QB Desktop 2023 Windows 11 Crashing

ChristieAnn, with all due respect, you are not listening to us.

The steps and information you provided has already occurred.  It is insulting for you to list steps that we have already taken.

This is a program problem.  QuickBooks Desktop is failing.

Either provide a real answer or get out of the way and send this problem up the chain of command.

QB Desktop 2023 Windows 11 Crashing

Same issue on eleven Windows 10 PCs since upgrading to version 23. It's incredibly frustrating to see that, as usual, there is apparently no help from Intuit beyond the "canned" answers that rarely actually resolve anything... and after weeks of dealing with this, still no update fix.

QB Desktop 2023 Windows 11 Crashing

Hi, @dlc092457, @user1927, and @bowtiestudio.

I understand how much you want to resolve this as soon as possible while running QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) 2023 in Windows 11. I'm here to provide more details to help recover your unfinished tasks.

You should be able to run QBDT 2023 specifically in a Windows 11 64-bit operating system. In addition, you can check if you have the most updated QuickBooks Desktop 2023 release version, like R4_101.1.

Here's how to update it to the latest release:

  1. Go to Help and select Update QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Select Update Now, then choose Get Updates.
  3. Once finished, close and reopen QuickBooks.
  4. When asked to install the update, select Yes.
  5. Once installed, follow the on-screen instructions and restart your computer.

If you're using payroll and it crashes, I suggest reviewing your payroll service to know if you're using the active and correct service key.

  1. Close all your company files and then restart your computer.
  2. Run QuickBooks, go to Employees and select My Payroll Service, then choose Manage Service Key.
  3. Your Service Name and Status should be correct and will show as Active.
  4. Select Edit, and verify the service key number. If incorrect, enter the right service key.
  5. Select Next, uncheck the Open Payroll Setup box, then select Finish.
  6. This will download the entire payroll update.

For you, @user1927, I suggest rebuilding your data to fix this issue. If it persists, I recommend verifying your data to check if QuickBooks find an error, then rebuild it until it resolves the hurdle. You can check the steps through this article: Verify and Rebuild Data in QuickBooks Desktop.

When the hurdle persists, I recommend you to check your product registration by pressing F2 on your keyboard to show your Product Information to see if it says "Activated." If it doesn't show as "Activated," I encourage you to register your QuickBooks Desktop. This may be the reason QBDT 2023 is crashing.

If this works, I encourage you to update your QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release to keep your QuickBooks system running.

Additionally, I'd like you to check compatible software and programs for QuickBooks Desktop specific to 2023 and other solutions to fix system issues:

Let me know if you have other software concerns in QuickBooks. I'll be here to assist you anytime. Stay safe and well.

I have experienced various versions of Quickbooks desktop 2023 from Pro to Enterprise all  crashing when you press the escape button.  As long as you do not press the escape button it works fine. I have also noticed that if you have more than one page open and click escape it works like normal closing each page as you would expect until you get to the last page, if you click escape with a single window open, it crashes and Qb closes.  This is for the 2023 version only.

Are there any answers on this yet? I have upgraded 3 clients to 2023 now, both Pro and Premier and they all crash every time I hit the esc button. It crashes during other steps too, but that is the one constant that I can make reoccure. This is so frustrating. I don't understand why Intuit does not have a fix for this.

I will be direct with my thought. They are interested in collecting money and not fixing product. I was able to stop the crashing by not using ESC. Is the X in the right upper corner of the window to close out of it.

I have not had any response from QB.

The only thing I have to to mitigate my frustration is to not press Escape but sometime I forget out of habit and then I have to open the file all over again.

And I believe they don't really care to fix problems with the Desktop version either.   They are focused on their online versions.   I remember decades ago when they ignored the Mac version of QB and didn't do any upgrades or provide patches.      So now that there have been many tech layoffs recently, someone out there with time on their hands should be able to build a better mousetrap!

I don't understand how they can't come up with a solution to this. I have also contacted tech support and they didn't have an answer. They changed some things and told me to reboot and see if it's still doing it. Of course it was still crashing. They sent it to level 2 support and I will have the pleasure of talking with them tomorrow.

I absolutely agree with you. It's like they want to take away the one thing we use constantly to make us so frustrated that we will want to switch to online. I use QBO for some clients, but it is definitely not a fit for so many of my clients.

QB Desktop 2023 Windows 11 Crashing

Hello, @kwalker5. I'm barging in to help you fix this issue with your QuickBooks Desktop 2023 crashing.

Some possible reasons why the program is frozen when opening QBDT are:

  • Your business's name might be too long.
  • QBWUSER.INI file may need to be fixed or missing from your system.
  • Your hard disk can be corrupted.
  • The installation of QuickBooks Desktop or your software files could both be harmed.
  • The Windows operating system may be broken.

We can run the QuickFix from the QuickBooks Tool Hub to fix common program errors. For an optimal experience, use it on Windows 10, 64-bit. Here's how:

  1. Close your QBDT, and download the recent version (1.4.0.0) of the  QuickBooks Tool Hub. Please open the file and follow the on-screen steps to install it. Once done, open the tool hub.
  2. In the QuickBooks Tool Hub, click Program Problems.
  3. Select Quick Fix my Program.
  4. Please start your QBDT and open your company file.

