There's a new Quickbooks software update waiting for you

Up until today, users were able to bypass QuickBooks update prompts but I’ve had two users this morning that have the error below and can’t get past it. I’ve tried a repair install but that didn’t work. I had to do a complete removal and reinstall of QuickBooks Enterprise 20 (R6) and then they can get into the file again

Why all of a sudden can two users not open QB without updating? The rest of the users on QB Ent 20 R6 are in the file working.

Let me provide you information on why you'll need to update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release, paul83.

Intuit regularly launches new updates and releases to improve program functionality. These updates are maintenance or patch product releases that improve functionality and resolve several problems. It's highly recommended that users have to update so they can open QuickBooks and prevent issues along the way.

Aside from that, make sure that users are using the minimum system requirements to ensure compatibility, thus making QuickBooks works without issues.

For more information and reference, you can browse these help articles in QuickBooks.

Reach out to us if you have any concerns about updating. As always, we're always right here to help you if you have are experiencing issues.

I'm aware that Quickbooks releases updates often as I manually patch workstations at scheduled intervals but the user typically has an option to "install later" so they can bypass that screen and continue to work. This morning those two users did not have that option.

Thank you for following up with us, @paul83.

Yes, there is an Install Later option under the QuickBooks Update Service window when trying to open QuickBooks. But the tab is not available when a force QuickBooks update is needed. Thus, these two users need to click on the Install Now button to establish an update and open QuickBooks.

Once these users close and reopen QuickBooks, they'll now have the choice to select the Install Later.

Any idea what would cause a force Quickbooks update for two users? I was able to remove and reinstall Quickbooks for the two users who reported the issue and it seemed to work fine after. Before I removed it, they were running Enterprise 20 R6 and after I reinstalled it was the same version but they weren't asked to update anymore.

Thanks for getting back to us, @paul83.

The two users may have a damaged file that's why the software is asking them to update their QuickBooks file. If that's the case, one of the ways to fix this is uninstalling/reinstalling QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT), which what you've already performed. This will also give you the updated/latest version of the software.

I'm also adding this article that tackles maintaining your software up-to-date, so you always have the latest features and fixes: Update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release.

Please leave a comment below if you have any other issues or concerns. I'll be more than willing to help. Have a wonderful day!

Did the issue persist even after installing the latest QuickBooks update, creditcard?

The update happens regularly to make sure your company file will work efficiently. It's to avoid encountering errors while using the program.

If you're still prompted to install even after doing so, I suggest contacting ur QuickBooks Desktop support so they can check further.

  1. Click Help at the top menu and select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  2. In the Have a Question? window, enter a topic.
  3. Click Contact us.
  4. Hit the Start Messaging button.

I'll be right here if you have other concerns.

Last night we updated each machine one by one to R10 so everything is fine now but I was just curious why we had to do this out of the blue. Typically users can just say "install later" to bypass the update.

Just had another client call me urgently this AM that no one can get into Quickbooks. All users there were on Enterprise 20 R8. I had to drop everything and update each workstation to R10 plus the QB server. It never used to be this way.

Is there a way to bypass the install now screen. And/Or the one that says close quickbooks and tell admin to upgrade.

The reason is I am waiting til QB fixes or finds a work around to a problem caused by one of there latest updates that adds in a secondary login screen.

Thank you for reaching out to the QuickBooks Community, matthewamo. That's an excellent question! The only way to bypass that would be to select install later. Until then, the install screen will continue to be prompted until the update is completed. Please let me know if you have any other questions. My team and I will be here to help you. Take care.

So once it has progressed to regular users to just say close quikcbooks, and the admin only says install and there is no later. We are stuck to have to do forced updates?

QuickBooks:

The question people are asking and what we want answered is why is this update not allowing us to install later? I have only seen this on critical / security updates but on this one I looked at the release and do not see anything critical listed.

We also have clients that are calling us because Quickbooks is forcing the update and they cannot login without running it. We are also having to drop everything to run these updates so clients can continue to work.

This has happened on QuickBooks Desktop versions 20 Enterprise and 19 Premier. The update later option is not available.

None of these files have been updated by the admin or anyone else (users do not have admin rights to run the update)  so it's not due to someone running the update already and forcing the other users to update.

What exactly is in the newest update that is causing it to be forced?

I have worked in QuickBooks for 15 years so I'm very familiar with the update process and do not need explanation on that. Just would like to know what is so important about this update that it is being forced, and why is there no information published about it except this post contributed by paul83?

