Thank you for reaching out to the Community, @drmowers.

Certainly, I can provide you with some helpful information on how to fix the error code 30159 that you are encountering when trying to update an existing payroll subscription in QuickBooks Desktop.

If you use QuickBooks, you might encounter a pop-up message that reads “Can’t Verify Payroll Subscription Error 30159”. This error generally occurs when QuickBooks fails to recognize your username. This can be due to various reasons such as an expired QuickBooks or payroll subscription.

To resolve this issue, you need to check if your payroll subscription is still active. You can also use the QuickBooks tool hub to diagnose the cause of this error. If your subscription has expired, you will need to renew it to fix this issue.

Possible reasons for the error:

  • Inactive payroll subscription
  • More than one active payroll agreement with an inactive Direct Deposit agreement
  • Damaged QuickBooks Desktop file: paysub.ini
  • Data damage
  • Product not updated
  • Incorrect Service Key
  • Incorrect Employer Identification Number (EIN) in the company file
  • Incorrect PSID in the company file
  • The version of QuickBooks Desktop you are using does not support your version of Windows
  • The status of the payroll subscription in the QuickBooks Desktop Service Keys screen appears as "Invalid number or EIN."

Verify your Desktop Payroll subscription

  1. Ensure that you have the latest QuickBooks Desktop release and download the newest tax table release.
  2. Open QuickBooks Desktop Payroll Account Maintenance. Then close the page.
  3. Reboot your computer.
  4. Download the payroll update, again.
  5. Reset QuickBooks Desktop Update.

Note: If you are using Direct Deposit for the company file that is having this issue, please contact us. And do not follow the instructions below.

If the steps above don't work, you could try the following. However, if you are running a direct deposit — do not try to follow these steps and contact us.

  1. Close QuickBooks Desktop and Rename paysub.ini. (Note: Repeat for all paysub.ini files found. The system does not permit the same name twice. You can add a number or extra letter for every paysub file found.)
  2. Open QuickBooks Desktop Payroll Account Maintenance. And check if the payroll service shows Active, then close the page.
  3. It validates your payroll service online and should resolve the error. Otherwise, perform a clean install of QuickBooks in Selective Startup.

Additionally, here are some articles that you can read to help fix errors in the format 00000 XXXXX. These prevent the payroll setup wizard in QuickBooks Desktop Payroll from opening: Fix Error Code 0000 XXXX In Payroll Setup.

If you have any questions or issues with updating your payroll subscription in QuickBooks Desktop, please reach out to us in the Community. Stay safe!

Consider having a 3rd party payroll app to integrate with your QB Desktop.

I am trying to add to an existing payroll subscription and get the error code 30159. Please help me fix this.

I have a current client that I am updating from QB 2023 desktop to QB 2024 desktop.  We have a current subscription and this client is active in this subscription.  I have no problems working in this client in QB23, however, when I updated it to QB24, I get Error 30159 and PS036, cannot verify payroll subscription.  I see that in QB24, it thinks this is an invalid FEIN however, in QB23 it is a valid FEIN.

I have no trouble doing this client's payroll in the QB 2023 program.  It shows an active subscription, and an active EIN.

We have many other clients we do payroll for under our subscription, and this is the only one we are having a problem with.  We have been able to update everyone else to QB 24 with no problems.

Please describe, in detail, how I will be able to update this one client to the 2024 program without having to call and spend hours on the phone going around and around-- it's January, no one has time for that.

I am trying to add to an existing payroll subscription and get the error code 30159. Please help me fix this.

Let me assist you in resolving errors 30159 and PS036 to ensure your client's payroll runs smoothly in QuickBooks Desktop 2024, KTFPC.

Here are the possible reasons why you're getting error 30159 in QuickBooks Desktop:

  • Your payroll subscription may be inactive.
  • There are multiple active payroll agreements, but at least one of them has an inactive Direct Deposit agreement.
  • The QuickBooks Desktop file, paysub.ini, may be damaged.
  • The Employer Identification Number (EIN) in your company file may be incorrect.
  • Your product may not be updated to the latest version.
  • There may be an incorrect Payroll Service Identifier (PSID) or Service Key in your company file.
  • The version of QuickBooks Desktop you are using may not be compatible with your current Windows version.
  • The status of your payroll subscription in the QuickBooks Desktop Service Keys screen may appear as "Invalid number or EIN."

Next, you'll need to verify your Desktop Payroll subscription.

  1. Ensure that you have the latest QuickBooks Desktop release and download the newest tax table release.
  2. Open QuickBooks Desktop Payroll Account Maintenance. Then close the page.
  3. Reboot your computer.
  4. Download the payroll update, again and reset QuickBooks Desktop Update.

Moreover, here are the possible reasons why you're getting error PS036:

  • Incorrect internet connection settings.
  • A firewall setting that blocks payroll updates in QuickBooks Desktop.
  • Damaged file in the CPS folder

Here's how to fix this:

  1. Check your payroll service subscription.
  2. Register and update your QuickBooks Desktop.
  3. Run Quick Fix my Program from QuickBooks Tool Hub.

Moreover, please visit this article for detailed information and steps in resolving error PS036: Fix PSXXX errors when downloading payroll updates.

Furthermore, I've added this article for your future reference in fixing error UEXP when downloading payroll updates and activating retail payroll in QuickBooks Desktop: Fix error UEXP when downloading payroll updates.

I am trying to add to an existing payroll subscription and get the error code 30159. Please help me fix this.

So why am I only having a problem with this one client in QuickBooks 2024, and not in any other client, and only in Quickbooks 2024?  I have no problems with this client (or any other) in QuickBooks 2023.

Our payroll subscription is active.  All clients using direct deposit are active.  We have renamed the paysub.ini file.  The EIN is correct (it hasn't changed in 20 years).  The product is updated to the latest version, we do automatic updates and forced updates.  Our PSID and Service key are correct.  Our version of Quickbooks desktop is perfectly compatible with our version of Windows.  Our firewall settings do not block payroll updates-- we have done payroll updates in other clients successfully.  We have no problem connecting to the internet (obviously, or I wouldn't be able to post here).

I'll try the "Open QuickBooks Desktop Payroll Account Maintenance. Then close the page. Reboot your computer. Download the payroll update, again and reset QuickBooks Desktop Update." as we haven't tried that one yet, but again-- I have no problems with any other client, just this one, so I don't know why this would work .

I'll also try the "Check your payroll service subscription. Register and update your QuickBooks Desktop. Run Quick Fix my Program from QuickBooks Tool Hub." to fix a "damaged file in the CPS folder" whatever that is.
