Is there a way to Bulk Convert "Other Names" to Vendor Type? This is for Quickbooks for Mac

I saw that someone had asked this question for QuickBooks Desktop, but I did not see how to do it in Quickbooks Desktop for Mac.  I have a bunch (and I mean a bunch) of "other names" type that I want to bulk convert to Vendors.  Is there a way to do this in the Mac version of Quickbooks without doing each one manually?

Is there a way to Bulk Convert "Other Names" to Vendor Type? This is for Quickbooks for Mac

I got you cover, @RBlazer.

I have some information about converting other names to vendors in QBDT for Mac. The steps in changing the other names in QBDT are the same in QBDT for Mac. Please note that once this change has taken place, the name type can no longer be altered.

Here's how:

  1. Go to Lists, then select Other Names.
  2. Right-click the other name, and hit Change Other Name Types or Edit Other Name Types. This will open the list of the other names.
  3. From there, you can tick the Vendor name column on names that you want to convert.
  4. Click OK.

Here's how it looks like.

With the above steps, you're able to convert your other name list in bulk. Feel free to download our QBDT for Mac user's guide at this link.

In case you need help with other tasks in Mac, click this link here to go to our general topics with articles.

Let me know if you still have questions or concerns with list. I'm more than happy to assist you. Take care and have a lovely day ahead.

The solution outlined only applies to Quickbooks for Desktops (not Quickbooks for Desktop for Mac -- see screenshot).  The Mac version does not do everything that the Windows version does.   Is there even a solution for the Mac version?

Hi there, RBlazer.

Thank you for coming back to provide additional clarification about what interface you have right now on your screen. I also appreciate you for attaching a screenshot for visual reference.

Based on your screenshot, you can click the "Edit Other Name" as per the steps outlined above when changing the other names in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.

For additional information, you can click this article: Add a customer, employee, or vendor in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.

Please refer to this article to see steps on how you can add, edit, and track sales reps using the Mac version: Add a Sales Rep in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.

Keep in touch if you need any more assistance with this, or there's something else I can do for you. I've got your back. Have a good day.

But the question I had asked has not been answered.  I know how to edit each "other name" individually to change the type to vendor.  I am looking for a solution to bulk edit as previously outlined in the Windows version or some sort of work around.

Thanks for getting back on this thread, RBlazer.

The steps outlined show how to bulk edit the Other Names. Once you click Change Other Name Types, the list will appear. From there, you'll be able to change their types.

For your visual reference, I've attached some screenshots below.

I've also included our QuickBooks Desktop for Mac guide. This contains processes that'll help you in completing your future tasks.

Again, this may work in Quickbooks Desktop (Windows).  This option does not exist in Quickbooks Desktop for Mac.

So it sounds like there is no solution and the recycled “use this option” is what I’m being given even though this thread is about the Mac version of the software.  Again, there are NO options to get the above screenshot menu options to appear in the Mac version.

thank you for the info.  I also want to do this but one or two steps further.

If the other vendor should be the same as one of my regular vendors, do I move them all over and then go back and combine duplicates?

Hello there, cathie4. Thanks for joining here.

In QuickBooks Desktop for Mac, you can merge duplicate entries and keep your lists accurate. You'll only need to go to the list that has the vendor you want to merge and copy the name of the vendor name you want to keep. Afterward, the steps will surely help you complete the process:

  1. Select the entry you don’t want to use, then select the pencil icon to edit it.
  2. Paste the name you copied.
  3.  Once done, select OK.
  4. Click Yes to confirm.

For additional tips, you can check this article: Merge list entries in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac

Also, you may want to check out our detailed guide of the maximum number of list entries

Is there a way to Bulk Convert "Other Names" to Vendor Type? This is for Quickbooks for Mac

Hello, even when logged in as Admin in Single User Mode, after I place a check in the column to change a single Other Name type to Vendor, QuickBooks says "the operation could not be completed and QuickBooks needs to restart."  Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks for joining the thread, @Randawg. I'm here to share some details about your concern.

As of now, we have an ongoing investigation about being unable to complete this operation "when changing other names to a different name type." Our engineer is currently working on it. We appreciate your patience as we investigate this further.

I recommend contacting our QuickBooks Support Team so you'll be added as one of the affected users.

Here's how:

  1. Go to Help at the top menu bar, then select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  2. Select Contact us and then enter that you get Reminder prompts and Continue.
  3. Then choose either to Message an Agent or Talk to a Specialist.

Please check out this article for QuickBooks support hours: Contact QuickBooks Desktop Support.

You can visit our QuickBooks Desktop for Mac guide. This might help you with your future tasks.

I'll be here if you need anything else or if you have any clarifications about managing your vendors. Take care!

Thanks for bringing this to our attention, Chuck570.

You can use the QuickBooks Tool Hub to resolve common issues and errors in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT), and I'm here to guide you.

We're aware that things occasionally fail. To assist in resolving these challenges, get the most recent version of the QuickBooks Tool Hub (1.6.0.3).

Follow these steps to download and install the tool hub:

  1. Close your QBDT.
  2. Download the most recent version of the QuickBooks Tool Hub.
  3. Open the file you downloaded (QuickBooksToolHub.exe).
  4. Follow the on-screen steps to install and agree to the terms and conditions.
  5. Once done, double-click the icon on your Windows desktop to access the tool hub.

For more information, please see this article: Fix common problems and errors with the QuickBooks Desktop Tool Hub.

Additionally, QBDT gives you access to view vendor transactions. This way, you can manage and customize their profile and information.

You can always drop by the Community if you have any follow-up questions about managing vendors. I'll be available around the clock to assist you further. Have a nice day ahead.
