card reader for desktop

I have quickbooks 2016 Pro - desktop - so far apparently there is no chip reader available for use with a desktop.  have been using just a credit card "swiper" - had the one from QB but it quit working - bought another from Amazon - it worked sometimes, other times wouldn't work - now has quit working all together - can I buy a "swiper" from merchant services that will work with my desktop.  Are we the only business still using a desktop?

We've been using QB Pro Desktop 2016 since, well...2016. We have a generic card swiper from Amazon and it's been working well for years. We had a previous one that finally died after a couple years of use.

I would like to find a chip reader - not sure if there is such a thing...?

That link lists how to manually enter a payment, it doesn't list equipment or card readers anywhere.

That link is regarding payment processing, not anything on the page about card reader equipment for desktop.

No you are not the only desktop user. We were told by QB that when the new card reader was available they would replace our old one free of charge with the new. So far nothing has been received.

Good luck with a card reader for Desktop.  I spoke to someone at QB and they said their portable card reader (with chip reader) would work on the desktop.  Then when I received them it would work so I contacted Tech Support and after explaining everything to a nice gentleman in India they finally switched me over to the US Tech Support and I was told it would not work.  So after speaking with (5) Quick Books Representatives to get a return order number I went ahead and purchased the MagTek card reader.  However it doesn't have a chip reader.  Now I'm dreading contacting Tech support AGAIN to get this one set up.

I don't need to learn how to use the card reader I have been using one for years on Quick Books.  We have another work station and I need to know how to connect the new reader on a cloud base system.  How about you give me a direct Phone Number to the  correct U.S. team without going through India first.  They just ask redundant questions that don't pertain to the issue and once they are done reading off their que card screen I have to explain the issue to 3 more people, and with all the back-ground noise going on when I do speak to them I can't understand or hear their responses.

The customer service links are all for bluetooth connected devices, and the question here is about USB connected devices (which Intuit doesn't seem to actually offer but they won't admit it).  Magtek card swiper connected DIRECTLY with USB will work (you can't go through a USB hub, has to have one cord directly connected the swiper and the desktop)  I keep looking but haven't found a chip reader that connects with USB for desktop use, and the swiper doesn't work on an increasing number of newer card styles unfortunately.

Thanks for joining this thread, TaxCatSC.

Right now, QuickBooks Desktop only supports the Magtek card reader via USB and chip card reader through mobile. Also, these hardware peripherals are only recommended to be plugged directly to a computer without the use of a USB hub or extension.

For any issues you encounter for newer card styles, it would be best to contact our QuickBooks Payments Team. One of them will be able to check your account and provide updates about the card reader.

"Right now, QuickBooks Desktop only supports the Magtek card reader via USB and chip card reader through mobile"

In my experience this is true for Quickbooks Online as well. (bit of confusing with the names, since using Quickbooks Online on a desktop computer to take credit card payments).

Thank you for the reply.

I'm now trying to figure out a wifi only tablet to link to quickbooks chip/card reader.  Does Quickbooks Go Payment app work on Amazon Fire tablets?  They run limited/modified versions of Android. so its not entirely clear.

Thanks!

In the process of trying to accept modern credit card payments on a desktop computer.  Is additional POS software purchase required to use the EMV  Ready PIN Pad

https://quickbooks.intuit.com/point-of-sale/hardware/

or is there similar hardware that can be used directly with https://merchantcenter.intuit.com/

?

Any way to accept chip cards/contactless payment that does not require a phone/tablet but can be USB plugged into a desktop computer?

Thanks for getting back to us, @TaxCatSC

If you're using our GoPayment app to collect payments, you'll need to purchase the mobile QuickBooks Payments EMV Card Reader.

As mentioned by my peer @AlcaeusF on his post, QuickBooks only supports Magtek card reader via USB through mobile and it can also be plugged directly to a computer without using a USB hub or extension.

For more information, you can also read through this article: EMV Standard and Smart Chip Cards. It includes links to different topics that help you learn about EMV connection.

We purchased a GoPayments reader some time ago (1+ years) and have been using it successfully with our QB 2018 desktop... until last week. It has suddenly stopped working. The computer still connects to it and recognizes the device as "BBPOS," the computer beeps and the green light is on when I connect it, but when I click (in QB) to take the payment, I get an error message that says I don't have an EMV device connected. I have tried unplugging it and plugging it back in, alternate USB ports on my computer, using the reset button in the little paperclip hole, different desktop computer... everything I could think of. We even had a spare in the office in the event this unit broke, and I have the same issues with it. Anybody know what's going on? Is this version suddenly no longer compatible with QB desktop? (I can still connect to it via the mobile app on my phone.)

We haven't received any reports regarding the card reader unable to connect to your device, 98010.

Before we do any troubleshooting steps, I'd recommend doing the following:

These will keep the applications and devices compatible to each other.

After that, pair the card reader with your GoPayment app again:

  1. Go to the Menu in upper-left and click Settings.
  2. Select Card Reader and click Type.
  3. Change to "Bluetooth reader". You can click the back-arrow.
  4. Ensure Bluetooth is turned on in the phone and QB21 device is on.
  5. Select "Add a new reader". This should allow the phone to detect the reader.
  6. Select the Chip and Swipe reader.
  7. The reader is now visible under My Card Readers section.

You can go back to New Payment to take a payment.

Give this a shot and let me know how this goes.

As the title suggests, I am using the card reader with our desktop QuickBooks file. It had been working just fine up until a week or so ago. I've been fiddling around with it trying to troubleshoot it on my own, with no success. My computer recognizes it as "BBPOS" as it always has, the PC bleeps when I power reset the device or when I plug it back in. Doesn't matter which USB port I use and I even tried switching the USB cable to a different one. We have a second device on hand (because we ordered a spare), and I get the identical problem with it.

While I am messing around with this, I have to hand-key all of our credit card payments, and the additional fees are mounting. Please help with this.