All of our clients are very frustrated about it.

Yes please respond as to what are the critical updates needed right at what is the EOY for most businesses.

We are an IT company that have numerous customers calling us needing assistance.  We had no notice of this so now we are left to scramble for them on qb behalf.  It's the end of the year and right now I need a work around to avoid updating.  We have a strict policy to never click an update, the last time a user clicked it we were down for days fixing a mess it created.

QuickBooks Desktop versions 19 Enterprise as well.

I hear your sentiments, @125679152, @munchkineva, and @lmasten.

Let me make it up to you by sharing some ideas about the new QuickBooks update.

QuickBooks recently released mandatory patches for both the 2019 and 2020 Desktop versions. In line with this, the following are the important reasons for the updates:

  • Admin users are now able to edit the user ID while signing into the Intuit account. Also, they request access for a Secondary Admin (Intuit account) role.
  • QuickBooks Desktop now supports 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC print and e-Filing.
  • Improved and easier sign-up process for QuickBooks Payments.

For more info about this, please check out these articles:

Thus, you're unable to see the Install Later option on your end.

If you have automatic updates turned on, QuickBooks will download the updates for you. You can disable this option and perform manual updates instead. I know how to achieve this task to keep you back up and running again.

Here's how to do it:

  1. Go to the Help menu, and then choose Update QuickBooks.
  2. Select the Options tab, and then tick the No option for Automatic update.
  3. Click Save when you're ready.

Also, you can send feedback on this. This way, our product engineers can assess it. Here's how:

  1. Click the Help menu, and then select Send Feedback Online.
  2. Choose Product Suggestions.
  3. Enter your comments or suggestions, and then click Send Feedback.

I have another set of steps to resolve your concern, @Leonor.

There are a few reasons why QuickBooks Desktop won't open:

  • If you click your QuickBooks Desktop icon multiple times, sometimes, it won't open. Thus, please allow QuickBooks enough time to load before you continue.
  • Program damage or corrupted files.

I can share other tricks to get past this issue you're getting. First, let's end all the running QuickBooks components through your Task Manager.

Here's how:

  1. Go to your Task Manager.
  2. Highlight or select all applications that start with .qb.exe, etc. file extension.
  3. Select End process, and click End Task at the bottom.

Once done, let's run the QuickBooks Tool Hub to fix program errors and issues. Let me guide you how:

  1. Close your QuickBooks, and then download the most recent version (1.4.0.0) of the QuickBooks Tool Hub
  2. Save the file somewhere you can easily find it (like your Downloads folder or your Windows desktop).
  3. Open the file you downloaded (QuickBooksToolHub.exe).
  4. Follow the on-screen steps to install and agree to the terms and conditions.
  5. Then, double-click the icon on your Windows desktop to open the tool hub.

After that, please follow Step 2 in this article to continue. If the same thing happens, you can proceed to solutions 2 to 5 outlined in this article: Fix QuickBooks Desktop won't open.

Lastly, I recommend backing up your company files. This way, you can restore them anytime in case of any accidental data loss.

I can always help you with any QuickBooks program concerns you may have. I'm just a post away to help you.

Mandatory updates that are discovered by users and prevents them from doing their job until the update happens is overly prescriptive and heavy handed. So users cannot use QB to run their business until they contact their IT partner and schedule time for them to update all installations in the middle of a work day? Not a good way to do business, Intuit. The cost to your users include lost revenue during the outage, angry customers who can't check out because the business can't open QB, and potentially IT billable hours for this last minute, emergency update request. Also, there's a risk that the update will break something, as it has with my clients in the past. This is the first time in my years of IT consulting that a software vendor is FORCING a mandatory update with a current version product. Microsoft doesn't even force mandatory updates for Windows. Thanks, Intuit.

Thank you for that information.  I don't like how this mandatory update has been rolled out but I appreciate you informing us on it. They should take your post here and add it to the "What's new in this update" link on the update box. It would save a lot of people the headache of having to research on their own.

I share the frustration of all on this thread and have quoted @thrivetp in my blog post on this issue. I do wonder if Intuit has been the victim of a security breach (perhaps related to the ongoing Solarwinds incident) and that this patch pushes out some kind of mitigation. I can think of no other excuse for such a heavy-handed forced update process.

One way around this is to delete the pending patch and disable QuickBooks' ability to update itself.
