This might make the account inactive but all the transactions still show up in reports! I want all the transactions to disappear, as I created a new account with new transactions that are now getting duplicated in my reports because my "deleted" account is technically still there! Help please!
Hi there, OnFire.
We'll need to delete each transaction so they won't be included in all reports. Let's first activate the account. Here's how:
Once you've deleted all transactions, go ahead and inactivate the account again and run your financial reports.
Let us know if you have any questions.
I don't see an option to allow INACTIVE or to delete. How do fix that?
Let's first make sure that you have an access, Atari Silverlake.
There is a certain type of user that has no access with adding, editing, and deleting accounts. You can read this article for reference: User types in QuickBooks Online. You can reach out to your company admin to change your level of access.
Also, make sure that the account you want to delete is not a default account. There are accounts created by QuickBooks that we're unable to delete or make inactive. Check this article for details: Manage default and special accounts in your chart of accounts.
We can do some troubleshooting if you have access but still unable to make it inactive. Let's start by an incognito window and check if everything works fine. You can also clear the browser's cache. Most of the errors in QuickBooks Online is just a result of too much cache. If this behavior continues, I suggest using another and supported browser.
You can also create a subaccounts in your chart of accounts in QuickBooks Online. This helps to track your transactions easily.

I added a new credit card to link to our Quickbooks account (it was a new number of an existing credit card with Bank of America). I specified the dates that I wanted the new data to download into Quickbooks. But, it looks like I requested transaction from the last year instead of the last month. So, in addition to 233 unwanted transactions, there is also a corresponding balance in Opening Balance Equity. Can I delete the entire account without individually deleting each transaction? Also, I want the Equity balance to go away too.
Can you help?
Thanks for joining the thread, @dlee.
I'm happy to help you batch delete those unwanted transactions. It's super easy and you'll be doing it like a pro in no time. Check it out:
That's it! Excluding the transactions will move them to the Excluded tab on the Banking screen and won't add them to your register.

I am new to Quickbooks and trying to delete credit cards with non-zero balances. However, I'm warned about QB adjusting reconciliation and i don't know what that means. Help appreciated.
Maria
Hi MAB11. What this warning means is that by making the account inactive, those transactions will no longer appear when you attempt to reconcile your books.
Reconciliation is the process of checking your bank statements vs. the bookkeeping that's been done inside of QuickBooks. Here's a guide on reconciliation to help you understand better. Please let me know if you need anything else.

Thank you so much for your help. These cards were joint cards with my husband and I no longer want them in my company QB. Perhaps you can guide me in how to make them inactive?
Hi MAB11. Thanks for responding. I appreciate the info it makes the situation a lot more clear. Here's our guide on deleting an account . It will guide you through whatever steps may need to be taken depending on whether these are set up as sub-accounts or not and based on a few other factors.

I actually do need help. Sorry. I'm totally new to QB and struggling.
I have added my new Chase credit card to QB. Can i add my Chase bank account to QB THROUGH QB or do i need to do it through the bank? Or is it already in QB with my credit card?
I want to make credit cards inactive, but I don't know what "adjusting transaction means." Will it affect other cards in QB? I'm so confused!
Hi MAB11. I suggest you request a callback from a QuickBooks agent. They will be able to perform a screen share with you to see exactly what needs to be done to remove the credit card. To request a callback just do this from within QuickBooks Online:
You will receive a confirmation and a QuickBooks agent will call you as soon as available. Please let me know if there's anything else I can do for you. Have a great day.

This will take hours. There is no way to select them all and perform a batch delete. Poor programming and the developers should be aware of this.
Hello there, OnFire2000.
Are you trying to delete the transactions on your register? If so, we have an option to exclude them by batch. This is applicable to those downloaded transactions from your bank. You can follow these steps:
If these transactions are manually created, you'll have to delete them individually. I have an article here if you need a reference on how to assign, categorize, edit, and add your downloaded banking transactions.
Post again here if you need anything else. Have a great day!
Hi! So I really messed up and don’t know what to do next. I am new to quickbooks. I accidentally connected a credit card thinking it was asking me to connect my business banking account so now when I write an expense it is being filled under this “credit card.” I made the “credit card” account inactive but now I have the credit card credit under my expenses. How do I fix this and get rid of the transactions along with the credit card... because all the transactions are from my regular business account.
Thanks for coming by @Argenb.
I have some information about credit card credit. You can create a journal entry to transfer credit to the correct account. Then, create a wash or clearing account to move the credit to that account. Let me walk you through how.
To create a wash or clearing account:
After creating the clearing account, enter a journal entry to move the credit.

Hi! Thanks for the help so far. I have another question, now the $ in my quickbooks has added that amount although it was there from the expenses already. Is this normal or how do I fix this?
Hello there, Argenb.
You can move the amounts posted as expenses in your credit card account to the correct bank account. Aside from creating a journal entry, you'll want to edit each expense transaction that was posted on the credit card account to the correct one.
Let me show you how:
You'd see that the amounts in your credit card decreased and the bank accounts you transferred the amounts to increased. After editing the transactions, you can inactivate the credit card account again.

There is no delete.
Allow me to provide some clarifications about missing delete options, @tim-shinkle.
Currently, deleting a bank account totally in QuickBooks Online isn't an option for us. QuickBooks ensures that you can still restore the bank information in case you need it for future transactions. This is why it will only give you the option to inactivate it.
In addition to that, if you make an account with a balance inactive, QuickBooks creates a journal entry. This moves the remaining balance to another account. Your existing transactions don't disappear and stay on your financial reports. However, if you decide to use the account again, QuickBooks won't move the balance back or change the journal entry.
Moreover, let me share these links to help manage your accounts in QuickBooks Online:
