2022 1099-NEC date error

The 2022 1099-NEC standard form has changed the date format.  The blank form has the first 2 digits of the year pre-printed:  20__.    Quickbooks should now only print out the last two digits of the year: or "22".  Unfortunately, Quickbooks is printing "2022" instead of "22".  It is overwriting the preprinted date on the 1099-NEC.  Any idea when this will be corrected?

2022 1099-NEC date error

For context, I have been using QB Desktop since 1993. So, I'm not a rookie and have printed  1099's through QB each year.

We are having a similar problem as note above; unable to print 1099-NEC's for 2022.

Yesterday morning (Friday, 12/30/2022), we were able to print drafts of 2022 1099-NEC for appropriate vendors. We reviewed them; now that we've made the needed changes to addresses, Tax ID's, etc., and go back to print them, we are only able to print for 2021.
Here are all the steps I've taken.
I go to Vendors>1099 Forms>Print/E-File 1099 Forms
I go through all the steps: 1. Select Vendors
2. Verify Vendors
3. Map Accounts
4. Review Payments -  NOTE: "View Included Payments" brings up January through December 2021. I change that to 1//1/2022 to 12/31/2022 ("This Fiscal Year")

 5. It then comes up with a window with heading "Confirm your 1099 Entries" and show "Form 1099-NEC for 2021" without any option to change the year. NOTE: I can view the summary report from this screen, but it comes up with 2021 report. That can change to 2022, but the 1099's are still for 2021

I have reached out to QB Customer service via chat (Jerry), and was told  " I checked with our back end team. And Quickbooks Pro Plus does not have the form for 2022."  HUH???

Intuit, please HELP.

I have this exact problem.  Wondering if I wait until January 1, 2023 to try again. It is the end of the year and there is no one to chat with on the chat line.

Hi, DigsGardens. I appreciate you joining the thread. I can see how important it is to your business to be able to print your 1099-NEC form.

If you haven't already, ensure that you have the latest release for QuickBooks and your payroll tax table to prepare your 1099 form and print it. Once you verify that you have the updated version, yet, the problem persists, I suggest waiting for January and trying printing the form again.

I've also added a link that'll help you with your year-end taxes: A year-end guide for QuickBooks Desktop.

I'm always here to help if you have other concerns or questions. Just tag my name in the comment section, and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

Hi, Andrew. I can see the frustration being caused by the 1099-NEC that prints the full year on your pre-printed forms instead of the last two digits. Let me share additional information about this issue.

I want you to know that there's an open investigation related to this error. Rest assured our engineers are now working together for an immediate resolution. While waiting for a fix, I recommend reaching out to our Payroll Support Team. This way, a live representative can add your name to the list of affected users in this investigation INV-81469. After that, you'll automatically receive email notification of the latest updates.

Once resolved, you're now ready to file your 1099s in the correct format. Learn more about the process from these links:

This is not a dating issue, it's a formatting issue. As the original post states, the IRS form for 1099-NEC is not date specific. In the date box is "20__", which means that the required input is a 2-digit date of "22." QuickBooks is printing a 4-digit date of "2022" in this box. At best, QuickBooks could have me report payments I've made 20 thousand years in the future year of 202022. Again, the issue is not something like a wrong year (21 instead of 22), it's the number of digits being printed in that box.

Again, everything is up-to-date on my version of QuickBooks (payroll and desktop). Both we're updated this morning right before I made my first post.

This needs to be corrected where only "22" prints in the Calendar year blank and not "2022"

I am currently updated to the most recent version of QB Enterprise 2022. Forms cannot be printed as is until the formatting removes the "20" that is preprinted on the IRS form 1099-NEC. Please advise on when this formatting is adjusted to update the application accordingly.

I am the person that called about this issue and spoke with someone at Intuit, who started this investigation. I was on the phone for 3 hours and the issue is not yet resolved.  It is obviously an issue for all Quickbooks clients. This date issue is also happening with QB Online and really needs to get fixed ASAP.  We need to get our 1099's out and this is just not acceptable considering the amount of money you know charge for your software.

Very annoying!!

