The IRS is imposing new password requirements for those paying federal taxes electronically. They require a 13-month password expiration policy and must be 12-30 characters.

Yes, this happened in late 2019.
My question is... I changed my password in October, and every payroll has worked, paying it through Quickbooks, until today. Today when I paid, Quickbooks told me my password was too long. I have not had this problem before today, and I haven't made any changes since October.
So the only way I can e-pay through Quickbooks is if my password is EXACTLY 12 characters?
It seems the Quickbooks e-payment system requirement of 8-12 characters for EFTPS should be updated to match the actual EFTPS requirement of 12-30? I don't understand why they are different?

I'm here to provide some insight into the IRS EFTPS password requirement issue you're running into. We rolled out a payroll update shortly after the change was made to conform with the new policy. I recommend downloading the newest update and trying it again. It's super easy to do. Check it out:

I also changed my password months ago and never had this problem until I updated to the Desktop pro plus 2020. Seems to be a problem with the Quickbooks update.

We also need to update your password within QuickBooks after we updated it in the EFTPS website.
We have two updates that we'll need to do. First is to download the latest tax table updates. Right after, we can now update QuickBooks to its latest release.
Once done, you can now follow these steps to update your password inside QuickBooks:

I have done all of this. Even updated to 2021. Ready to find new payroll system

with the new 2021 version the chat head told me it was now required to be 14
The program should tell you this and not let you enter it if its not enough
oh yes, I got a hold of your support team.
After he made me go change my EFPTS password again. He then said it didnt work because I only had 12 digets and it has to be 14. So now I cant even change my password at EFTPS because you can only do that every 10 days. If its required to be 14 in quickbooks then it the line needs to tell you that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
nope for 2021 Quickbooks tells me 14. I still cant use it

The chat consultant told me to pick a different password that is QB compliant. They said I could only have 1 special character and only 12 digits for it to work. I tried to change the EFTPS password, I now have to wait 10 more days to reset that password. Meanwhile, my filings are due. I am concerned that i am going to have to file manually.

I appreciate the time and effort you've spent in contacting our chat support agent to reset your EFTPS password. IRS is implementing new password requirements for making federal tax payments electronically. E-Pay gets rejected if the internet password is not updated or it doesn't comply with the new pin specifications. Since you have to wait for 10 days to reset the password, we can create a printed liability check to pay the taxes. We can also contact IRS to see if there are other option to pay the taxes on time. So I had the same issue. I spoke with customer service at EFTPS and she was very helpful and helped me.
I too had changed my password. Then come to find out that the password was too long for QuickBooks. (I think that there should be better notification to the maximum of 12 characters for QuickBooks- and the minimum for EFTPS is 12. So all passwords should be ONLY 12 characters.)
Anyway, she helped me change my password for the second time today. I didn't have to wait the 10 days.
Make sure you are LOGGED OUT.
You go to the log in screen of EFTPS and click on change my password. (down under all boxes)
1. enter EIN
2. enter PIN (4 digit given by EFTPS previously)
3. enter last 8 of enrollment
then continue
will bring up screen for create new password.
Create you 12 character password -(she did tell me that the special character has to be at the END)
Once you enter this and it goes to the next screen saying it has been changed. You have to click on the "login" in the message. This will take you to the login screen and you log in using the new password. Once that is done then the password is actually set. If you skip this step it doesn't set your password.
I was then able to go and pay my payroll taxes and input the newly created password. No issues! She was a miracle worker!
I have yet to find an IRS notice stating the password will expire. If you continue to pay directly through EFTPS, there are no problems. QB is the problem.
PW has to be exactly 12 characters long. EFTPS says 12-30 characters and QuickBooks says 8-12. Just went through the whole ordeal! When I changed my pw to fit both it worked!!đ
