Create 1099 reports in QuickBooks

SOLVEDby QuickBooks141Updated November 07, 2023

Learn how to run 1099 reports in QuickBooks that show who needs 1099s, payment totals, and more.

Here's how to run these reports to understand which contractors need 1099s in QuickBooks Online or QuickBooks Desktop.

QuickBooks Online

See all your 1099 vendors:

  1. Go to Reports (Take me there) and search for Vendor Contact List.
  2. Select Customize.
  3. Under Rows/Columns select Change columns.
  4. Select the Track 1099 checkbox.
  5. Select Run Report.

See 1099 totals, accounts, amounts, and other details:

  1. Go to Reports (Take me there).
  2. Search for 1099 Transaction Detail Report, 1099 Contractor Balance Detail, or 1099 Contractor Balance Summary.

See all payments to vendors that need to go on a 1099:

  1. Go to Payroll then Contractors (Take me there)
  2. Select Prepare 1099 and select Confirm info and get started until you get to the window called Review receiptants and payments totals.
  3. Select the dropdown to choose Reportable payments only.
  4. Now you can see which contractors qualify for a 1099. To see excluded payments, from the dropdown choose Non-reportable payments only. You can also select the amount in the Reportable total to see a 1099 Transaction Detail Report. If contractors are missing or amounts are wrong, see Fix missing contractors or wrong amounts on 1099s.

If you mapped your transactions to prepare your 1099s, create a 1099 Transaction Detail Report and use the filters to see more details.

  1. Go to Reports (Take me there).
  2. Search for 1099 Transaction Detail Report.
  3. Select Customize then Filter.
  4. From here you can choose 1099 box, Type of Contractors or Box Threshold.

QuickBooks Desktop

QuickBooks Desktop has two reports to help you review your 1099 information.

  • 1099 Summary: Shows the 1099 box totals and allows you to filter by 1099 vendors, accounts or thresholds.
  • 1099 Detail: Shows the details of each check paid to vendors with additional filters for 1099 vendors and accounts.
  1. Go to Reports (Take me there) then select Vendors & Payables.
  2. Select either 1099 Summary or 1099 Detail.

Note: Reports will default to the Last Calendar Year, so be sure the report is set up for the correct date range next to Dates at the top of the report

The reports will show which contractors qualify for 1099s, if contractors are missing or amounts are wrong when preparing your 1099s, see Fix missing contractors or wrong amounts on 1099s.