In addition, we have the QuickBooks Install Diagnostic tool from the Tool Hub to automatically diagnose and fix issues with the Microsoft components the program uses. To run it:

  1. Open the Tool Hub and select Program Problems.
  2. Click the QuickBooks Program Diagnostic Tool. Please wait for the tool to run. It might take up to 20 minutes.
  3. When finished, restart your computer and relaunch QBDT.

For a more detailed step-by-step procedure, I'll add this reference: Fix issues when QuickBooks has stopped working.

Moreover, here is a resource for more troubleshooting on how to fix the performance issues in QBDT: Manage your data files to fix QuickBooks Desktop performance issues

Let me know how it goes after doing the troubleshooting steps I've given above. I'll get back here as soon as I can to help you again.

Pressing ESC closes 2023 QBDT.

For several months, every time I press Esc to close a window in 2023 QBDT (as I have been doing for umpteen years), the program closes.  Then, it takes forever for the program to re-open. Such a waste of time! I have used QBDT for 15 years and it is not efficient to have to use the mouse to click the "x" at the corner of each window when I need to close it.   (Plus, I cannot get out of the habit, so I hit Esc dozens of times each day out of habit and the program closes--then the program takes a ridiculously long time to re-open.) I have spent hours performing all of the diagnostic tasks and tools suggested by QB, with no luck.   I have a top-notch computer in excellent condition--the problem is with the QuickBooks program.  QuickBooks - PLEASE fix this problem.

Thank you for your reply, Giovann_G.    I just spent the last 45 minutes trying to follow your advice of  "getting in touch with our QuickBooks Desktop Team to be added to the list of users that are impacted. In this way, you'll get notified when it's fixed."   After 45 minutes of trying to explain the glitch to the representative ("Dovie Mae") via chat, she hung up on the chat.  I am now attempting to chat with a different representative.  So far it is not going well.

It crashes after every time I open it and type in some sort of data.  EVERY time.  And, I use QBox to host my data and they always blame it on that and it is NOT that.  I have moved the file out of QBox and still, same issue.  I have used test companies, same issue.  And the annoying thing is that the data I was working on is lost.  I have done every trick there is in the book to fix this and have not found one.  Buhler?  Anyone have a fix?  And, I am fully expecting the canned Intuit rep answer from the bot like support agents.  Not to be harsh, but please answer with something that actually helps, not the multitudes of fixes I have used.

Yes, I am looking at that too.  And it is an actual accounting program.  Just more expensive and a hassle.  But, Intuit wants us all to move to QBO which is NOT AN ACCOUNTING PROGRAM, just a way for them to make buckets of money of the poor sod who thinks they can be a bookkeeper because they know how to enter a gas receipt as an expense.  I will NOT allow my clients to use it and have grandfathered one in and looking at how to get him out of the loop of paying  $250+/month.  Intuit will rule the world, and really poorly.  Data mine and security hole.  Thanks for letting me vent!

Thanks for joining this thread, iH8theonlineversion. I appreciate your detailed information.

Have you already troubleshot the situation with your QuickBooks Tool Hub? If not, I'd recommend doing so initially. Detailed steps for this process can be found in Carneil_C's post.

In the event your Quick Fix my Program and QuickBooks Program Diagnostic Tool utilities didn't solve the problem with QuickBooks crashing, you'll want to try renaming your QBWUSER.ini file.

Here's how:

  1. Open the folder where your QBWUSER.ini file is saved. This is usually located in the following area - Users/[Your user name]/AppData/Local/IntuitQuickBooks[year]. If you can't see your folder, you might need to enable hidden files and folders.
  2. Right-click the QBWUSER.ini file and choose Rename.
  3. Add ".old" to the end of your file's name (it should be renamed as "QBWUSER.ini.old").
  4. Rename the EntitlementDataStore.ecml file.
  5. Reopen QuickBooks.

If your books don't crash after you've renamed the QBWUSER.ini and EntitlementDataStore.ecml files, try opening a sample company file. In the event you're able to open a sample company, but not your own, copy your file to a different folder and open it from its new location. Intuit recommends using a local folder, instead of a network location. If you can open the file after moving it, your problem might be a damaged folder or folder permissions.

In the event it continues crashing after performing each of these troubleshooting processes, it's possible your company file itself is damaged. You can try restoring to an earlier backup of it if one exists.

If you weren't able to open a sample company file, or QuickBooks continues crashing, you'll want to get in touch with our Customer Care team. They'll be able to pull up your account in a secure environment, conduct further research with you, and create an investigation ticket if necessary.

They can be reached outside of QuickBooks if your books are crashing before you can contact them through the Help menu.

I've also included a detailed resource about QuickBooks crashing which may come in handy moving forward: While working in QuickBooks, QuickBooks closes unexpectedly (crashes with or without an error)

Please don't hesitate to send a reply if there's any additional questions. Have a great Wednesday!

Thank you for this and ALL of this has been done.  Sample file crashed.  CLEAN uninstall of QB and re-install, still happens.  Have used the useless tool hub and still happens.  There is an issue in the program.  Period.
