This doesn't work if you have someone that uses QBO along side an integration. This caused issues with our previous PSA when this setting kept getting enabled and we had transactions numbers stepping on one another. We switched to HaloPSA and it submits the invoice to QBO, QBO sends back the tax and the invoice number. It works well if QBO isn't broken. This has been going on for 6+ months and they are/will be forcing users to the new invoice interface with no way to turn it off.
I understand how frustrating it can be to toggle the custom transaction numbers on and off constantly, jb20147.
I appreciate all the effort you have put into finding a way to turn off the custom transaction number in QuickBooks. However, this feature is integral to QuickBooks Online and cannot be turned off permanently. The custom transaction number is a unique identifier that helps to track transactions and eliminate the possibility of duplication. QuickBooks automatically generates it and cannot be modified or disabled.
I want to share a workaround you can implement to achieve a similar result. You can turn off the custom transaction numbers by going to settings.
I understand the solution may not be perfect, but it's good to have an interim measure to address your immediate needs. Let's work together to find a more permanent and seamless solution in the future. It would be greatly appreciated if you could take a moment to share your thoughts and Feedback regarding this feature with our team of software engineers. Your input is precious to us and helps guide the direction of future updates and improvements. By providing us with your Feedback, you are actively contributing to improving our software and helping us create a better user experience for you and all of our other users. So please don't hesitate to share your thoughts with us - we are always eager to hear from you.

The problem is, we turn custom transaction numbers off and it automatically turns itself back on when you edit or add an invoice, as well as an invoice sent via the API. Your solution will not work around the bug, the only workaround is to disable the new invoice interface.
It turns out this issue is a bug with Quickbooks online. If you disable custom transaction numbers, and then open an invoice Quickbooks chooses to re-enable custom transaction numbers without your consent. You must then go back to settings and turn it off again. Intuit...PLEASE FIX BUG!
Hi there, jb20147.
I recognize the inconvenience of going back and forth toggling the custom transaction numbers. You'll want to submit a request to disable this feature permanently.
It's our goal to address all business needs. With this, I recommend submitting this to our product developers. They can consider this for future updates depending on the number of requests.
Here's how:
This website will help you to track your requests. Our blog will also update you with recent events and developments.

I have the same problem. I have contacted support, spent hours on the phone, and submitted feedback. I could never even get someone to acknowledge that it was a bug. Having Quickbooks generate an invoice number is a very simple thing. Why have a setting to turn off custom numbers if that setting gets changed when you open an invoice in Quickbooks online? The new invoice format has broken my integration. It is very easy to reproduce this bug. Please fix it.
I have the exact same problem. This has broken our integration with Quickbooks online since the new invoice layout was released in December. Custom transaction numbers will not stay off. I have tried contacting support, spent multiple hours on the phone and submitted a feedback request with no progress. Quickbooks should be able to generate an invoice number. This is not a complicated thing. I turn the setting off, but as soon as someone opens an invoice in QB online, the setting is re-enabled.
I am having the same problem as everyone else. I signed up for this platform 3 weeks ago and haven't even been able to use it because basic integrations are impossible to configure properly.
I am having the same problem. This is a big issue for anyone that does API integration and needs and autogenerated number. I turned off custom transaction numbers and it works from the API until you go into QB Online and create an invoice from there. It then says auto generated and refreshes the invoice screen. Then if you go look at the settings the customer transaction number setting has been set to on again. I develop software for a living. How can there not be a bug for this issue? Or a workaround. There must be some reason that the system changes a system wide setting without consent or prompting? Can someone at Intuit please take a look. Thanks.
I have given up and now query the api for the last Invoice (DocNumber) that was added to the system before adding a new invoice. This requires you to now make two calls instead of one to the API and single thread your code to prevent duplicate Invoice numbers. Dumb
Hello, @jtstephenson
I completely understand how challenging it must be when custom transaction numbers keep reappearing despite your best efforts to remove them.
It's important to note that we may be anticipating changes to this product behavior soon. However, this doesn't mean that it will be available later.
While this functionality is unavailable, I recommend submitting Feedback so that our product developers will know that this is crucial for your business needs.
Here's how:
With regards to API, you can visit the Intuit Developer page to get the information. This page also contains discussions related to web programming, and there are also a lot of experts in different programming fields.

