How can I delete a Contractor?

Thank you for posting here in the Community, @mikefalev.

To delete a worker from the contractor's list, you'll need to make it inactive in QuickBooks Online. I'd be glad to walk you through the steps.

Here's how:

  1. On the left pane, click Expenses.
  2. Click the Workers tab.
  3. Select the contractor you need to delete/inactive.
  4. On the top right, click the small drop-down arrow, then hit Make as inactive

You can use this article for detailed steps on how to delete contractors: Add, edit, and inactivate contractors.

For future reference on how to set up Direct Deposit (DD) and other related topics, please visit this article: Contractor direct deposit. Paying your contractor via DD makes your work faster and more efficient way of paying them instead of cash or check.

How can I delete a Contractor?

Hi @DanetteSC,

I'll lend you a hand and take care of this query for you.

Based on what's mentioned above, you're done with the first step, which is to create a profile for your contractor. Before you proceed further, ensure that your payroll service is set for direct deposit

Once done, follow the steps below to create direct deposit payments for a contractor:

  1. Go to the Workers tab.
  2. Hit the Contractors tab.
  3. Next to the contractor's name, tap the drop-down menu, and choose Pay with direct deposit
  4. Type in the amount.
  5. Select the expense account that you want to track the paychecks in QuickBooks Online.
  6. When done, press Save & Send

In case you have other questions with the direct deposit setup process, see this article: Set up and manage your direct deposit for contractors. Click the QuickBooks Online Payroll link to view the complete steps.

I'd also suggest checking out this article: How to check your direct deposit setup status. Go to the Check the status of your direct deposit section, and see the steps under QuickBooks Online Payroll.

I'll be around should you need further assistance. Post a comment below, and I'll get back to you.

How can I delete a Contractor?

Hello and thanks for the help,

I have an inactive contractor that i cannot remove from the list of the "Review your contractors' info" page. I can't move forward even because the inactive contractor is there. The contractor was an error so it's not needed. Can you please help? Here is a screen shot:

Good evening, @adolfo

Thanks for reaching out to the Community for support. I appreciate that you took the time to include a screenshot. It's very helpful in finding a solution for your concern. I'm happy to help you sort this out.

From looking at your screenshot, it looks like you're on the 1099s screen. If that's correct, does this contractor have any transactions connected to them? You'll need to ensure that the contractor doesn't have any transactions associated with them. If they have any transaction connected to them, you would still be required to send them a 1099 even if this contractor was inactive.

To check for transactions, use the steps I've included below.

  1. Open the Contractors menu.
  2. Under the Active dropdown, choose Inactive
  3. Select the contractor, then the Payments tab to see if the transactions.

That's all there is to it. Please let me know if your contractor has any transactions.

I'll be sure to keep an eye out for your reply. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Feel free to reach out to the Community at any time. Take care!

I also wish to delete a contractor so that I can add it manually from scratch (since the email link expired and there's no way to resend). Deleting is very different from making it inactive. Is not possible to delete entirely? Please request that feature, if not.

Thanks,

How can I delete a Contractor?

Good evening, @jimcee

Thanks for chiming in on this thread. I'd be more than happy to provide you with other details about deleting a contractor within your QuickBooks Online account.

The only way to do this in QBO is to make the contractor inactive. There isn't a way to delete the contractor completely. However, you can submit feedback to our Product Developers so they can consider adding this option in the near future.

Review our Updates site to keep up with what's new in the system.

I hope this helps answer your question. I'm only a post away if you need me again. Take care!

How can I delete a Contractor?

I put a contractor and inactive and now need to mark them as active, how do I do that?  The contractor doesn't show up in contractors or vendors.

How can I delete a Contractor?

Welcome to the QuickBooks Community, @crtyler. I'm happy to walk you through the process of activating an inactive contractor in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

When you inactivate a contractor, their associated transactions won't be deleted. If you want to reactivate them, please see the steps below:

  1. Go to Payroll and select Contractors.
  2. In the Active dropdown, click Inactive.
  3. Select the contractor.
  4. Click the Inactive dropdown and select Mark as active.

