Also having an issue.
My sales tax report includes transactions for tax-exempt customers and for customers who are in states that we haven't reached nexus for and haven't collected tax on.
How do we fix this?
Thanks for reaching out to us, @ksachse1.
I would love to help you, but I just need extra details about your concern. May I know what specific tax report you mean? Or would you mind sharing a screenshot? This way, I can check and provide the correct resolution.
Any additional information will be greatly appreciated. Looking forward to your reply.
Sales Tax Liability Report showing no non-taxable sales
There should be a sweep in the software. Gross sales less taxable sales = non taxable sales. In addition, gross sales doesn't include the non-taxable sales.
Hello there, @sjkcpa989.
I have some information about the incorrect numbers on the Sales Tax Liability report.
Our engineers are already addressing this unexpected behavior. Rest assured that they are approaching this with the utmost urgency and are attempting to identify a permanent fix.
You must register for the list of affected users if you want to add your business to the investigation. It needs collection of personal data for account verification. For the security of your information, we can't perform this task since the Community is a public forum.
Our QBO Care Team has tools to access your account in a secure space, so I recommend contacting them for further assistance. You will receive an email updates on the issue.
Click on the Help icon to open the QB Assistant window.
For future reference, you can check the Sales tax in QuickBooks Online instructions. It has some links to information on tasks you can complete, like paying taxes, instructions on how to apply the tax rate to transactions, and solutions to frequently asked questions.
I appreciate your patience while this is being worked on. Reach out to me anytime if you need some help working in QuickBooks. I will be glad to assist you further. Have a good one.
Any resolution timetable on this issue? I spent my afternoon trying to figure this out via chat, only to come to this community and find out it has been an issue for a loooooong time. I need to pay my sales tax for 2 different states, and the gross sales and non-taxable sales numbers are wrong. I do not have time to go through every single invoice to see what state it's from, and add up every sales tax amount manually. Sales tax is due in 5 days. My QB Desktop never had this issue. This makes me want to find a new accounting system...I cannot deal with this every time I need to file and pay sales tax.
Hi there, @tlarsendesign. I understand the urgency to get this issue resolved.

I recommend contacting our Customer Care Support team so that you'll be added to the list of affected users. This way, you'll receive email updates on the investigation's status and be notified once it's been resolved. I've included the steps to contact support below.
I appreciate your patience as we work through this. If you have any other concerns, please don't hesitate to drop a comment below. Take care, @tlarsendesign.
I have had the same issue non-stop for the last year, with the same response from tech help. they can't help and they don't know a work-around. Were you able to get your issues resolved, and if so, how?
It’s a mess! It is pulling up invoices from 1997 and saying they are taxable! I don’t have any taxable sales now or in the past! And I can’t correct it, even after calling support. This is ridiculous!!
I tried to uncheck the taxable button, but it refuses to save it afterwards!
Welcome to the thread, @giudidetorres and @DENS.
I want to ensure you get the help you need with sales tax in QuickBooks Online (QBO).
To be sure we're on the same page, I'd like to verify @giudidetorres what changed and what specific issue you've encountered about sales tax in QBO. And as for you @DENS, did you receive any error message when you unchecked the taxable button? Any extra information is appreciated.
We're looking forward to hearing from both of you. Have a great day!
Is QBO working on a Sales tax solution that works in California? Due dates are incorrect, monthly deposits are not supported, reporting periods are incorrect, etc, etc, etc,
Hi, @jgenshlea.
I want you to know that our product developers are working nonstop to improve and update QuickBooks that'll cater to our users' needs. At this time, Intuit is rolling out automated sales tax for all QuickBooks users wherein taxes on your invoices and receipts are calculated automatically for easy and accurate filings. Then, it lets you know when your tax payment is due, so you can file on time and avoid extra fees.
I understand how important it is for you to get a sales tax solution that will work for your state and support monthly deposits. While we don't have an update on this feature for California, I recommend sending a feature request directly to our product developers. This way, they can determine what enhancements and improvements are needed to make our product more effective and convenient for our users.
Here's how:
Once done, your valuable request goes to our Product Development team to help improve your QBO experience. You can track feature requests through the QuickBooks Online Feature Requests website.
On the other hand, I'm adding these links for more hints about sales taxes in QBO:
Please let me know if you have follow-up questions about sales taxes. I'm just a few clicks away to help. Have a good one!