I'm not sure how or why, but I now have the option to go back to the old layout. Perhaps you can ask intuit to do it for you too. I only was given the option on one of the company files I work with though. The others are still forced to the new layout.
I did the same thing, I am staying with the old layout. Until this is figured out, I aint changin it!
This is not a suggestion or a new feature. This is a bug in quickbooks. I turn off custom transaction numbers and then I open an invoice to view or edit and quick books turns custom transaction numbers back on. This never happened for years, and then you change the default template look and custom transaction numbers automatically turns on it. It is costing our company money now because it takes 3 times as long to work on invoices because we keep on having to turn off custom transaction numbers.
I have opened 2 tickets and you keep on closing them out saying auto incrementing of transaction numbers isn't a feature of the new quick books template....FIX THE BUG!!!!!
I'm also experiencing the same issue with the setting reverting back to "On" and then generating invoices (via API) without any transaction number, which also prevents the emailing of an invoice to our customers.
Seeing this thread and the responses from Quickbooks support and the lack of urgency in fixing this important bug leaves me wondering if I should start looking for another invoicing and payment acceptance provider.
Hello FreshBooks or Stripe?!
Please fix this ASAP. This is a patch / hotfix level release issue. You're affecting a lot of people's businesses every day that you don't fix this issue. And to see that it was reported months and months before the forced roll out of the new layout, which introduced the bug. Pretty weak.
I have created 3 different investigations about this bug with Intuit support and the Developers keep on closing them out as being a built in feature they did on purpose. I am on the phone again with support creating a new investigation number because every time we turn off custom transaction numbers the feature automatically turns itself back on when we view or edit invoices as well as customers.
This is a bug that needs an immediate hot fix and a manger or director within Intuit needs to get in front of these lazy developers and force their hand to fix this massive bug within the Quickbooks online system.
I don't know one system that automatically changes a users settings without their consent. Can someone from Intuit that responds to this thread confirm this is bug and stop towing the company line?
Hi there, jb20147. I understand how inconvenient this is. I want to ensure that we take this matter seriously.
I checked on our list, however, there's an ongoing investigation about Custom Transaction Number Setting automatically turning on (INV-97820) and there are no specific updates at this time. However, our engineers are working together to gather a resolution as quickly as possible.
With this, I recommend contacting our support team for you to be added to the list of affected users and receive email updates.

I am also having this absolutely ridiculous problem. So glad I found this thread because I thought it was a problem with my integration. It needs to be fixed, Quickbooks is absolutely useless to me without it.
I also can't switch to the old layout, can anyone help me with that?
I am begging you to fix this. This is putting at a total standstill.
This thread is a sad joke. I regret building a QBO integration and putting our users in this position.
Real users, who run real integrations, are in this thread correctly claiming this behavior change is breaking our customer's interactions - but the same copy & paste template to go into the app and click the Gear icon and submit Feedback.
Do better Intuit.
Mods - send this thread to a PM in charge of the feature and ask them to stop closing out tickets for this being *intended*.
I am unnecessarily wasting about an hour a day weeding through transactions and manually changing the invoice numbers. I specifically asked about this feature before even changing to QBO and was assured it would work, this was 30 days ago well after the feature was broken.
This is unbelievable that this continues to be an issue. Just ridiculous. And it is now impossible to go back to the old layout. Fix this!
When will this be fixed
I understand the inconvenience this has caused you, ZZalexZZ. Your concern is totally valid, and we will bring it to the attention of management to improve our customer service.

I have been told that the only way to go to the old layout is to upgrade from the QBO essentials plan to the next level plan - and there one has the ability to get rid of this glitch.
Has anyone heard of this?
