Errors Hosting Multi-User Mode

Running QB Enterprise 2018 on Server 2012.

I cannot switch over to multi-user mode from the workstation and I am getting Error H202.

I have tried the relevant help articles.  On the QB DB Server manager it says all is running fine, but on the QB Desktop File Doctor it says "QBDBMgrN not running on this computer."

I have also tried the relevant help article for that one as well.  Anyone go through this recently?

FIXED - So this was a problem for me all day.

It started as the H202 error and not being able to get into multi-user mode, but then I was getting errors on QB File Doctor saying *QBDBMgrN was not running on this computer".  I tried a clean install of qbmanager, manually adding firewall ports, resetting the firewall settings to default, multiple restarts, etc.

After several hours of my own trouble-shooting about an hour and a half with support, we tried renaming the *.QBW.TLG and the *.QBW.ND with .old (so QB would create new files) files and it not only fixed the problem but greatly sped up QB itself.

If you've tried all the help articles it might be helpful to take note of the size of the .tlg and .nd files.  I was told if they are too large it could create errors.

For reference, my tlg file was about 1.04GB and my file size itself was 1.9GB

Good day, @mark_castro.

Your QBW.TLG and QBW.ND files can be found in the same folder where you saved your QuickBooks company file. I'm here to help you locate them.

  1. Open your QuickBooks Desktop company file.
  2. Go to the Home page.
  3. On your keyboard, press the F2 key.
  4. Under FILE INFORMATION, look for the Location section.

Additionally, I've added a screenshot below for your visual reference.

Lastly, I've also included this article in case you'll bump into some errors and issues with your company file: Resolve Problems Opening QuickBooks Desktop or your Company File.

If there's anything else that I can help you with, please let me know in the comment section down below. I'll be always around ready to help.

Errors Hosting Multi-User Mode

This looked promising, but no luck.   Hosting 3 company files on a 2012 server. Up until 3 days ago, multi-user hosting was working fine. Suddenly Friday, only one user could get in at at time on all 3 companies. Logged into server, tried to open a company and got -6175,0 error. Got any users out if the companies and ran file doctor.  Stopped hosting on the server per the 6175 troubleshooting document. Am able to get into all 3 companies from the server console; ran backups and database integrity checks. Try to start hosting, get the 6175 Can't open company file. Try to start multi-user, says it has to close and put in single-user mode first, then gives 6175 error.  I see the message about the server job not running, and that process is not active, but I see no way to start it aside from trying to host multi-user. Even rebooted the server off hours, still get the 6175 error whenever I try to enable hosting.

Before you ask-no updates/installs/shutdown was done on the server between the time it was working and when it stopped.

Explore this reference link

https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/access-data-remotely/how-to-fix-error-6175-0/00/20...

Next, open a dummy file or sample file to isolate the issue. If you can open any of them in muti-user mode, your data file may be damaged. Call and ask Intuit Data Service to fix it. Should you need to resolve in due course, consider purchasing a 3rd party file repair service.

Hope it helps.

I reviewed the 6175,0 article several times before posting this inquiry and tried the steps outlined.  File Doctor would run and come back with 'No problems found'.  I could open each company as single user/not hosted from the server (local QB 2018 is installed), ran backup with verification and database integrity check. These all worked.  (and why would I need a third party database repair utility? Can't Intuit fix their own database??).

After trying the same steps several times (definition of insanity?) and having File Doctor come back and tell me 'turn on hosting' again, I went back and tried it.  Suddenly it worked-all companies now showed multi-user hosting.  I have no idea what/if I did differently, but now it is OK.  This happened a couple months ago and I figured it was a fluke. Apparently not; I just wish I could figure out why QB decides to have a hissy fit and stop hosting.

Errors Hosting Multi-User Mode

I have a possible fix. We have a similar situation, different environment - 5 Win 10 workstations: 4 workstations and one acting as a server only, running database server manager.

Users will all be in multiuser mode all day, then shut down QB end of day and log out of windows. Next morning, the first PC logging into QB will get an error that others are logged in in Multiuser mode - to switch to MuM. Clicking the button fails with an error. Sometimes a 6000 error, but I've also seen H202 today.

Their tech support made a good point asking how they close out of the program- with the X or by File>Close Company/Logoff. They have been using the X. So they suggested using the correct method- File > Close.  I believe this will solve our problem. Hitting the X doesn't properly close the file handles on the server. It leaves them open and connected and gives the weird MuM error. Why it doesn't give an error of too many concurrent users- more than 3 theyre licensed for, idk.

ALSO - dont let the bastards upsell you to Premium or anything else with more users. They'll ask how many users and how many PCs. The second you tell them you have 3-user license but 4 computers theyll try to tell you thats the problem - just upgrade to PREEMIIIUMMMM. Yeah right. I had a tech do that at the beginning of the call and then at the end she again tried to say the "server counts as a user"... BS! They're so full of it. I told her that it's impossible. Of all the many dozens of offices I've set up this way, never have I gotten a 3 user limit message with a server + 3 users on 3 PCs.  If you try to log in a 4th user- of course QB will stop you. So, no, the server is NOT a user. I can't believe they're still running those scams. I thought they had revamped their support a while ago. They're up to their old tricks.

Errors Hosting Multi-User Mode

I have spent the past two days trying to solve this issue. Suddenly my QB 2018 does not start.

I tried to follow all the suggestions captured above but I was not successful.

I tried to open and existing file, I tried to re-initialize, I re-installed QB and so on.

I cannot even open a sample file. The attached is what I get and then gives me Error -6175,0. I run the QuickBooks File Doctor which discovers that "* QBDBMgrN not running on this computer." I checked in the services and it was stopped. I tried to start it manually but it Stops immediately. I have no logs to go by so I am stuck.

