How do I remove the "sales tax" line from invoices when a customer does not pay sales tax?

I recently converted from a desktop version of quickbooks to quickbooks for Mac.   I used to have two invoice templates, one for those customers not paying sales tax, thus no sales tax line on the invoices, and one for those customers paying a sales tax.    

Within the layout designer, I cannot figure out how to remove the sales tax line from the invoice even though the customer has been identified as not paying sales tax.

Any help would be appreciated.

If Mac is anything like windows, you can not, if sales tax is turned on it will fill in the sales tax line with a zero amount.

If you remove the sales tax block from the footer of the invoice, QB just adds a line in the description area for sales tax and a zero amount

There is a cheat in windows, bring up the invoice template for a non sales tax invoice, right click on the sales tax title and data blocks and select properties, select font and change the color to white, do that for the borders too - QB will still print the sales tax but it will print white and not be easily seen - assumes you are using white paper of course

If you:

1) are on a Mac

2) Never charge sales tax

Try this:

First, just to be thorough...Go to the Customer:Job information under Lists and make sure you UNcheck the box about sales tax under the Additional Info tab

Go to the Layout Editor, and make sure you UNcheck the box regarding sales tax in the Fields editor


FINALLY, I found my solution in the Preferences area. 

Choose Preferences from the QuickBooks drop-down menu in the top left corner of your Mac.

Choose Sales Tax (5th item, 3rd row)

UNcheck "customers are charged sales tax".


This will only work if your WHOLE BUSINESS is non-sales tax like ours (consulting). I hope this helped!

Toggle off the taxable icon (%) at the bottom of the form window.

Bottom of which form window do you refer to? On my invoice, i have entered my items but the gst item contines to display " GST on sales ..." even though i deleted that line and have not selected it.

That doesn't work.   It still shows on the invoice even though I have indicated that this customer is not taxable.   Any other ideas?

Yay! thank you so so much! I was pulling my hair trying to get rid of that line for all the non-taxable items. I kept getting my non profit customers asking me if I am charging tax. Sure that's ridiculous when it says 0%, but it's still clunky and unnecessary.

I think I found a solution on QB for Mac:

1. In Preferences > Sales Tax, leave the "customers are charged sales tax" box CHECKED. (I know this doesn't make sense - just go with it.) Make sure "most common sales tax" pull-down is set to "no tax".

2. On the invoice window, in the bottom row of 5 boxes, I have the "%" icon toggled to light grey (as opposed to dark grey). Fiddle with it until it's the lighter color.

3. Below my items on the invoice, there's a pulldown that says "no tax", and next to it says 0.0%. Leave it be, even though next to it there's a line item for 0.00 above the total. Again - just go with it.

4. Now, when I go to preview or print my invoice - voila, no tax!

Why did this work? How did I get it to work? I have no idea. But hopefully it will work for you. Good luck.

This was the one that did the trick. Toggling the % box at the absolute bottom of the invoice form to off

It's nice to see you in the Community thread. I can help remove the sales tax line in an invoice on a PC/Windows.

 

All you need to do is turn it off in the company preferences if you won't be charging a sales tax. Let me show you how: 

  1. Go to Edit menu and click Preferences.
  2. Select Sales Tax on the left side panel and click the Company Preferences tab.
  3. Choose No in Do you charge sales tax?
  4. Click OK when done.

Half of my work is TAXABLE products. The other half is NON TAXABLE services.

 

What's the best way to hide the "Sales Tax" line item at the bottom of the description for NON TAXABLE client Invoices?

 

I'm using a PC/Windows with the desktop version of Quickbooks.

 

@Anonymous If I turn it off in Preferences, it turns off the Sales Tax line for ALL my clients, which is not an option for my business.

You are correct, ImBarbaraD.

 

The good thing is that after turning off the sales tax function all transactions remain the same. You can turn it off and turn it back on. Then, uncheck the Make all existing customers taxable and Make all existing non-inventory and inventory parts taxable boxes. 

 

Turn it off temporarily:

Then, try to create a dummy invoice to a non-taxable customer (don't forget to delete it) to see if the sales tax line is removed.

Hi Lily - You have gotten closest to my question, but not quite. I have non-tax and taxable sales specific to each customer. When I set up one of my non-tax customers I did not check or assign the Non-Taxable cue (I must have done this for other customers) and each time I invoice this particular customer I have to use the drop down menu to the right of the amount to change it to Non-Taxable.

I want to know how to change my customer's profile so that every sale is Non-Taxable. They are 501c3 - Non Profit, not taxable (and yes, I have their Tax Exempt Form on file). Thank you!

Good day, Answer2019.

Helping you change the customer's profile is my priority. Let's get this set up.

 

To change the customer's profile into Nan-Taxable, you can set a default 0% for the tax code for your tax-exempt customer. You will first need to create a Non-Taxable item and assign it to your customer.

 

Here's how:

 

  1. Click Lists at the top menu bar then choose Item List.
  2. Press Ctrl+N to create a new item.
  3. Choose Sales Tax Item as the Type.
  4. Set the Tax Rate as 0%.
  5. Select Tax Agency and hit OK.

 

 

After that, you can assign the item to the customer's profile. See the steps below:

 

  1. Click Customers at the top menu bar and choose Customer Center.
  2. Double-click the customer's name to edit.
  3. Go to the Sales Tax Settings.
  4. Select the Non-Taxable for Tax Code.
  5. For Tax Item, choose Non-Taxable as well.
  6. Hit OK.

 

Even if you assign a taxable item for the tax-exempt customer, it won't calculate since the tax code sets for them is 0%.

Hello, 

I had the same issue but quickly figured out a way around this problem

- Quickbooks Desktop For Mac -

* preference 

* sales and invoices

* (enable) don’t print items that have zero amount

* refresh quick books and the sales tax item will be removed from your invoices 

 

If your charging sales tax and passing it on to the end consumer

 

* in charts of account create an expense named sales tax

* then in enter bills under the expense tab enter the new sales tax account along with the paid sales tax amount

* in invoice click on the time/cost and under the expense tab you’ll see your sales tax

(If your items with the same service name are being put in more then one line, you might want to go to the time/cost tab on invoices, click on time, then click on options and enable combine activities)
