I have a small business and I am the only employee. Due to coronovirus I need to suspend myself from payroll as my business currently has little/no income so I can't pay myself, and I don't want to have to continue to pay tax etc when I'm not drawing a salary.

Hey WLS. Thanks for coming back with your question. To answer it, yes you can suspend it now then reactivate it later when you need it. First, use the post above to cancel the subscription. After you cancel the subscription, you will no longer be able to use the payroll service but your data is still stored.
When you're ready to use the service again all you need to do is return to the Billing and Subscriptions page mentioned above to reactivate it.

Let me know if you have any other questions. I'm happy to answer them.
Thank you for reaching out, WLS.
We’re sorry to see you go, but we want to make the process as easy as possible for you. Before canceling your subscription, make sure to clear any pending payments or forms to avoid the penalty. Also, print out the necessary payroll reports for future reference.
After that, refer to the steps below on how to suspend your payroll in QuickBooks Online.
Once your account is canceled, you'll have access to your data for six months until the end of the tax year. I've attached some articles you can use to access payroll reports and submit quarterly tax forms, as well as some tips to protect your business during the coronavirus outbreak:
Keep me posted if you have any other concerns about your payroll. I'll be happy to lend a helping hand.
Thanks for the response, but as i mentioned I don't want to stop the payroll completely, just suspend it for a few months until the COVID19 issue has got better and business starts to pick up, can i do this?

We are in the same situation now - end of July. We would like to pause the billing of "Payroll" service as we only pay ourselves, and currently the business has no income and therefore no payroll for ourselves (the two owners) right now. We'd like to pause then re-activate again once business starts again. Will we have to re-set up all of our connections to state payroll office, etc? We just don't want to be billed while we have no payroll. Thanks!
Hello, doubbletroubble.
We want to make this easy for you, and the virus has indeed impacted a lot of businesses. That said, I'm more than happy to show you how you can cancel and reactivate the payroll service.
The good news is that you don't have to set up your connections to the state payroll office or any other data again after canceling. Before doing this however, make sure you've already done the following:
Once those are done, here's how you can cancel the service:
After cancelling, you'll still have access to your data for six months. When you're ready to reactivate it when your business starts again, simply go to the Billing & Subscription page again. Then, click on Resubscribe under the Payroll section.

I have 2-3 employees and have no payroll now. I want to suspend my account but be able to get the w-2's for 2021 and resume payroll as soon as business picks up. I don't want to lose data and it will be suspended for 7 or 8 months. Please advise.
