Can you add a tip option in Invoices? I know it is possible in Sales Receipts, but I need it in my invoices.

Thank you so much for your quick reply. If I follow your instructions will it offer them the option of a write in tip? Or does it have to be a set amount that we add to the invoice? If it's a set amount we can do that simply by choosing "Other" and adding an automatic gratuity. We only add an auto gratuity to our larger events, for daily deliveries we want to include a way for them to write in a tip for the driver if they so choose to.

Another question on a semi related subject regarding writing in an amount. We often ask for a 50% deposit. Currently when we send an invoice with Payments we just setup they have to pay the full amount. Is there a way to set a percentage to pay? Or do we have to start splitting the invoice in half to achieve this?

We love getting automatic deposits and getting rid of our CC machine, but it has come with many more new problems.

Thanks for getting back here, @pffmanager. I've come to provide further information about your concern.

Yes, in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT), when you add the tip as a line item in the invoice, you'll have to set the specific amount of that item. To give you detailed guidance in creating an invoice in QBDT, please check this article: Create an invoice in QuickBooks Desktop.

For your second concern, if you're using the QBDT Enterprise version, you can setup a percentage to pay by creating payment terms. If not, you can split your invoice in half to achieve the 50% payment deposit. For more information on receiving an invoice payment, feel free to visit this link: Record an invoice payment.

You might also want to use the Undeposited Funds account when receiving invoice payments that hold your customer's deposits and combine them later into a single record in QBDT.

I'm always around in case there's anything else you need about adding tips and setting up a percentage to pay in QBDT. Don't hesitate to leave a reply below. I got your back.

Thumbs Down to QB. You are the only invoicing provider that does not allow for a tip optional line for payment by a customer.

Do you not understand how confrontational it is to ask a client what they would like to pay in advance.

Can you add a tip option in Invoices? I know it is possible in Sales Receipts, but I need it in my invoices.

So wait. Let me get this straight, I send an invoice for deposit (invoice #1). I complete the services requested and send the Final Invoice (invoice #2).
Now, if they want to include a voluntary tip, I am required to ask what that amount is so I can send it in an additional invoice (invoice #3).

How hard is it to add a voluntary tip section to every invoice sent out by the company? It is voluntary to pay it, leaving it to the customers  discretion to pay it… Way better then the awkward, “how much do you want to tip?” conversation…

Hi there, Nick Bolen.

I've checked your posts and found out that you've posted similar questions twice. The duplicate one was already answered by my colleague, LeizylM.

You can view her answer through this link where she explained how the tip option works in the program: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/reports-and-accounting/re-is-there-an-easier-way-t....

I'm also adding this article to help design and personalize the invoices that you send to your customers: Customize sales forms.

Hi tracyandsonspm!

I understand that you want to add a tip option to invoices. I'm here to assist you.

Currently, aside from the sales receipts, you can accept tips using the GoPayment mobile application. Just make sure you're using an updated app and card reader. Please check these articles for more details:

With regard to the invoices, I suggest you send feedback about this to our developers. Let them know that you need such an option. Go to the Gear icon and select Feedback.

I added this link if you need help in running reports: Run reports in QuickBooks Online. This includes articles on how to customize and save reports.

Post again here if you need more help in receiving payments. Take care!

I found a work around for a customer initiated tip payment.  No thanks to intuit

In your quickbooks setup for your invoice email, include a some language appropriate to your business that tips are not expected but can be left, bla, blah, by EDITING THE PAYMENT AMOUNT on the click and pay screen.

I sent an invoice to myself.  On the payment options that show up on the click and pay page, where you choose which card you want to use, there is a small field called "edit amount" next to the total. I clicked on it, added a few dollars to my invoice.  It paid and all the money went through. Quickbooks online showed an overpayment, which you can account for later in a tip invoice or however you choose.

Hi there, byleung.

Currently, the option to modify the default tip rates is unavailable.

As a workaround, you can use the Other option to enter a different one.

In addition, you can also add a tip when sending a sales receipt. I've added this link for more information: Add tips to sales receipts.

Keep me posted whenever things happen. I'll be around to help you out!

Thanks for responding, I can't see anything on your attached screenshot. My issue is that I don't accept CC payments, just ACH, Venmo, Zelle, Chase Quick Pay etc. Is the tip optional only available when they pay via ACH?

Thanks for joining this thread, @morgybeez. I can share some information about the tip option when creating an invoice in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

At this time, the option to use the tip feature when creating an invoice is unavailable. I suggest generating a service item that you can include as a tip in your invoice.

Let's first choose an account to track the tips. QBO creates a tip account automatically once you turn on the Tips feature. You can change it by following the steps in the Change default tips accounts section. You can also set up your own account, and ensure that you're using a liability account.

Then, let's associate the account to the service item / tip:

  1. Go to the Sales menu and select Products and services tab.
  2. Click the New button and select Service.
  3. Name the service as Tip, and then choose Undistributed Tips/the account you've created under the Income account.
  4. Click Save and close.

Once done, you can now add this service item to your invoices. Here's how:

  1. Click the + New button, and then select Invoice.
  2. Select a customer.
  3. Enter the necessary information.
  4. Add the service item or Tip and enter the Amount.
  5. Select Save and send or Save and close.

You can also check out this article on how to add tips to a sales receipt.

