Quickbooks migration failed unexpectedly

I'm attempting to move Quickbooks Desktop Pro 2020 from one SSD to another SSD in the same computer. I booted from the old SSD (Windows 1903), ran the migration procedure to write the migration files to a flash drive, then booted from the new SSD (Windows 20H2) and attempted to run the Move_Quickbooks.bat file from the flash drive.  The progress indicator spins for a moment, then the migrator puts up a dialog saying "Quickbooks migration failed unexpectedly."

Similar posts propose just installing a new Quickbooks on the new computer (for me, it's a new SSD), then moving the company file over, but I'm using the last available seat on a client's license (I'm a developer), so I need to transfer the license to the new SSD. I assume the migration tool does that, but as I mentioned, it won't run.

Any thoughts on getting the migration tool to run or, failing that, de-authorizing the license on one SSD and re-authorizing it on the new SSD?

Quickbooks migration failed unexpectedly

I appreciate you for sharing the details of your concern with me, @CMayo.

Allow me to grab this opportunity to help and share some insights on how to get around this issue. Let's start by updating your Windows 10 version to the latest release to isolate this. Also, ensure your new computer meets the system requirements  of the migration to work.

Once done, perform the migration process again. If the issue persists, we'll have to manually move your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) Pro 2020 software. Here’s how:

  1. Install your QBDT software to the new computer.
  2. Create a backup company file from your company.
  3. Restore it to the new one.
  4. Then download the latest tax table after moving your company file.

You can also utilize this link for more details about the process: Move your company files to another computer.

I’d also encourage reaching out to our Support team. From there, they can firmly check your account and investigate the reason for the migration tool fail. They can also further assist you with the migration process. Here’s how:

  1. Click the Help menu..
  2. Go to QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  3. Click Contact Us.
  4. Enter a brief discussion of your concern, then click Continue.
  5. Select either Message an Agent (if you prefer chat) or Talk to a Specialist

You can also check this article for additional information: Contact QuickBooks Desktop support.

Furthermore, I’m adding this link that can guide you on how to handle the situation in case you’d encounter some errors while installing QBDT to your new computer: Fix QuickBooks Desktop install errors .

Quickbooks migration failed unexpectedly

Thanks for your response @JasroV, even if it wasn't the answer to my questions. I was more concerned with the mechanics of moving the license to a new computer and hoped I wouldn't need access to the license key & product ID themselves (since I wasn't sure where to find them), but I did locate them and was able to do the new install as you suggested.

Let me guide you in viewing your QuickBooks license key and product ID, @CMayo.

You can log in to the Customer Account Management Portal (CAMPS). From here, you can view your product information. Here's how:

  1. Go to camps.intuit.com
  2. Sign in with your Intuit Account information.
    • This could be different from what you use to sign in to your company file.
  3. If you see multiple products to choose from, select QuickBooks Desktop.

Also, you can access your license key and product code by entering the email address or phone number through this page: https://emaillicense.quickbooks.com/app/qbdt/licensenumber
