Quickbooks Desktop Freezing Up

I have having severe issues with my QB freezing up when I am using it.  It seems like I have the same issue running reports or entering transactions.  My file size is around 80MB, so I don't think that's the problem.  Any ideas from anyone?  The only thing I can see that may be an issue is that I store my company file on a jump drive so that I can access it on multiple computers.

Any help is appreciated!  I'm about to lose my mind!

Have you already checked the article that @MorganB provided? If so and you are still having the same issue I can provide another troubleshooting step that may help fix this issue.

We'll want to run the QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool (QBInstall Tool). This will help us identify any component issues related to your QuickBooks Desktop. Here's how:

1. Download the QuickBooks Install DiagnosticTool.

2. When prompted, save the file to the local Desktop.

3. Close any open programs and run the QBInstall Tool.
Note: It may take up to 20mins to complete, depending on your internet speed and computer's performance.

4. Restart the computer after running the tool to ensure the components are properly updated.

Please refer to this article for more information: QuickBooks Desktop won't open, has stopped working, or not responding.

If the problem continues, you'll need to try other solutions provided in the article above.

Please let me know how it goes by leaving a comment down below or click the Reply button. I'll be around if you need further assistance.

Hey there acagwinsc,

Welcome to the Community. I'm happy to offer my assistance to keep your account from freezing up.

I first recommend clearing the cache within Internet Explorer, which connects to your Desktop account. The cache can become bogged down with excess data, therefore slowing down the system. Steps on the clearing process can be found here: https://community.intuit.com/articles/1145697-how-do-i-clear-the-temporary-internet-files-and-cache.

Additionally, you may want to consider rebuilding and verifying your data in case there's any damage. More information on doing so can be found in this article: https://community.intuit.com/articles/1501314-resolve-data-damage-on-your-company-file.

This will get you back up and running. Keep up the great work and please let me know if you have any other questions.

Re: Quickbooks Desktop Freezing Up

I am having more and more freeze ups with QuickBooks Desktop Accountant 2018.  Can't pin it down to one thing, but it is very frustrating and time consuming to use task manager which sometimes will resolve the frozen window so I can restart QB and other times having to restart the pc.

We too are having difficulty. Desktop version 2018 - we just updated, one computer works the other is freezing just after the file is logged into.

Re: Quickbooks Desktop Freezing Up

Hey there, @taggerwear

Have you had a chance to try the steps provided by @MorganB, and @FritzF? If you have and you're still having issues, allow me to provide another alternative. QuickBooks has the ability to compress your company file into a portable copy. This file format is easier to transfer via email or through an external storage device. This also helps to fix latency issues within the file. To do this, please follow the steps below:

Create a portable company file

  • From File in the upper left-hand corner, click Create Copy.
  • Choose Portable company file then Next.
  • Select the location where you want to save the portable copy.
  • Click Save and OK.

Restore portable company file

  • From File in the upper left-hand corner, click Open or Restore Company.
  • Choose Restore a portable file then Next.
  • Select the portable copy (.qbm) then Open.
  • Read through the Where do you want to restore the file? page then select Next.
  • Choose the location where you want to restore your portable file.
Note: You can change the name of the portable file to prevent it from overwriting your existing file.
  • Select Save.

Note: you may need to reattach any documents you had attached before creating a portable copy. You can find more information on that here.

Just in case you need it, I'm attaching the article that goes over portable files here. If you're still experiencing performance issues with your company file, there may yet be something else going. Once you have a moment to try out these steps, comment back with your results. I'll be on standby here waiting for your response.

Re: Quickbooks Desktop Freezing Up

thank you I've tried these, as well as reordering the Lists and Names.

I've went in and deleted plist files and clean installed quickbooks. nothing is helping.

I've downloaded other accounts at the same bank and they've been fine.

I can't download to a certain checking banking account, which of course, has the most transactions. I've even split the date range quarterly as opposed to downloading say a full year.

I've created a new bank account just to try - that works in the Sample Company File, but not in my company file.

I get the spinning wheel in Mojave running QBks 2019 Desktop for Mac.

NOTE TO FOLKS USING THE "Trial" 30-Day Desktop for Mac: There is no "Check for Quickbooks Update" option in the menu, so don't go crazy looking for it like I did.

Re: Quickbooks Desktop Freezing Up

Thanks for getting back to us, @bcav.

I appreciate the steps you've done to get this working. Allow me to step in for a moment and help make sure that you can download your bank transactions in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) for Mac.

Since it's working on the sample file, your main company file might be damaged causing this unusual behavior. To isolate this, return let's run the QuickBooks built-in diagnostic and repair tools called rebuild and verify data utilities. These tools comb through, repair, and notify you of data damage within the file.

Here's how:

1. Go to File, then select Utilities and Rebuild Data.
2. Choose OK. Follow the prompts to save a backup.
3. Click OK when you see Rebuild has completed.
4. Now, go back to File, then Utilities and select Verify Data this time.
5. Should the Verify find an issue with your data, you will be prompted to Rebuild Now or View Errors.

