QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2021 crashes at startup

The likely reason for this is QuickBooks is utilizing dynamic port assignment.

QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2021 crashes at startup

Another super simple fix that may work as it did for me - delete your shortcut and open the file from its actual location ("Open With: Quickbooks Lancher").  That fixed it for me with no need to move the file, or disconnect from the internet or anything.  I then created a new shortcut on my desktop and that works perfectly too.

QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2021 crashes at startup

Update: It has been working fine with a new shortcut for a couple of weeks. But now, it is doing the same thing to a different company file that I didn't need to open until now, even with no shortcut. I was able to open this file just fine, set up bank feeds (they had most connectivity during a version upgrade), and make a backup with no trouble at all. Then, BOOM this same nasty bug starts up.

I have opened it from the File Explorer and by just double clicking and by "Open With Quickbooks File Launcher", and it is still doing it. Not sure what is going on here.

QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2021 crashes at startup

Hi there, @Miss1929.

I understand that you can't access your company file and other basic QuickBooks functions. I'm here to guide you through all the solutions to troubleshoot the issue you've encountered.

There can be several reasons why QuickBooks may fail to open the company file. Some of them are listed below:

  • QuickBooks company file is damaged or corrupted.
  • The same file is opened on a shared network.
  • Using incorrect methods to open certain files.
  • Using the wrong QuickBooks version to open files.

Now, let's see if the problem is with your company file or the QuickBooks program itself.

Follow the steps below:

  1. Open the Windows Start menu.
  2. Type “File Explorer” into the search and open File Explorer.
  3. Search for and find the QuickBooks.exe file. It’s usually in your QuickBooks folder.
  4. Hold down CTRL on your keyboard and double-click QuickBooks.exe. Don’t let go of CTRL until QuickBooks opens.

Furthermore, let's use the QuickBooks Tool Hub to resolve this crashing issue. This tool is used to troubleshoot network issues, company file damage, performance issues, and so on. To begin, launch the Quick Fix my Program tool from the Tool Hub to terminate any QuickBooks processes that are running in the background.

Follow these steps to download and install the Tool Hub:

  1. Close your QuickBooks.
  2. Download the QuickBooks Tool Hub file.
  3. Open the QuickBookstoolhub.exe file. It gets saved in the download folder.
  4. Follow the on-screen steps to install and agree to the terms and conditions.
  5. Click Finish.
  6. Double-click the icon on your Windows desktop to open the tool hub.

From there, let's run the Quick Fix my Program tool.

  1. In the Tool Hub, select Program Problems.
  2. Select Quick Fix my Program.
  3. Start QuickBooks Desktop and open your data file.

If the program continues to crash, you can follow the additional steps outlined in this article: Solutions for When QuickBooks Stops Working.

If the issue persist, I suggest contacting our support team to investigate further the error within your company file.

Here's how:

  1. Click Help at the top menu bar, then select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  2. Select Contact us and then enter that you get Reminder prompts and Continue.
  3. Then choose either to Message an Agent or Talk to a person.

In addition, if you need tips and related articles for your future task, you can get if from here:  Community Help Articles.

Keep me posted if you have any other concerns or further questions. I'll always have your back.

QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2021 crashes at startup

I AM using the Subscription version of QB Desktop Pro and have the 2022 version installed on my fully updated Win10 machine.  About 2 months ago I ALSO started having this crashing problem. So it is NOT your version of QB causing the problem.   Oddly, I find that most of the time I can keep the software from crashing by starting to continually click on the "Reminders" tab in the upper right corner of the Home Screen for a long period of time.  Weird!

I tend to relate the start of the problem with a notice I received about Microsoft discontinuing Internet Explorer.  Wasn't sure at the time why QB/Intuit was telling me this.  Maybe now I know!

As usual, you are giving TERRIBLE, INCOMPLETE INFORMATION.

It is NOT any of these issues:

  • QuickBooks company file is damaged or corrupted.
  • The same file is opened on a shared network.
  • Using incorrect methods to open certain files.
  • Using the wrong QuickBooks version to open files.

There is no file called "QuickBooks.exe " is it called "QuickbooksPro2021.exe". And when I hold Crtl and double click it it does not open the program, it asks me if I want to allow it to make changes to this PC. And then it goes to the install wizard. I am not trying to install Quickbooks. I am trying to open my existing company file.

I am NOT going to follow your instructions because you are not even talking about the same problem.

I cannot be dead in the water and wasting my whole day on trying to fix your bugs. I can't even make a backup first as the program crashes, or if it does stay open, tells me it wants to rebuild the file and the backup failed.

Your software is becoming unstrustworthy. A year ago I would have recommended it to everyone, now I would not recommend that anyone who cares about their data would use any of your products. I am stuck with you for now and hate it.

Quickbooks was super reliable for about 10-15 years.  Now all of a sudden it is an ongoing daily problem.  I think because they have started to used the desktop as an advertising platform.  Way beyond what the software was originally intended to do.  Just a guess, maybe not but that is the biggest change I've noticed that seems to be connected.  I've had luck with restarting Quickbooks multiple times and before starting run the Quickbooks Database Server.   Some workstations link up with no problem and others require to be restarted killing all the related through the task manager before restarting and after running the database server on the main computer that hosts the database.  Maybe the above will help you.  Good Luck.

For me, the Home page appears and stays up for several seconds.  After restarting it 2 or 3 times it will stabilize and stay open to use.  I have noticed that the crash seems to happen about the time (on rare occasions where it stays open on the first try) the internal browsers displays an ad.