Furthermore, you may prepare to make your 1099s by utilizing reports from QBO. Here's an article for your guide on how to run them to determine who you need to file 1099 for: Understand which contractors need 1099s.

Should you have additional questions concerning your contractors, please don't hesitate to post in the Community. We'll ensure to respond right away to your questions. Stay safe and have a wonderful day!

How can I delete a Contractor?

You might have the most recent interface update, which is why your Contractor page appears slightly different, guyh73. Let's work together to fix this contractor display error and ensure you can update their status and personal details.

You can change the contractor's email address if you enter their information in QuickBooks manually. If you select the Email this contractor checkbox when adding them for them to fill out their information, only they can update their details. We recommend contacting them directly to edit their profile.

If you manually enter the contractor's data and you're unable to edit their email address, this error is likely caused by the browser. We can perform some troubleshooting steps to isolate this. Start by pulling up your QuickBooks Online (QBO) account using a private browser (incognito). Here's how:

  • Press Ctrl Shift (Google Chrome)
  • Ctrl Shift (Firefox)
  • Control Option (Safari)

Once signed in, go to either the Expenses or Payroll menu to access the Contractors tab. From there, perform the following steps to inactivate a contractor and edit their email address:

  1. Choose the contractor you need to delete/inactive.
  2. Under their name, click the Active dropdown.
  3. Select Mark as inactive. The "(deleted)" word will be indicated beside their name.
  4. Go to the Details tab and click the Pencil icon to edit their Personal details80.PNG
  5. Change their email address in the Email field.
  6. Click Save.

If you're able to do so without interruption, return to your default browser and clear its cache. After that, log out and then log back into your account. This will refresh the system and remove older data that causes viewing and performance issues.

However, if this matter continues, I'd recommend using other supported browsers.

Whenever you're ready, create and file your 1099s with QuickBooks Online.

Also, I'm including this article to help answer the most commonly asked questions about 1099s in QuickBooks: 1099 concerns.

Please feel free to get in touch whenever you have further concerns about contractor details and tracking their transactions in QuickBooks. We in the Community are always ready to help you out.

How can I delete a Contractor?

Hi there, I am trying to delete a contractor who has unpaid bills, but I checked under their account and all transactions, and there are no unpaid bills. What can I do here? Appreciate your help. Thank you.

How can I delete a Contractor?

Welcome to the Community, @LaurenATCHD-1234.

I'll help you delete a contractor and avoid the error message that your vendor has unpaid bills, even if nothing shows in their account.

Before we proceed with troubleshooting, I recommend checking the date of the transaction list. There can be unpaid bills transactions prior or after the date range of the list.

If there's none, we can proceed with browser troubleshooting. The stored files in your browser are typically the source of unexpected behavior or failures in QBO. Your cache saves the files from many websites you visit, so you can quickly load the pages the following time. The browsing speed of websites like QBO may be impacted if the cache is retaining too much data.

It's a good idea to check for issues brought on by a full cache when browsing anonymously because doing so prevents the cache from recording your browsing data. You may also try to use other browsers.

  • Chrome: Press Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox: Press Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: Press Command + Shift + N

If the steps above will not work, you can use supported browsers as an alternative.

If the given procedures are successful, I advise you to clear the cache in your browser to avoid utilizing outdated forms, safeguard your data, and improve the performance of our programs on your computer.

If the issue persists, I recommend contacting our Customer Care team. You can request for a screen-sharing session so they can investigate further the reason of this issue.

Here's how:

  1. Sign in to your QuickBooks Online company.
  2. Click Help (?).
  3. Choose either tab to get started:
  • Assistant: Get quick, personalized answers. Select a suggested option or type a question or topic you need help with. If you decide you need further help, you can still Talk to a human.
  • Search: Search the QuickBooks Online knowledge base directly, or select Contact Us and choose a way to connect with us:
    • Start a chat with a support expert.
    • Get a callback from the next available expert.
