips on the invoice or add tips to sales receipts in QBO. Feel free to visit our Sales and customers page for more insights about managing your customer transactions.

I don't understand. Everyone keeps saying we should use Adrian A's solution of creating a Service Item. That does not work! In order to add a gratuity that way, the amount of the tip would have to be predetermined by me. Tips don't work that way. I don't tell the client what to tip! Plus the amount needs to be able to vary from invoice to invoice. I work with a caterer. Most customers base the tip on the total bill. Even if I wanted to, I can't create a Service Item with a specific amount. Is it reasonable to expect to pay the same tip amount on a $16 invoice as a $160 invoice? No. I just don't want the powers that be at QBO to think there is a workaround when there isn't.
I 100% agree! This is incredibly frustrating especially with COVID! My clients are constantly telling me the cannot figure out how to add a tip. I do not want to assume they will tip me or put a predetermined amount there for them. I feel like I am missing out on income without this feature on emailed invoices. I am currently looking at other options. Unfortunately, QuickBooks is not meeting my needs.
I'm new to Quickbooks Online and am quite surprised to learn that this feature still hasn't been implemented in spite of the obvious need for anyone who accepts tips via email invoice. Please implement this ASAP. It seems like such a basic and widespread necessity.
This is not the impression we want you to experience in QuickBooks, PlanMan. However, our developer team is working hard to ensure the needs and best interest of our customers.
In the meantime, you can follow my colleague Adrian_A workaround above to add tips/gratuity when paying invoices.

AileneA, your anwser sounds like a bot. The Adrian_A "workaround" shouldn't be perpetuated any longer. The users have spoken.
Hey QuickBooks EMPLOYEES please just STOP with this "workaround" nonsense and instead simply acknowledge that this feature isn't available and that this is simply NOT a priority. The fact that this SIMPLE feature that your users have been begging for FOR YEARS is still COMPLETELY MISSING is a SERIOUS DEFECT of the QB Online platform.
As soon as Quickbooks makes it possible for customers to choose their own tip amounts when they pay an invoice sent to them via email, I will begin using the service. In the meantime, I will continue using PayPal, which makes this very easy for customers to do -- and PayPal will continue to receive the cut of each sale that Quickbooks could be receiving.
These "workarounds" do not work. I've been a loyal QB customer for over 5 years, I've participated in many case studies for them (in person and over phone), and they claim they want to be relevant to small business owners, service providers and independent contractors. They work HARD to make this true.
And yet, they can't seem to add this very basic function that is INTEGRAL to being a service provider and independent contractor. It is mind-boggling. Add me on the list of disgruntled small business owners who want QB to add in emailed invoices a tip option for clients to opt-in and decide how much.
Here's a recommendation to QB developers: when our company created a payment portal, we eventually made the tip auto-populate as 10%, with buttons to choose 0%, 10%, 15% and 20% -- immediately, we saw a 300% increase in our gratuity once we added this function.
We then made 15% the default and our ave gratuity increased.
QB: I believe your target demographic would be thrilled to see this instant increased revenue, due to your product. Please implement this idea ASAP! The time is now.
