I've got the steps you'll need to relink your bank account, @btwcsc-bookr-inc.

You may have created a new account instead of connecting it to the existing one. Once you add a new one, it will continue to show in your Chart of Accounts list even after disconnecting it. Not to worry, you can delete it from the list.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Accounting menu and select Chart of Accounts.
  2. Find the duplicate account.
  3. Click the dropdown arrow under the Action column and choose Make inactive.

To reconnect your bank to the existing one, follow these steps:

  1. Select Banking or Transactions.
  2. Select the Banking tab.
  3. Select Add account or Link account if you've already created one.
  4. In the search field, search for your bank, credit card, or credit union.
  5. Select Continue. Then sign in to your bank by entering your banking username and password.
  6. Follow the onscreen steps, including any additional security checks your bank might require. It may take a few minutes to connect.
  7. Select any accounts you want to connect like your savings, checking, or credit card. Then select the account type ▼dropdown and choose the matching account type from your chart of accounts in QuickBooks.
  8. Select how far back you want to download transactions. Some banks let you download the last 90 days of transactions. Others can go back as far as 24 months.
  9. Select Connect.

Once done, it will automatically download transactions. You can review and categorize downloaded them.

I'm always here if you need help with classifying your entries. It's my pleasure to help. Have a great day.

I'm having the same issues. I followed the inactivation process, but when I try to reconnect, the bank still has the connection to the inactive accounts, so now I cannot connect to the active accounts.

Hi there, Janice9990.

I appreciate you for performing the steps in activating the account in QuickBooks. With this, I'll be sharing details on the difference between disconnecting and making an account inactive. Then, I'll ensure you can achieve your goal of inactivating the connection of the bank and reconnecting the correct one.

There's a distinction between disconnecting an account from online banking and deleting one from your chart of accounts. It's recommended to disconnect accounts that are connected to online banking instead of deactivating them. This simply stops QuickBooks from downloading new transactions.

To make sure that the duplicate bank account is totally disconnected on QuickBooks, you'll have to make the inactive account active again.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon ⚙ and select Chart of accounts.
  2. Select the small Gear icon ⚙ next to the printer icon. Then, select Include inactive.
  3. Find the account you want to use again and select Make active.

Please know that QuickBooks won't add transactions back to the account or edit any journal entries it made to balance your accounts.

Once done, I suggest disconnecting the account from online banking. Keep in mind that QuickBooks deletes transactions that still need to be categorized in the For review tab. Then, you can reconnect it anytime to start downloading transactions again.

Here's how:

  1. Go to Bookkeeping, select Transactions, then Bank transactions.
  2. Select the tile for the bank account.
  3. Select the pencil icon and select Edit account info.
  4. Select the Disconnect this account on save checkbox.
  5. Click Save and Close.

After that, you can now inactive the account again in the Chart of Accounts so the said duplicate removes the connections. Then, you can now reconnect the account or connect a new active one to start downloading transactions and categorize them to avoid double transactions.

Lastly, you may refer to this article to see steps on how you can reconcile your accounts to avoid discrepancies: Reconcile an account in QuickBooks Online.

Keep on posting here if you need further help from me and leave a comment below. I'll reply as soon as possible, Janice9990. Have a great day!

While reconnecting the bank to QBO, duplicate bank accounts got linked and is also reflected in the chart of accounts even after delinking the duplicate account.

Hi Christie,

I'm wondering if you could help with duplicate transactions when reconnecting a bank account to QBO.

I already reconnected an account but QBO shows me two difference accounts even though they are the same.

So I disconnected the old one from banking. In chart of account, I renamed to new one to match the previous one, and accidentally now I have them merged and get incorrect opening balance.

Could you help advise me on how to fix this?

Thank you.

Let's make sure we can fix your opening balance when reconnecting your bank, PT16.

When you disconnect your account, QuickBooks deletes transactions that still need to be categorized in the For Review tab. Aside from that, this simply stops QuickBooks from downloading, although, your existing accounting data won't change.

Once you reconnect, depending on the date, transactions may or may not eventually appear or download in the account. That's the reason why you are getting an incorrect opening balance.

Since merging accounts is permanent and you're unable to undo them, you can manually delete the duplicate transactions or drill down those specific transactions that simply affect the issue so you can make necessary changes. To delete them, follow the steps provided below:

  1. Open the transaction. (You can go directly to the Expense or Sales menu)
  2. Go to the More tab, then select Delete.
  3. Hit Yes to confirm the action.
  4. Repeat the steps for other transactions.

You may also need to exclude transactions in order to fix the balance. Doing so doesn't let transactions appear in any account registers or financial reports. Go through this article for the detailed process: Exclude A Bank Transaction You Downloaded Into QuickBooks Online.

In addition, learn from this article how you can match and categorize transactions in your bank. This lets you understand and track your income, and expenses, retrieve information easily, and spot errors: Categorize And Match Online Bank Transactions In QuickBooks Online.