For your reference, you can also check out these articles for further guidance:

Once done, try to download your bank transactions again to double-check.

That's it! Give this a try and please let me know how it goes in the comment section below. I'm always here should you have any follow-up questions and concerns. Take care and have a wonderful rest of the day.

Re: Quickbooks Desktop Freezing Up

@FritzF-

thank you for your assistance. I’ve rebuilt the file several times during this process - check data, then rebuild. In any of the cases it hasn’t given me an error - says the file is fine. Accept for one time earlier today I got a “warning”.

Im not at my desk at the moment, but will attach the screenshot of the warning I got.

I’ll  also review the links you provided and get back with more.

Thanks.

Re: Quickbooks Desktop Freezing Up

attached is the Warning File - but I'm not even sure I got this when I rebuilt.

I did however just try to verify and rebuild the data, and both task worked and came back with no errors.

Re: Quickbooks Desktop Freezing Up

My desktop version of QB shuts down or freezes multiple times a day.  I have run through all the trouble shooting (the fix tool, uninstalling and reinstalling, etc).  I have called support and had them remote into my computer and 'fix it' twice.  It works for about a day or 2 and then everytime I run a report or try change the filter- or even just scrolling down through the actual report will make QB freeze or close.  It happened 4x this morning while trying to open a check register report.  What else could be causing this?

Re: Quickbooks Desktop Freezing Up

Hello there, @clfp.

I appreciate the steps you've tried to fix this issue. Let me help share additional information about other resolutions for you to try.

We have an updated article for the solutions provided when QuickBooks stops working. I'd suggest going through the steps that you haven't tried yet to check if this will help fix the issue.

There are several possible causes that make the program froze. It could be that company name is too long, or you may have corruption on your hard drive. You can check this helpful article for more details: Solutions for when QuickBooks stops working.

However, if you've already tried all the steps provided in the article, I'd suggest contacting our Desktop Care support again to get this issue escalated. They have the necessary tools to further isolate this issue.

Here's how to get in touch with support:

  1. On your QuickBooks, press F1 and select Contact us.
  2. Type in your question and select Search.
  3. Click the Start a Message tab.

Keep me updated how it goes. I'll be here to help if you have other questions about this error.

QuickBooks Team

Re: Quickbooks Desktop Freezing Up

Thanks for joining the thread, @Cheryl17.

Let me walk you through the steps on how to fix this issue.

In the article shared by my colleague above, you have five solutions that can help you fix the issue. First, you can use the QuickBooks Refresher Tool to perform a mini repair on your QuickBooks Desktop.

Here's how:

  1. Close all QuickBooks Desktop version.
  2. Download the QuickBooks Refresher Tools.
  3. Save the file on your desktop.
  4. Run the QBRefresher Tool.
  5. Re-open QuickBooks Desktop.

If you still experience the issue, let's proceed to the next solution. Please follow the steps below:

  1. Download the QuickBooks Install DiagnosticTool.
  2. Save the file to the local Desktop.
  3. Close any programs and run the QBInstall Tool.
  4. Restart your computer after running the tool to ensure the components are properly updated.

If the issue persists, you can read this article for solution three to five: Solutions for when QuickBooks Stops Working.

That's it! Please let us know if you have any other questions with QuickBooks Desktop. We're always here to help.

Re: Quickbooks Desktop Freezing Up

I have wasted all day trying to reconcile 2019 statements.  Everything is fine until I try to print the reconciliation and then the page freezes and I cannot continue.  I have downloaded the diagnostic tool and installed it, rebooted and I still have the same problem.  I expect better than this from QuickBooks.  How about a chat session to fix this?

Re: Quickbooks Desktop Freezing Up

Hello @marby4,

I am here to help you print your reconciliation in QuickBooks Desktop.

This isn't a kind what we want you to experience. Since none of the steps above fixed the issue, you'll need to rename QBprint.qbp file manually.

Here's how:

1. Locate the QBprint.qbp.
2. Right-click QBprint.qbp file to your QuickBooks version and select Rename.
3. Add the word old to the file name. (example: QBprint.qbp.old)
4. Open QuickBooks Desktop.
5. From File menu, select Printer Setup.
6. Choose any transaction in the Form Name list and select OK.
7. Try to open and print any transaction.

I've added an article for your additional reference on renaming QBprint.qbp file manually: Rename the QBprint.qbp file.

If the problem still persists, I recommend contacting QuickBooks Customer Support. This way, they can access your account in a secure environment and help print your reconciliation.

Here's how you can reach them:

1. Open QuickBooks Desktop.

2. Click the Help tab at the top menu bar (you can still do this without opening a company file).

3. Click QuickBooks Desktop Help or press the F1 key.

4. Click Contact Us

Lastly, you can check to this article for more information about resolving issues cause QuickBooks Desktop: QuickBooks Desktop stop working or not responding.

Your patience is much appreciated today. Let me know if you have any questions. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you!
