Importing tax/financial data from Quickbooks into TurboTax Business

Let me share some details about importing your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) tax information into TurboTax, umerrazi.

We appreciate you for performing the recommended solutions on this thread. We'll need to review also your QuickBooks Desktop account setup. Then, we'll need to take note of the following tips:

  • QuickBooks should be installed on the same local drive as TurboTax (not networked) and need to be registered.
  • You'll need QuickBooks Administrator access.
  • The QuickBooks company file (.qbw filename extension) must be in single-user mode and should've been opened at least once on the computer you're using to import (no need to leave it open during the import).
  • QuickBooks for Mac data must be converted to Windows before it can be imported (instructions).
  • Be sure to update your QuickBooks data before importing, so that your books match your tax return.

If you already performed those tips, I'd suggest contacting Turbotax Business Support to help you fix this issue. They can guide you through the steps to settle this concern since they have the right tools and expertise to help you determine why this concern has occurred. To contact them, follow the steps below:

Unfortunately, I have been in touch with Intuit support, and they are not able to resolve the issue/bug in the software, nor were they aware of it.

TT Biz V 023. 000. 0207 (Last Updated 11JAN2024)

I have tried and Comply with all steps outlined in your post.

@Mark_TTBIZ

Have you tried the trial version of QBD 2023 or 2024?

As noted earlier, I am surprised and disappointed that the support team at Intuit is not aware of this issue in TurboTax. And I am similarly disappointed that no one has taken ownership of the issue, and found a conclusive answer. One should not have to implement some type of workaround in order to address this bug in the program.  It's shameful that Intuit hasn't stepped up to address this directly.

Why do you think it's a bug? It says in the Turbo Tax import menu "Quickbooks(2022-2024). Looks like TT is not supporting versions of QBD older than 2022

Yes, it would seem that way.  Cynically, one might think it's Intuit's attempt to drive users away from the desktop version to the online version, which generates annual recurring revenue for them.

do you have a link for QB Desktop 2023 or 2024... I have only seen Enterprise edition.  If they had a 2024 Desktop edition available i would probably buy it...

MKD520, where are you seeing this? my TT Desktop 2023 Biz says it supports import from 2021 "No additional Purchase Required."

Thanks!

I show the same.  In mine, it says, "Now compatible with Quickbooks 2021 through 2024.  (No purchase required.)

Not.

I believe the desktop version is available, but you have to call Intuit to purchase it.  And the pricing is such that it's way more expensive than their online product.  It certainly looks like they want to move everyone into the SAS model, whereby everyone now pays a recurring annual fee (that's not inexpensive).

Been there, done that.  You get no response from the program.

I got tired of waiting around for a fix for my simple S corp, so went ahead and entered numbers manually to get things done this time.  Now have to wait for Jan 24 to be able to get final forms to file it seems.

I thought about trying to get money back guarantee but the thought of the hassle made me suck it up and just let it go this year and bought the $50 state to have things completed.  Since not importing QB date makes Turbotax an overpriced product with zero benefits, I looked at deals on H&R Block to try next year.  Seems deals on H&R for biz can be had for $45 including state!!!  And it's a product that can be used for personal taxes as well as biz, all in one it seems!  Been loyal to Turbotax for decades but I think it's time to explore outside of it if manually entering numbers.  Have to do that for personal Turbotax anyway, so might as well roll both all into a single H&R product that is priced so much cheaper.

Whoever at Intuit that wanted to force everyone into QB online subscription business will lose the small fishes like me, who used to at least buy QB desktop with payroll every year.  I actually moved to QB online last year when they forced everyone, but after 2 months I just could not deal with the stupid online interface vs. the desktop no matter how many times I clicked around.  I had to cancel the QB online and go back and manually enter things into desktop and spent countless hours and days trying to figure out payroll.  During which I even found QB online payroll filed a form with mis-categorized health insurance part (when compared to forms QB desktop had filed before the online move).  I had to go fill out a revised form 941 and mail out to IRS to make sure they didn't think I was suddenly trying to hide the health insurance number.

The mandatory forcing to online cost me so much time and effort to fix and find alternate ways to keep my simple biz going.  Now this Turbotax fiasco is the final nail in the coffin for me, they don't need slow older folks like me who can't keep up with rapid changes to fix what was never broken.

Many thanks, KC-ICK, for the detailed email.  Your reality is mine.  Been a loyal TT customer for years.  After getting nowhere with Intuit re the bug in this year's TT, we bit the bullet and did the manual entry.  And given that it's end of year, there are ultimately adjustments, and we had to got back and manually adjust the TT entries.  Unreal.
Thanks for the info re  H&R.  Will definitely check it out.
Certainly feels like Intuit is looking to weed out some of its users.  Definitely doesn't create much goodwill.

@Mark_TTBIZ

You can still purchase QB Desktop 2024 Pro Plus or Premier Plus through a select partner. But why do you need to buy it when you can use the trial version of QB Desktop Enterprise 2022-2024 for free?

Thanks mdk520,

It seems we have a slightly different version.

in mine the Navigation: File > Import > From QuickBooks is the only option. i don't get the "From Accounting Software" Option.

when i follow these steps, it gets me to the same bug/error as the Step-by-step and selecting YES to import > Continue.

but in our version, it says compatible with 2021 through 2024.

I had your same issue. TT looked at it without any luck. Ended up downloading the 2024 QB enterprise trial and TT immediately found the software and my QB2021 pro company file and imported it.

I hope this helps. Will add to your OP for others looking as well.

I am leaving QB and TT behind for my business. This was ridiculous. All to make more money on their side.

QuickBooks Pro 2021 will not import into TurboTax Business 2023 no matter what you do. Just for the heck of it, I opened TurboTax 2022 and started a new return, checked to import QuickBooks info and it worked. This has to be a programming error with the Business 2023 program and TurboTax doesn't seem to understand that.

@Wigsout

At least you are lucky to still be using QB Desktop with a non-subscription license until now. Otherwise, you will need a workaround if you are using QB Desktop 2022 or later.

TT support said it would work with QB 2022-2024.