FYI in case anyone's interested, the Open Source library that they're using to replace IE can be found here:

https://github.com/cefsharp/CefSharp

184 contributing developers is high. In other words, stability can generally be expected to be good with this one. That said, a glaring design oversight shows up in the CefSharp stack trace provided by @yfegade in the original report.

No app/library that allows unhandled exceptions to occur should be released into production. Doing so represents just about the worst of the worst in poor programming practices. An unhandled exception is one that bubbles up to the top (the code's entry point) and isn't caught by what's called a Global Exception Handler. The irony of it is that such a handler is quite easy to implement in code.

There exist techniques a developer can employ to mitigate this problem, should it be found to be present in a given third-party library (which this is, from Intuit's perspective). Let us hope that they decide to make good use of the stack trace that @yfegade has provided and quickly get to the root of the problem.

I'm not holding out much hope, however. I'm not at all impressed with what I've seen coming from the desks of Intuit developers. The absolutely childish, immature and horrid UI/UX provided by their oft-touted ToolHub is just one of many examples. Intuit actually brags about that? Incredible. They must not be paying enough to attract a crew that knows what it's doing.

Intuit's executives are fixed at the helm of an abusive monopoly.

This worked great for me and allow for more granular control of QB internet access than just disconnecting from the internet. I have suspected for months that this was an issue with the ads QB pushes when you log into the desktop application. Even if you select not to display the ad again it just shows up the next time you connect. I mean I already pay an annual subscription for your product with payroll so I really don't need to see ads offering me 50% upgrades, adding payroll, etc.

I've been having the same problem all summer. QB Desktop Pro 2020 on Windows 10 Home. Mostly I've just been leaving the program running for days on end to avoid having the problem. But auto updates and restarts foil this strategy from time to time. This morning it took 4 tries to get it to stay open.

QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2021 crashes at startup

I got my quickbooks program to work by deleting the contents of update folder . However,  my payroll won't update now, can't make tax deposits or process payroll. Called intuit, they said that they are discontinuing support for 2020 virsion later this year and I won't be able to use payroll now unless i buy Quickbooks 2022 . I paid for my payroll subscription back in February over $500 feel like  it shoud work while my Quickbooks 2020 is still in service.

I'm here to make sure you're able to update your payroll, @HAuto2020.

In QuickBooks Desktop, installing the latest payroll tax table also requires the latest released version you're working with. To do that, please follow the steps below:

  1. Open QuickBooks Desktop and proceed to the Help menu.
  2. Click Update QuickBooks Desktop.
  3. Go to the Update Now tab. Tip: You can select the Reset Update checkbox to clear all previous update downloads.
  4. Select Get Updates to start the download.
  5. Once done, accept the option to install the new release.

I'm adding this article to learn additional information: Update QuickBooks Desktop to the Latest Release.

Once done, restart your computer, then install the latest payroll tax table using the steps outlined in this article: Get the Latest Payroll Tax Table Update.

I'm also including this reference to understand what comes with the latest payroll tax table you're working with: All the information you need about the Latest Payroll Update (22116).

Feel free to leave a comment below if you have other concerns with updating payroll in QuickBooks. I'll be around to help you. Stay safe!

@HAuto2020

You can still use QBD 2020 until May 2023 to integrate with QB Payroll.

@MasterBlaster

RE: The hosts file is just a text file. To edit it open a command prompt as administrator then type:

notepad c:\windows\drivers\etc\hosts

This sounds promising!

However, none of my computers have the folder C:\Windows\drivers\...

Do you mean the file c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts  ?

To search for or find the Windows "hosts" file, it is necessary to enable viewing "hidden items".

QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2021 crashes at startup

This issue that has been going on since June has something to do with data coming from Intuit. I subscribe to QB Desktop and QB payroll and below is the host file I need to run on my machine to get QB to work properly with my company file. I have repaired the company file and installation multiple times with support, and removed and reinstalled the application with support and none of this works for more than a day. The first time you shut down you will likely never get quickbooks to open again without blocking internet access until the company file fully loads. This obviously doesn't work for subscription services.

The below file allows things necessary for my subscriptions to work, but I can't apply patches or updates without allowing the optional items as well.

#Required to be allowed for functionality
#127.0.0.1 logit.api.intuit.com
#127.0.0.1 spcentitlement.intuit.com
#127.0.0.1 alerts.accnts.intuit.com
#127.0.0.1 sci.intuit.com
#127.0.0.1 assets.intuitcdn.net
#127.0.0.1 oauth.platform.intuit.com
#127.0.0.1 http-download.intuit.com
#127.0.0.1 webconnectorclientapp.config-cdn.a.intuit.com
#127.0.0.1 accounts.intuit.com
#127.0.0.1 rebill-sbg.api.intuit.com

##Optional for update and crashes
127.0.0.1 view-localhost # view localhost server
127.0.0.1 qbdtipd.qbinproduct.intuit.com
127.0.0.1 edge.experimentation.intuit.com
127.0.0.1 tcontent.quickbooks.com
127.0.0.1 qb31bgocd.quickbooks.com
127.0.0.1 qb31bgpatch.quickbooks.com
127.0.0.1 trinity.platform.intuit.com
127.0.0.1 appcenter.intuit.com

For anyone from Intuit on here, the issues seem to be centered around tcontent.quickbooks.com and edge.experimentation.intuit.com as far as crashing goes. The company file will open all the way to the home screen and you get an exception crash in nt.dll caused by qbw.exe. This is the point that it usually loads the pop-up window for advertising that you can never block no matter how many times you tell it not to display again. My guess is your embedded browser is crashing on the advertisement push or content in the push since it is a very old version of the browser plugin.