I realize this thread is over 2 years old, however, the issues with QBO's horrid Automated Sales Tax feature still exist. Why does customer support tell US the users to reach out to QBO developers? We are not beta testers for your software. My sales taxes are a nightmare, and I find that I must audit every single invoice (there are thousands) to calculate sales taxes manually. I have stated this before, QBO you CANNOT mess around with state taxes. Fix your automated sales tax "feature" or get rid of it now.
somehow QB desktop is "broken" as well on sales tax. My sales tax liability report shows incorrect math. I literally have totaled all invoices and double checked rates and all of that is correct. BUT on the liability report QB math is wrong.. example: it shows 23,960.81 in taxable sales @ rate of 6.25% equals 1660.54. But that is wrong because 6.25% of 23,960.81 equals 1497.55. This is the 1st month it has been off like this. Yes, I can adjust it, but what account adjustment would i call that? and how will that effect me later? this is why i have issues with technology. if your system cannot do the math properly how can i trust it? can someone please tell me what to do about this? and QB can you fix your system that you broke. I pay far too much for this kind of errors.
Hello there.
We recognize the urgency and importance of this matter and that this isn't the experience we'd want you to have when using QuickBooks. We want to ensure this will be addressed on time. To determine why your sales tax doesn't calculate correctly, 'we'd recommend performing the Verify and Rebuild feature inside QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).
Doing this allows your system to conduct deep checking inside the system to find what causes the problem. Once it finds unusual behavior within the system, it'll fix the problem through the Rebuild process. We'll gladly input the steps below to get you going:
Feel free to visit this page for more details: Verify and Rebuild Data in QuickBooks Desktop.
After performing the steps provided above, you'll want to ensure your QBDT is running the latest release or update. It will help you experience the program's potential with no problem. Visit this page for more information: Update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release.
Furthermore, we've got these articles to help you modify your data, and keep your current report settings:

This has been an issue with QB for years. I finally gave up and moved on. Sadly, I recommend you do the same.
Yeah. This has been an issue for years. I finally gave up on QB and moved on. They don't care. They won't fix it. So the software is useless.
Thank you for the reply ... However. this didnt solve it. the only error it finds is a error 111 .. the same error it claim to fix every single time i rebuild and its on a paycheck from 2020 (that i find nothing wrong with) .. But that should have zero to do with the math calculations on my sales tax liability suddenly being wrong.
what did you move on to?
I appreciate you for performing the rebuild process recommended by my colleague, jackpot.
I understand that the error seems have nothing to do with the inaccuracy of the Sales Tax Liability report. However, rectifying error 111 identified during the verification and rebuild process is crucial for resolving any potential issues affecting other data in your company file, such as the Sales Tax Liability report.
Given that there are no issues with the paycheck, let's make temporary changes like the date or amount. This approach allows us to address the problem and ensure that the accuracy of the data is maintained while resolving any related concerns.
Once done saving the original details, create a backup of your company file to have secure copy of your data.
Afterward, close all the other running windows. Then, verify and rebuild your data again. If it doesn't fix the error, especially the calculation of the sales tax liability, please give us a short call. We'll need to further investigate this matter and look at the root cause of this odd behavior. Go to the Help menu and select QuickBooks Desktop Help F1.
Post anytime if you have any further questions or concerns about viewing correct data in the Sales Tax Liability and other reports.
I don't think QB would appreciate me advertising for a competitor. It really depends on the size of your organization. Before QB I used a software I2GO hint hint... The I stands for a Invoice. I am a real small organization with all of my people billing through mobile devices. I have had good luck with a product that begins with W. They also have an online desktop portal similar to QBO. The main thing I like? Proper sales tax calculation.
problem SOLVED!!!! YAY!!!! I figure if i can complain on here I can also say Thank You!! The 2 ppl i spoke to with quickbooks (sam & mike) helped me to find and resolve the issues which technically turn out to be my fault in entering a credit the wrong way as well as closing down QB the wrong way. The not only found and helped me to solve the issues but taught me the correct way to do what i was trying to do. It is so easy to get frustrated when something isnt going right .. so i apologize for my irritatedness. I thank you and everyone who helped .. and to others who use QB .. i want to say that there is help. they can and will help. it might be frustrating when an issue comes up but if we can try to think with level heads QB can help us. I will continue using their program
yes, I am having this same issue. I have used quickbooks online for years. Now my Sales Tax Center is showing blank. This is a TOTAL MESS!!! I did manage to pull Sales Tax Liability report that shows the sales tax I owe for July 2023, however, while i was in my Bank Account register, i have now noticed that while the amount and check remain listed in my register, the State Tax Department name for WHO the check was made out to is showing blank and if i try the search feature for the amount of a previous Sales Tax payment, NOTHING shows up. This has got to be fixed!! Up until now i have LOVED Quickbooks!!! I sure would hate to switch to something else. But it is making sales tax reporting almost impossible.
Thanks for bringing this up, @tt0502. I appreciate your patience and effort in performing the suggested solutions above. Let me provide the steps for contacting our support team in QuickBooks Online.
Before that, we understand the frustration of not having this process as anticipated and the significance of getting this fixed as quickly as possible.
We suggest calling our support team to further check the error you encountered.