I spoke with Quickbooks too and it appears they are not going to make any changes to this as it is optimized to work with the forms they sale from intuit. They have said this is approved by IRS:

  • This is working as designed. QuickBooks is optimized to work with the 1099 forms sold at https://intuitmarket.intuit.com/tax-forms/1099-form s. The format of the date is approved by IRS and they will accept forms with a 4 digit date. Even though the date may look like a 6 digit number, all red text is invisible to the IRS scanning machines that process these forms so it will only see the 2022 printed.

Does anyone know for sure if the IRS will accept these forms with a 4 digit year printed on them?

Hello there, @jchiarkas.

Thanks for sharing the information you got from the QuickBooks Support Team. The new date format in 1099-forms is working as designed and is not a bug. That said, I recommend reaching out to the IRS if you still want to confirm from them that the new format of the date on QuickBooks 1099-forms will be accepted.

Additionally, check out this resource to get answers to your 1099-related questions: Get answers to your 1099 questions.

@Kevin_C How does Intuit and QuickBooks design and sell an IRS form that is different from the standard IRS form that is sold by everyone else and design their QB system to only work with their custom form they sell for ridiculously high prices? And never provide any notice that the form that QB will print on is a unique form that has to be purchased from Intuit. This is not an acceptable solution. Forms have already been purchased based on the standard IRS form. While there is not a bug in the design, the design is flawed in that it doesn't allow anyone who purchased the IRS form released here https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1099nec.pdf to have a date formatted correctly for that form.

While the IRS scanners may read the 4 digit date printed by QuickBooks at the moment, the documents sent to vendors will have text on top of preprinted form text.

Please design a solution that enables a 2 digit year printing option into QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise.

My first call was on Monday Jan 2 (I have spoken with 6 different techs this past week).  I was told various things in addition to, "if I used their forms they would work".  I ordered their forms on Monday Jan 2 (although I had already bought the ones that match the IRS website form) and WARNING TO EVERYONE, INTUIT'S 1099 MISC AND NEC KITS DO NOT COME WITH A STATE COPY!  They are also 3 x higher in costs and the shipping was extremely high as well.  I called again and was sent an email with a form to request a refund (but it would only be for the forms if approved and not the shipping)?  Still SMH over this.  I understand there will be issues however the way this has been handled and put back on the client is not right.

Never. They want us peons that still use desktop to have to buy their overpriced tax forms and deal with hours of frustration with their technical support that gets us no where..  They are hoping that we'll all get annoyed enough to switch to online.  I'll retire before I use online.  Worst software ever made.

So to be clear. They DO NOT plan on correcting the issue with printing the year as 4 digits instead of 2 digits and expect us to purchase their forms.

I received this email from Intuit today:

Dear Employer,
QuickBooks Desktop customers using third party forms when printing 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC Forms from QuickBooks may notice an issue with the "For calendar year" box. The box shows 202022 because 20__ is pre-printed on the form.
What do I need to know?
Our products are designed to print on Intuit forms (they are guaranteed to be QuickBooks compatible). Forms from third parties may or may not be compatible.
If your 1099 form stock shows 20__ in the "For calendar year" box, you aren't using QuickBooks-compatible forms. While you don't have to use QuickBooks forms, the year box may print as 202022.
Will my 1099 forms still be processed accurately by the IRS?
The printed text is in black ink on the red form stock. The 1099 processing systems don't read the red text. The IRS confirmed that forms with the following date formats will still be accepted: 22, 2022, or 202022. You can print your 1099s on Intuit stock or from a third party.
This email is to inform you that although the 202022 on the 1099's may be alarming, the IRS will still process the forms accurately. For more information on 1099 forms, please visit our Print 1099 and 1096 forms article.
We hope this email clears up any confusion surrounding the "For Calendar Year" displayed on third party forms.
Sincerely,

The QuickBooks Team

Is this intentional on their part to force us to buy their forms?  I'm beyond angry right now.  I have to send hundreds of 1099's out to subcontractors and the Calendar Year will be INCORRECT because of the incompetence and greediness of Intuit.