Please refer to this link for additional information about paying out tips to employees: Share tips with your team. It includes the process of giving tips before depositing the final amount into the employees' bank accounts.

You can also send feedback so our concerned Product Developers team can take action to help improve your experience. Please know that the more users request this idea, the greater the chances it’ll be part of future enhancements. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon, then select Feedback.
  2. Enter your suggestions, then select Next.

I'm just one click away if you need a hand with adding tips to your invoices or anything QBO related. I'm always here to ensure your success. Have a good one!

Still not an option for QB Online, seems simple enough and VERY beneficial to your customers that are for ex: in the service industry! Would love to see this added!

WHERE DID THE ONLINE TIP FUNCTIONALITY GO? Why was it removed?! Our business was thrilled that when customers go online to pay their invoice, there was FINALLY a place where a tip was asked for. AND NOW, it is gone! Why?

Hi there, @Sheldon K

Having a tips section for customers to enter when they pay their invoice online would benefit your business. I'd recommend reaching out to our QuickBooks Payments support. They can verify if this feature is already available.

You can contact them through your QuickBooks Online (QBO) account. Here's how:

  1. Click the (?) Help icon in the upper right-hand corner of the Dashboard.
  2. Select Talk to a Human.
  3. Enter a short description of your concern and press Enter.
  4. Click I still need a human.
  5. Select Contact Us to connect with our live support.
  6. Choose Get a callback.

To reach us on time, our Live Help is available from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM on weekdays and 6:00 AM until 3:00 PM on Saturdays. For more details, refer to this link: Contact Payments.

Moreover, you can record an invoice overpayment as a tip in QBO.

You can always visit us here in the Community should you have any further questions about recording invoice payments, @Sheldon K. I'll be around to help you.

We are also really wanting the ability to add unprompted tips for customers when they are paying invoices.

I am not going to ask my customers to tip, that is beyond tacky.

I voted on all three feedback feature request links listed on a previous post.

Throwing in my two cents yes I think this is a much needed feature.. how can nearly every single competitor offer this and QuickBooks out of all of them doesn't? Is this not one of the most basic essential option?

Can you add a tip option in Invoices? I know it is possible in Sales Receipts, but I need it in my invoices.

I have the opposite problem -- we have the Tips option turned off in Settings, and it doesn't show up when we create and save an invoice, but then when we re-open (or the customer opens) the invoice, the TIP line suddenly shows up.

We don't want the Tip line showing on invoices.

I've contacted QB Support multiple times, but so far no one has been able to get rid of the unwanted Tip line on invoices.

So be sure that you want it if you enable that feature -- you might not be able to get rid of it.

Can you add a tip option in Invoices? I know it is possible in Sales Receipts, but I need it in my invoices.

Hi there, BikenBooks.

I appreciate you for coming back to the QuickBooks Community and for providing details on what you've done. With this, I'll be sharing troubleshooting steps to ensure you can get rid of the unwanted Tip line on invoices. Beforehand, may I ask how you reopened or edit the invoice? I'd also appreciate it if you can add a screenshot on your end so I can present an accurate solution.

For now, I recommend logging in to your QuickBooks account using a private browser. Then, try to access or reopen your invoices from there. This is to rule out the possibility of a webpage issue, and private browsing doesn't store local files or cache.

Use these keyboard shortcuts based on the browser you're using:

  • For Firefox or Microsoft Edge, press Ctrl + Shift + P.
  • For Chrome, press Ctrl + Shift + N.
  • For Safari, hold down Command + Shift + N.

If it works in incognito, you have to clear the cache of your regular browser. This removes the history or log of sites so you can start with a clean slate. You can check this article to see the steps: Clear cache and cookies to fix issues when using QuickBooks Online.

If the steps above didn't work, use another supported browser as an alternative.

Lastly, you may refer to this article to see details on how the Sales page provides you a great at-a-glance view of the status of sales transactions like open and paid invoices: View sales transactions.

This tips feature was working for me in February and March and then it just stopped working. I have sent test invoices via email to myself, and confirmed the tips feature is no longer showing. I have made several called into QB customer service and nobody seems to know how to fix it. In fact, most representatives I have spoken to seem to be completely unfamiliar with this feature all together. This is beyond frustrating that nobody seems to have a solution to this. I was so happy to finally have this feature and now it seems to be gone!

Welcome to the QuickBooks Community, dishedbyrachel. This isn't the kind of feeling that I'd wish you to have and I can see how the Tips feature is essential for your invoices. With this, I'll ensure to share further details on how Tips works in QuickBooks.

As mentioned above the option to use the tip feature when creating an invoice is currently unavailable. You can only use the said option in the sales receipt. Then, creating an item to add as a tip to your invoice is the workaround you can perform.

Furthermore, you can only use tips with the New Airy template. If you want to use another template, try recording a tip or gratuity in QuickBooks Online.

Additionally, you can also send feedback to submit a request about using the Tips feature in the invoice. Any recommendations are sent to our engineer for consideration in future updates. To do this, I recommend going to the Gear icon in QBO and choose Feedback.

Lastly, you may refer to this article to see details on how the Sales page provides you a great at-a-glance view of the status of all your sales transactions: View sales transactions.

The EXACT thing has happened to us!  I was so happy to finally have the tip OPTION on the invoice payment...now it is gone.  I was wondering why we haven't received tips lately.  Please keep us updated if you find a solution.
