Hello,

You need to select the top option where it says TYPE.  Right now for Cash on Hand, Checking, etc. the type says BANK.  Change the type and you will have more options.

Hi there, welcomehomemn1.

MarshallA  is correct. When creating a new account on your Chart of Accounts, the list showing on the Detail Type depends on the Account Type selected. The reason why it displays Cash on hand, Checking and other it's because you've pick Bank as the Account Type.

To create a liability account, you can select Other Current Liabilities or Long Term Liabilities instead. From there, the corresponding Detail Type comes up.

See this article for a guide on how to set up your chart of accounts: Add an account to your chart of accounts in QuickBooks Online.

The problem is that the Account Type doesn't show up as an option with the drop down arrow.  I know what you are talking about with that because I've set them up before.   The problem is that only Detail Type Shows up so you can't switch the Account Type.  See the attached screenshot from my computer.

Thanks for your prompt response, @welcomehomemn1. I didn't see your attached screenshot.

Based on what you described, it looked like you're having a browser-related issue. We can confirm this by logging to your account in a private or an incognito window. Here's how:

  • On your keyboard, press Ctrl Shift (Google Chrome).
  • Ctrl Shift (Firefox or Internet Explorer).
  • Control Option (Safari).

See if you're now able to see the Account Type options. Then, clear the cache on your main browser to fix the issue. If it's still an issue, use another supported, up-to-date browser.

For future reference, read through this article in case you'll need to change the detail type of an existing account: How to change the type of an existing parent account or sub-account.
