Will Quickbooks change the lower limit on the Texas unemployment insurance rate?

Texas Workforce Commission has sent us a letter with our unemployment insurance tax rate for 2023 which is lower than the range Quickbooks is accepting on the setting page in Quickbooks Online Payroll.  How do we fix this issue?

Let me share some insights about changing Unemployment insurance rate, @t_uday.

Whenever your SUI rate changes, you need to update it in payroll. This keeps your SUI tax liability accurate. If you're unable to update your unemployment rate yourself in your payroll product, you'll have to send in your tax notice.

Here's how:

  1. Handwrite your Federal Employer Identification Number (EIN) on the first page of your tax notice. If you have more than one notice of discrepancy, send each one separately.
  2. Send your notice to us.
  3. Upload your notice in your payroll product.
  • Go to Taxes then select Payroll tax.
  • Select Resources.
  • Select Tax Notice.
  • Follow the on-screen steps to send your notice to us.

Once we get your tax notice, you’ll get a confirmation email with a case number and additional details.

For more details, please see this article: Send in your payroll tax notice.

Additionally, I've shared some relevant articles you can use to help handle your employee and payroll transactions in QuickBooks:

Feel at ease to get back in here if you have further concerns with changing your Texas Unemployment Insurance rate. I'm around to help you always. Have a good day!

Will Quickbooks change the lower limit on the Texas unemployment insurance rate?

Thank you, @Rubielyn_J. I appreciate your prompt response. I tried changing my Texas unemployment insurance rate myself but it is not accepting the rate I have been given by the Texas state.  I then tried to follow your instructions and send the tax notice but when I click on Tax Notice, I get no option to upload and send the tax notice.  I just get some generic help guidance on the right.  Can I send a tax notice now or only during the hours you are open?  Thanks.

Thanks, @Rubielyn_J. I tried changing the unemployment insurance rate myself but Quickbooks did not accept it.  I tried following your steps to send the tax notice but I only got a generic set of links and no way to upload the notice. Can you please let me know what's the issue here?  Thanks.

Will Quickbooks change the lower limit on the Texas unemployment insurance rate?

Hi there, @t_uday.

It's our priority to ensure that you can update your Texas Unemployment Insurance (UI) tax rate.

The UI tax rate is determined by the state government and can vary from year to year. It's possible that there has been a change in the tax rate that has not yet been reflected in QuickBooks Online (QBO). I recommend double-checking it with your state's UI agency to verify the information.

If you find it's correct but unable to enter it QBO, you may have too much accumulated historical data causing this unusual behavior. Whenever you visit a website, it saves some information from the web page in its cache and cookies. These files allow the websites you visit most often to load faster. Not to worry, clearing them will do the trick.

First, let's try accessing your account through an incognito window to rule out the possibility of a webpage issue. You can refer to these shortcut keys to open an incognito window in all supported browsers:

  • Chrome: Ctrl+Shift+N
  • Firefox: Ctrl+Shift+P
  • Safari: Command+Shift+N

Once signed in, go to your Payroll settings and change your SUI rate.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon, then select Payroll settings.
  2. Next to the state you want to update, click the Edit icon.
  3. In the Unemployment Insurance (UI) section, select Edit.
  4. Click Continue if you see a prompt.
  5. Enter your new rate and its effective date.
  6. If you have a surcharge or assessment tax rates, enter it here as well.
  7. Enter your new rate and its effective date.
  8. Click Save.

If it works, I recommend clearing your browser's cache so you can access QuickBooks with a clean slate. You can also use a different supported one.

You may also visit this article for instructions on adding or changing your rate: SUI.

Keep me posted if you need further assistance in updating your tax information. We're always here to lend a helping hand. Wishing you and your business continued success. Have a wonderful day, @t_uday.

Will Quickbooks change the lower limit on the Texas unemployment insurance rate?

I am having the same issue.  QuickBooks online is saying "my rate should be between 0.31 and 6.31%" but my Texas Workforce Commission notice says my new rate is .23%. Since QuickBooks online has the minimum amount as 0.31% it is not letting me put in my new rate.  I tried using an incognito window and it did not work.

Same issue with CT.  We are a credit reduction state so CT reduced employer SUI rate from 1.9 to 1.7 in order to make up for the additional monies owed for FUTA due to credit reductions.  QB won't allow me to be in 1.7%

Let me point you in the right direction for help, @Maria2513.

I can see the importance of changing the SUI rate of your Connecticut (CT) state in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

With this, I recommend you contact our Payroll Support Team. They can double-check your account for why the application does not allow you to change the rate to 1.7%. Our phone support also has advanced tools that enable you to securely share your screen and trigger an investigation if necessary.

  2. Click the Help button.
  3. In the QuickBooks Assistance chat box, select Talk to a human and choose I still need a human.
  4. Select Contact Us.

Will Quickbooks change the lower limit on the Texas unemployment insurance rate?

I'm having the same problem. I'm trying to enter a lower tax rate (Texas workforce Commission lowered it) and it keeps saying it has to be between .31 and 6.31%.  How do I record it? I've already had to pay two paychecks at a higher rate than I should have because I'm unable to change it in quickbooks.