Please, where do I get from here?
Thank you

Errors Hosting Multi-User Mode

Hello there, guhy. Thank you for adding a screenshot.

I appreciate you for giving your time and effort to perform and try some troubleshooting steps in order to get this resolve.

I can see the importance of accessing your company file (QuickBooks Desktop 2018) right now. Based on the screenshot you've added above, it says "Administrator Permissions Needed". This means that you'll have to log in to both Windows and QuickBooks Desktop as an admin.

Once done, we can review your hosting settings and make sure to set them up correctly. This will help you fix the error 6175,0. Here's how:

  1. Open QuickBooks on any workstations where you see H101, H303, or H505.
  2. Go to the File menu.
  3.  Select Utilities.
  4. If you see the Host Multi-User Access option, don’t select it. Move on to the next workstation. This one isn’t causing the problem.
  5. If Stop Hosting Multi-User Access is an option, select it.

Once done, go to this article and proceed to Step 2: Check your server settings section. It will guide you through the process.

Also, I'm adding a few details about the QuickBooks Desktop service discontinuation policy and upgrade information. You'll not be able to subscribe to live technical support or any of the other Intuit services that can be integrated with QuickBooks Desktop after May 31, 2021. This includes all versions of QuickBooks Desktop Pro, Premier, and Enterprise Solutions v18. I would suggest checking this link for more insights: What does service discontinuation mean?

If you need some references in the future, you can also check the system requirements for QuickBooks Desktop 2018.

Let me know if you have additional concerns. I'll help you right away. Stay safe and be well!

Thank you for your reply, but…

I’ve been through those pages you show me. I cannot get to those screens since after I start QB I am stuck in those initial screens.

I use QB 2018 on this computer, no other user, for a year. Prior to that I used it for two years on a different computer, when I transferred the license. I never had this issue on either computer and I have not changed anything recently.

I am not sure how do I log in my Laptop and QB Desktop with an Admin account. I’ve always used my user account.

Also, in QB when I try to open an existing file I am asked about the password for the Admin user, and can log in w/o a problem but then it does not proceed.

Thank you

First, I have not herd back from the person I talked with yesterday for more than an hour.

Second, pressing Help and opening QuickBooks Desktop Help does not allow me to capture what I went through so now I am waiting for the next Support Call to start everything from scratch.

This is a major disappointment !!!!

Errors Hosting Multi-User Mode

Hello there, @AM71.

Let me help you make sure your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) is set up on a multi-user network so you can access your company files from other computers.

Before we start, please know some of the reasons why the multi-user mode feature isn't working in QBDT:

  • QuickBooks is not installed on the server
  • Possibly that the hosting settings are not properly configured
  • Firewall or antivirus software is not allowing communication between users' computers
  • The database server is unable to open the company file
  • Windows file permissions are not properly set

To fix this, you'll first need to check the folder permissions on your server computer. This is to make sure the folder holding your company files has permission to be on your network.

Next, make sure that the QuickBooks Database Server Manager is installed on your server computer. This way, you can share your company files with other computers over your network.

Then, set the Windows admin rights to permit you to make changes to your firewall settings and folder permissions and scan your folder using the Database Server Manager to access your file over the network.

Once you're done, you'll have to turn on hosting on your server computer. For the complete guide, I'd recommend checking out this article: Set up a multi-user network for QuickBooks Desktop

Also, you may want to visit this article if you wish to learn more about the tasks that you can perform in a single or multi-user mode in QBDT: Features available and tasks you can perform in a single or multi-user mode in QuickBooks Desktop.

Please keep me posted on how it goes in the comments below. If you have other concerns about multi-user mode in QBDT, I'm always ready to help. Take care, and I wish you continued success, @AM71.

Errors Hosting Multi-User Mode

Hosting multi-user mode can be challenging, and it's not uncommon to encounter errors during the process. Here's a short solution to address these errors:

  • Identify the error: When hosting multi-user mode, it's crucial to pinpoint the specific error you're facing. Check error logs, server response codes, and any error messages provided to understand the underlying issue.
  • Server capacity: One common error is inadequate server capacity to handle multiple users simultaneously. Upgrade your server resources such as CPU, RAM, and storage to meet the increased demand. Consider using load balancing techniques to distribute the user load across multiple servers.
  • Database optimization: If the error relates to database connectivity or performance, optimize your database configuration. Ensure that your database server has enough resources, indexes are properly defined, and queries are optimized. Consider implementing caching mechanisms to reduce database load.
  • Code review and debugging: Review your code for any logical errors or bottlenecks that may cause issues in multi-user mode. Use debugging tools and techniques to identify and fix any issues, such as race conditions, resource contention, or concurrency problems.
  • Error handling and graceful degradation: Implement robust error handling mechanisms to gracefully handle errors during multi-user mode. Provide informative error messages to users, log errors for debugging purposes, and consider implementing fallback options or alternative workflows to ensure uninterrupted user experience.
  • Testing and monitoring: Thoroughly test your application in a multi-user environment to simulate real-world scenarios and identify any remaining errors. Implement monitoring tools to track server performance, database usage, and application errors in real-time, allowing you to proactively address issues.
  • Continuous improvement: Multi-user mode hosting requires ongoing maintenance and improvement. Regularly review user feedback, monitor system performance, and stay up-to-date with the latest technologies and best practices to continually enhance your hosting setup.

By following these steps, you can troubleshoot and resolve errors encountered when hosting multi-user mode, ensuring a smooth and reliable experience for your users.
