When I run the 1099 Transaction Detail Report for last year (2020), no data populates the report. The vendors that I would expect to appear have the "track payments for 1099" checkbox checked in their vendor record. I can't figure out why no vendors are showing up in this report.

Hi there @DougSwain,
I’m here to help with your 1099 Transaction Detail Report. In order to get that list populated, you will need to start the Prepare 1099’s process. The reason for this is to assign a form for the Vendors (ie: 1099-NEC, 1099-Misc, etc). Here’s how:
Choosing Accounts for 1099 Tracking and Reports
Once you have worked through adding that to the Vendor, you can cancel or exit out of the 1099 wizard, and your report will populate.
I’ll be here if you have any other questions or if there is anything else I can help with, just let me know!
I also have the same problem.

Now I see that I didn't check off enough ledger accounts in Step 2 (Accounts). The sub-accounts are listed separate from the top-level accounts. I had checked off Professional Fees but not the Accounting and Bookkeeping sub-accounts within Professional Fees. Thank you for your clear writing. -- Doug Swain, age 70.
our vendors are marked for 1099 eligible and has FEIN, for some reason this year the Summary and Detail report are not populated. What changed this year? We have updated our QuickBooks still not showing the detail.
I am not clear with your instruction.
Where is "expenses tab" that you are referring to? Where can I find "Prepare 1099"? it's not under "Vendor" nor under "Reports"
Your issue ends here, @ehh1212.
As stated by my peer MonicaM3 above, the reason why the report doesn't populate data is that you haven't assigned a form for the vendors. Since you aren't able to find the "Prepare 1099" in your QuickBooks software, allow me to provide a screenshot for your visual reference.
Depending on your QuickBooks version, may I know which one are you using? If you're using QuickBooks Online (QBO), you can find it in the Vendors menu.
However, if you're using QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT), you can prepare 1099s by going to the Vendors menu and selecting 1099 Forms, then Print/E-file 1099 Forms. For more guidance, feel free to check out this article: Create and file 1099s with QuickBooks Desktop.
You might also want to read this article to learn which payments should be excluded from the 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC form: What payments are excluded from a 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC?
Please know that I'm just a reply away if you need any further assistance preparing your 1099. Wishing you and your business continued success.
What if your version of QB doesn't have an expenses tab?
Thank you for joining the thread, @ContractorsPlus.
May I know what version of QuickBooks you're using? Please keep in mind that all QuickBooks versions (Desktop or Online) had an Expenses menu. If you can provide more details on your concern, it would be greatly appreciated. This way, we can provide the best resolution based on the QuickBooks version you're using.
Please know you can continue to reach me here with your additional questions. I'll be standing by for your response.
I am not fond of this solution. I use an outside provider to run payroll and prepare my 1099's, but I want to run the 1099 transaction detail report to ensure that what I've entered in QB ties to what is in the payroll system by quarter. Is there any other way to generate data for this report based off the "Track payments for 1099" being checked? If the only solution is to go through the 1099 processing every time you want to reconcile this data this is a major inconvenience. I have other painfully manual ways to reconcile this (download ALL expense transactions then mark vendors as 1099 or not by transaction, then do a reconciliation of what is paid vs. not paid), but I'd like to see the 1099 reports work without going through prepare 1099 processing.
Hello there, Steven41.
If you're using QuickBooks Online, you still have the option to run the 1099 detailed report just make sure that the mapping of expense accounts are correct. To help you, you can use this link on how to run and modify your chart of accounts for your 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC filing.
Keep me posted if there's anything else that you need help with. Take care!
I know this is an older thread but what I find so strange is that 2 weeks ago (November 2021) we pulled a 1099 transaction detail report without any issue at all to double check a few things. This week we attempt to pull one for one of our agents that needs the report to provided to a mortgage lender and the report doesn't pull at all, it's blank....we've been using QBO and doing our 1099s out of it for 3 years now and all 100+ agents are in there and have been the whole time and this problem JUST started since November for us. So all the solutions that we need to start the entire 1099 process just cannot be accurate because how did I have it 2 weeks ago and now it's disappeared. I 110% know they're all checked for tracking 1099s because they've also received one through QB without any issue. I wish someone would stop telling us answers that are work arounds and that someone from Intuit could chime in and let us know how it just randomly stopped functioning. This is also in QB online and mine is always up to date so I know that isn't the issue either. Any word anyone else has found would be appreciated as well. Super Confused~Megan
There are times that local internet cache files stored in the system can cause unexpected behavior in the product, miniprincess.
When a browser's cache storage is full or corrupted, it can cause error messages or not loading on certain webpages in QuickBooks Online. Let's rule this out by using an incognito or private browser:
Here's how:
If it works, go back to your regular browser and clear the cache to delete those temporarily stored files and browsing history. The overtime collection of data can create corruption, however, removing this should fix the issue. You can also use other supported, up-to-date browsers to roll out the possibility of a browser-related issue.
If the same thing happens, I'd suggest reaching out to our QuickBooks Support team. They'll be able to pull up your account and screen share with you.
Let me know if there's anything else I can help you with regards to your QBO account. I'm just a post away from you. Keep safe!
I'm curious about having to prepare 1099s before being able run a 1099 Transaction Detail Report as well.
I see that I ran it last year before we prepared our 1099s.
🤦♀️
Hi there, @Coldham.
Yes, you can prepare your 1099s before running the 1099 Transaction Detail Report in QuickBooks Online Payroll.
Here’s how to get your 1099s ready to e-file or print. These steps walk you through organizing your contractors and payments so your filings are correct.
If you want to see what you’ve paid your contractors, you can run 1099 reports.

If go to apps and features and run a repair on quick books 2021 it fixed the problem for some reason. Have no idea why but it worked.
Where is the expenses tab as noted below? I have the Desktop Pro 2020. I'm not able to go into my 1099 detail like normal.

I don't have a 1099 tab under my vendors. Not able to run my 1099 report this year. Last time I ran it was last January.
Hi there, @Klarsenault1. I'll show you how to pull up a 1099 report.
The steps provided by my colleague are for QuickBooks Online. To perform these in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT), make sure to enable the 1099 option from your preferences. Doing this will allow you to access it from the Vendors menu.
Here's how:
Once done, you'll be able to see the Print/E-file 1099s option under the Vendors menu. Also, make sure that your QBDT is updated. Then, follow these instructions on how to prepare the form:
Lastly, here's the steps on how to review your 1099 reports:
I'm always around if you need further assistance with running your 1099 reports. It's my pleasure to help.
did you ever figure this out? same thing happening to me right now. I was on the phone with QB support for over 30 minutes- cleared cache and everything they told me to do. The boxes are still not checked. It's going to take days to go through and recheck all of the boxes. They offered no further help and went as far as saying they'd never heard of this problem. It's interesting that we pay them monthly and pay to file 1099s on a deadline but they are no help and don't even offer a credit (I asked at the end).
This isn't the kind of experience we want you to have, @mccrayagency.
I appreciate you for performing troubleshooting steps to isolate the issue with your 1099s being unchecked. Let me now guide you towards the appropriate support to resolve this matter.
